Hi !
My Multi, 1.6 16v 1999, has stated to make a "cracking" sound just when the car is started in first gear.
I have just done a majour overhaul and changed the Clutch, all droplinks, ARB bushes and both front wishbones. It is not likely that any of these parts are generating the sound.

It sounds like the "cracking" noise is comming from the right hand shock absorber mounting, and it's only heard when the front of the car is rising when starting in first gear. The sound is not very loud, but could it be something that is about to break, e.g. the springs ?

You can take a look at the Suspension strut support bearing, see if they are cracked or damaged.

They have both failed on my car, resulting in cracking noise when driving over "holes" in the road. I grabbed the spring and shacked it, then I could see excess movement in the suspension mount.

I test drove a 2007 1.9 JTD (driven 44000 km) few days ago and could see noticeable wear in one of the top strut mounts, was quite surprised !

Parts are available from KYB, Sachs, QH, Lemförder, Boge and many more

Thanks !

The multi has covered 176500 km so it's very likely that the bearings have done their job by now. Suppose the shocks also need replacing as there is a lot of roll when cornering.

I have a set of bearing to the Fiat Marea in my garage. Any chance that they are the same ?
