Multipla jtd 2002 100k - starting problems & power loss - any ideas for damsel in d

1. Starting problems: these have persisted since Nov 09 but are worst first thing in the morning and in cold weather. It takes more than 30 secs turning-over to start, sometimes 60 secs + occasional squirt of 'easy start'. Or I have another trip to the garage if the battery dies first. Starting later same day is usually easier. My mechanic has ruled out glow-plugs, fuel pump (replaced), air leaks in fuel system (all checked and fuel filter housing replaced), EGR (cleaned), & cam sensor (or is it crank sensor?) (replaced). Diagnostic tests don't give any clues.
2. Power loss: this has occurred over last few weeks under hard acceleration with 'eng ctrl faulty' warning.
3. More issues: over the past week the eng mgmt syst seems to go haywire during starting with warnings for diesel humidity filter, EBD and ABS(!).
My mechanic is wondering whether the injectors need a refurb, but that will cost £70 just to check. My purse is not bottomless and my blonde hair is going grey with the stress - any other ideas and are these problems related?

before you start checking injectors etc, put a new battery in her, i know it sounds simple but the multipla are prone for going crazy if the battery is old the engine management goes nuts if the battery is low on power!! if not are you anywhere near derby

Thanks - I'll get the battery checked for starters although it sounds in pretty good shape.

Hi, We are having similar issue with regards to starting problems. Only occasionally, and always when the wife is driving. However she does drive it more than me, and I went out yesterday when it happened and she wasn't missing anything. When the AA turned up it started straight away with one squirt of easystart but is no doubt going to happen again within next week, as it seems to be occurring more frequently, and usually on colder mornings. Did you get to bottom of it? Regards,

It's such a relief when you can get an awkward engine to start up with a squirt of 'Easystart''. But beware - engines can become addicted to that stuff as prolonged use of it has a tendency to cause the piston rings to break.

If you get to that point, it'll only start at all using Easystart.
