I get 450 miles ish from 61 litres, that's 33.2 mpg.
Very disappointed.
About 50% town, 50% motorway.
Driven sensibly.

Initially the pipe connected to the eg r valve was not connected, great I thought, the answer to my poor fuel consumption.
So I made sure the eg r valve worked then connected it all back up.
Still get 33mpg.
Rubbish.
Can anyone help???

the first thing i would check is the condition of the fuel and air filter, they dont help if they are old dirty or worn also try some redex to clean your lines and injectors, im not an expert but i would try these first

If that's a diesel that you have and you're looking at the mpg on the dash computor, you must add 20% to this figure which would be about 38 mpg, the calibration seems to be based on usa gallons and not imp gallons.

Thanks for the replies.
I know about the computer, I don't have one.
Yes it's a diesel.
It's been fully serviced with new filters and oil.

Hi st1vo, I have had my 115 jtd multipla for just over 2 weeks and just filled up for the 1st time after emptying a full tank.

I put in 57.25 litres which covered 432.7 miles (mixed road types and a few traffic jams), which equates to 34.35 mpg. Like you, I was very disappointed as I regulary got 47mpg out of my petrol 1.5 beat up old civic.

I was detemermined to get more out of this tankful so have really tried to drive economically (with the civic it didn't matter how you drove it it always returned about the same mpg). I've been changing up at about 2000 revs, 2500 on dual carriage ways and using a very light right foot and after 100 miles, my computer already says 41mpg.

I thought I wasn't being wreckless the way I drove it before, but after really "trying" it does seem that the multipla is very sensitive to the throttle pedal in regards to the amount of fuel it delivers.

?

Yup - that's pretty bad. I've had my 115 diesel for about 2 months, and I've been driving it really sensibly (read boringly) in order to convince myself that the modest investment to replace my petrol car was worthwhile..

I got about 41mpg with the first tank - my driving is entirely commuting 22 miles each way, mostly motorway cruising at 70. I've seen some improvement since due to (I think) the increased temperatures, as the car was taking half the journey to warm up..

I think I'm on target for over 46mpg this tank, BUT - I can't stand driving like this (65mph cruise, never going over 2,000rpm..) it's just so dull..

So anyhow, I agree with the previous poster - you seem to have to drive a Multi very gently to get good mpg, but there might be something wrong with yours.. You don't have binding brakes do you?

Neil.

I agree, it's the way that the multipla is driven, I use my cruise control regularly, it's mainly for driving just below the speed limit to avoid fines and of course for the safety of other road users, for example I drove down to Leeds the other week and there's a long 50mph limit stretch of road that goes on for about 15 miles, I zeroed my trip reading for this stretch of road just to see what the average mpg would be and it was much better, but I wouldn't want to do the whole trip like that, is feels like a snails pace on a motorway.:slayer:

I have had 2 multiplas. My first one, a 105jtd from new, always gave me about 40mpg however it was driven (hard usually). My current one, a 2004 115jtd, gives between 38-46 depending on spped, passengers etc. On my weekly commute (210 miles mostly motorway/A1) i get 46 (computer says 38), going between 60-80 mph. Worst consumption i had was 29mpg when towing our caravan. So I would say there is something not quite right with yours

Thanks for all your replies.

I've now cleaned the maf sensor in thinners.
Still no better though.

So what to try next?
Maybe unplug the maf all together?

My last tank returned 33.9 mpg, **** poor.

So using the purest scientific method I have filled the tank and added wynns injector cleaner AND unplugged the maf sensor simultaneously so as to be unsure which solves the problem, if either!!

I'd be tempted to try a different garage / fuel too. You never know when the calibration of the pumps was done and I don't like supermarket fuel..

I dont have a Multipla but I do have a diesel Fiat 1.9 MJet which I find gives best fuel economy at a steady 60 MPH. Clearly NOT ideal for pure town or urban driving. The economy seems best when driven "on turbo" rather than labouring the engine at low revs.

After 2 tanks worth of driving with a feather instead of my right foot (and realising that can drive quite hapily at 30mph in 5th) I have been returning an average of 44mpg. A lot better than my first tank's 35ish!

Having unplugged the MAF I think I'm on track for over 40mpg.
I'll let you all know when I fill it up!
