I feel your pain, I did mine a year ago, getting the old one off was easy enough, getting the new one back up, almost impossible . Enjoy!

Selling my beautiful black 17" alloys, any interest?

Great news! Mine really was too big, I had to order another one, what a pain that was.

This is literally the only way the new, shorter 6PK1835 belt will go on (5:35).

I would really like to know why these things crack. Mine has had this same crack for 8 years.

Easiest way I found to get it out was remove exhaust , rear mount and oil pipe then the job is easy.

I have a theory it's to do with that poxy ratchet pulley that saves all of 0.007 of a horsepower 15% of the time. When that fecker locks in and starts driving the alternator the sudden torque shock must be pretty spectacular under a lot of conditions...

Waste of bloody time and money - just to save a puff of emissions every hour, and when it fuggs up you're into all the fun and games of replacing the alternator just to replace it.

But here's the thing mine does not have an overrun pulley, mine is a good old fashioned solid one ?? It must be something else like vibration perhaps.

Sorry for bumping such an old thread but thanks to the OP for starting this thread, this was of great help to me yesterday when I changed my alternator on my 1.9 JTD with air con.

This was a painful job that took me a few hours as I simply could not work out where the alternator would ever get out! I ended up simply removing the drivers side wheel, wheel arch cover, under tray, front exhaust section and the bottom engine mount and jacked the engin up/forward approx 1.5-2" to create the extra space to remove the alternator.

Should I have known how much of a pain this job was I would have gotten a garage to do it but at least know how to do it for future reference, hopefully I will never have to do it again now!

just to add a quick note,,,you dont need to undo the wish bone or any engine mount,,its the oil dip stick tube thats in the way and that is only a 10 mm bolt..once you have moved that out the way the alternator comes out ok...
Hi Guys I was very nervous to start to replace the alternator on my wife's Multipla as I read so many thread about how difficult it is and how complicated to remove and put the new one back. Finally I found this above... I think the original alternator has a "skinny" section which fit through between the drive shaft and the lower frame with no issue. Luckily I bought a factory refurbished alternator so I had no problem with the job at all, I did it on on the way as scoobie described and I filmed the most crucial part. I hope that will help for someone. I can't add URL to the post but you could find on youtube "Replacing Fiat Multipla 1.9 jtd alternator"

this one..?? Arpad..

Yes that's the one thanks for post it.. Is it make sense? I did not recorded every step as it has been done by others earlier but this is the moment of truth... I think worth to choose the right replacement part (at least in this case) as it could save you lot on time and swear... I was lucky this time.

Did my alternator today, 4hrs on the drive on ramps, very simple and easy to do. Alternator is from eurocar parts rtx-alt part number 401650332. The old one slips out with a pry bar moving the engine mount behind drive shafts, same process for installation, no need to remove shafts or any other parts.

4 hours..that still sounds a faff..!!:bang:

got any pics / or a parts fische view - to indicate which mount ( and what you needed to do to it)
Cheers,
Charlie

That was me taking my time, coffee, custard creams, poop ;) if you lay under car and have exhaust to your left the mount is dead centre 2-3 inches behind shaft, sort of inline with dip stick, the alternator is off and up to right, you pull alternator out of the gap made from moving dip stick. Once the alternator drops into the gap it just needs a little nudge from pry bar to flex the mount

Accidentally went through flood water at the weekend and alternator has given up. It has not been charging well for a few weeks. 13.5 volts with everything off.

Put some charge in battery with jump leads and managed to limp home 10 miles or so. Even the Speedo stopped working at one point - volts were that low.

I am going to check all earth leads etc if it ever stops raining.

Anyone changed an alternator recently ? Is this thread the best info on doing it ?

There was also a discussion on best replacements some time back but I have not located it yet. I have aircon.
