Thanks so much for your help guys and thanks for the diagrams. (y) These make no sense to me, but will get my partner to check them and see if they make sense to him. It would be a shame to scrap the car as it's not got a mark on it. Save for the technical problems it really would be a fantastic family car! Will try to find some time in the day tomorrow to take another look. My mechanic did promise faithfully to bring his code reader by end of the week, but he hasn't yet! Hopefully clearing and starting again might shed some new light... but I won't hold my breath!! Will keep you posted..
 
Regarding your comments about a jump lead. We did the same with a Ducato (put the jump lead from the battery to the engine) and the battery still drained.

The solution was to replace the engine to chassis lead. We found considerable corrosion between the original lead securing nut and the point on the chassis it was connected to. By replacing the lead and securing it to a different part of the chassis the draining problem was cured.

It did mean getting underneath with a spanner and physically checking the connections and condition of the earth points.
