Right then,
Having just picked the car up from Gonnella Brothers i was very suprised to find out that we were driving around with a broken O/S spring.
Pasquale was good enough to show me and as far as i'm concearned it was in reasonable condition without any rust whatsoever. As a technical person the only conclusion must be that when the design team in turin sat down and specified the various components required, i just don't think they had any idea, or at least the specs for these springs have been masively under estimated. Let's face it,The car is just far too heavy and with the advent of speed bumps and pot holes etc i think even if you fitted a set of ohlins they would struggle.
Along with all the other usual components relating to unhealthy bottom noises etc, i am very pleased with Pasquale and his team and i'm definatley going there again next year.
Let's be honest, if you go to a Garage and it's full of Italian cars then the likelyhood is that they know what their doing.(y)

you should really have had the front springs replaced by fiat, theres a recall on them.

the springs arent out of spec as such, what happened was that road salt, grit and water was collecting on the rubber coating around the springs, and just sitting there and rotting the springs out.

theres modified springs available as part of the recall campaign, they should be fitted free of charge and your tracking checked and adjusted afterwards as part of the repair.

best thing to do is ring up your nearest main dealer, ask them to do a SIGI on your vehicle and whether or not there are any outstanding recalls on it.

if its a jtd you might find its due an ecu reprogramme too.

The FIAT replacement springs aren't very modified - they still break in exactly the same way. In my case in almost exactly four years after the originals were replaced at the recall. So I'm on my third set of front springs.

I've never had that with any other vehicle in the past. But it's quite common with a lot of vehicles nowadays, it seems. And they don't rust away - they SNAP!

hmm maybe you live in an area that has alot of potholes/speed bumps or something.

i mustve done around 60 to 70 of these recalls when they first came out, and didnt have any come back snapped again.

every one that had broken you could see it was due to weakened coils caused by corrosion.

Yes, me too. On my 2003 JTD I am on my third set of front springs at only 50,000 miles. I have never known springs to break like they do now. I have had some rust buckets of cars in the past and never had to replace springs before on any of them. I once had a Vauxhall Cavalier mk2 (5 years old when I bought it) and I did about 95,000 miles in that car over an eight year period and never had to replace springs.

No more than most areas, these days!

Not on my broken springs - surface rust certainly, but the break itself has always been clean.

I should add that my Multi is (reasonably) sensibly driven and maintained. Potholes and speed cushions are treated with a degree of respect. I don't like having to buy springs! Even so-called 'modified' ones...

Im running a broken spring now, maybe you have never had any back as the dealers wont entertain you if you have allready had the re call , on another point what is the re program on the jtd's?
Oh and mine was a clean break with no surface rust at all.
Springs just aint up to the job.

maybe so then. you learn something new everyday i guess.

update was a software re-flash for a main relay error.

Exactly the same as mine, a clean break.

I've had a bit of a result after writing to Fiat(UK) and explaining what happened to my springs. At first they tried to fob me off and they even denied any knowledge of this particular recall.
After the usual corporate nonsense they finally came good and offered me a sizeable service voucher towards the next time i have to have something fixed, which we all know won't be very long, Now's a good time to get the clutch replaced i suppose.
