2001 1.6LX Multi Petrol. Wife's car. Has had new cambelt (complete kit) and new battery in past week. Cambelt needed doing but car just died on her last night, garage has diagnosed battery dead (fair enough assumption as it is 9yrs old!)...however before all of this was done, the car was cutting out at junctions - and still is. It's running fine now, no noise or rattles from the engine but it just cuts out every now & then.

I've read loads on here about crank sensors but it all appears to be related to diesel multis...does the petrol one suffer from this issue and if so, how easy is it to fit for a relatively inexperienced mechanic? (me!)

Thanks for your help folks!!!! :worship:

when it cuts out, does it start straight away, i had a problem on my multi once, it used to cut out at juctions or when going round roundabouts, it turned out to be a blocked fuel tank breather, the next time it cuts out, if it is safe to do so jump out and pull the fuel cap off, if you hear a rush of air then it is the same problem i had, an easy fix and free

hi hale multi. Have you sorted the multi? I have some experience of disel and petrols and the crank sensor can/will fail on both, the main reason is wear and tear. As your model's 9yrs old,it could fall into that category. Does it cut out after the car reaches a warm temp, then on resting for a short while start up and drive.maybe cutting out after a bit more driving if so it sounds like the crank sensor.
The part can be sourced for about £30 and then fitted b a mechanic. If you've got a mechanic u can trust they could maybe do it for £20-40???
In terms of fitting it the sensor it can be difficult.i'd recommend getting someone else to do it. To an experienced person this job should take no more than an hour. You have to get underneath the car,the best way is to get it on a ramp, then you have to take off the undertray so you have to have the tools etc etc,i'm not trying to put you off doing it but you'd probably need 2 yrs or so of motor mechanics in my opinion. I've done changed 4 sensors before and it is a common symptom above 50 00 miles. As it can be a cheap job it's worth doing anyway. Post back how u got on.
