I may be lucky - it could be earth fault. Raining again though.(n)

Just measured 0.15 v between battery and alternator body - which Youtube says is an issue.

Cables under battery can corrode internally - reading widemouthfrogs posts.
Alternator has usual cracks on it. Use jump lead from battery to engine block next.

Alternator was kciking out 14.0 V after it ran for a bit.
Cracked casing on it - as usual !
 
If the alternator has cracked ribs, it's best to replace it. The pulley is under tension from the aux belt. If you get a total failure of the alternator housing it'll let go of the pulley. The aux belt will then come adrift. I'll leave you to read the threads on here about what that does to the cambelt.

Not worth taking the risk, in my view.
 
Thankyou WMF - makes sense.

Mechanic did it for me today as things are v. busy workwise.
It was hardly turning and ribs failing meant we could not get anything for old unit.
