Unhappy Fuel economy?!

Hi

I've just posted this query on my 'Fed up' thread but thought I should also start this new thread as more people may read it.

I have felt that the usual economical fuel usage has been terrible lately. I clicked on the switch on the dash yesterday and it said 28.6 mpg! Surely it should be 45 or thereabouts?! Any tips please?

Thanks

well a diesel should be reading at least 32-34 mpg even taking into account the 20pc error.

Re: Fuel economy?!

Yup. Someone at Kwik Fit suggested I put in a can of some stuff when I fill up at the petrol station and apparently it's meant to clean everything out. Not sure if it's that simple though?

I dread having to spend any more money on the Multi (see my other thread 'Fed up' so a local mechanic is going to check it out on Tuesday hopefully.

- depends how you are reading the MPG, if its per journey it may well be :

- 28 on that run you did
- 16 on the school run
- 35 on a mixed run
- 45 on a long run

Hope this helps !

Re: Fuel economy?!

I spoke to someone in Kwik fit a few months back when I was in there and they recommended a can of fuel additive to increase mpg. I took their leaflet with me and did a bit of research on the net about it. The guy at kwik fit assured me it was for petrol AND diesel engines. After a few minutes on the net I was not convinced at all. The company that made the stuff they suggested also makes a specialised diesel fuel treatment and as far as I could tell the kwik fit stuff was for petrol only. Watch out.
I went for a Wynns diesel treatment for about 15 from Halfords. I think that it did make a difference to mpg. It certainly helped clear things out, and after a few days I was aware of the whistle from the turbo when accelerating like it was running much more freely.
Advice from kwik fit, be careful. Talk to a qualified mechanic if unsure.

Re: Fuel economy?!

Kwik-Fit can be quite good at fitting tyres and fixing exhausts. Anything else....

Re: Fuel economy?!

might be worth getting a reputable brand fuel cleaner and adding it to your fuel tank when its got about a quarter of a tank.

then give it a good hard thrashing (as long as youve had a fairly recent cambelt!) to clear out all the carbon/soot deposits that are probably choking up your engine.

reset your mpg readouts when you add your fuel cleaner.

if youve still got low readouts you need to be looking at things like servicing (air and fuel filters, tyre pressures, binding brakes), fuel leaks, egr operation, air flow meter operation etc etc.
