hi i have a w reg 1.6 petrol multipla that has developed a horrid problem. as i was pulling out of our drive yesterday there was a very loud banging noise as i tried to pull off and the car really shuddered.
after jacking the car up i found the o/s drive shaft has a problem.with the car out of gear i turned the o/s wheel and it just kept locking up and when it did free of it shook the whole engine.
does anyone know if this is a terminal problem with the gearbox or if there is a bearing somewhere where the driveshaft enters the box that needs replacing. thank you.

Sure it has not popped off and is just about catching ?

Pretty sure it's not popped off everything feels tight on both sides with no movement. When the car is jacked up and the o/s wheel spun there is a horrible noise from the gearbox

is this only with the one wheel? sounds like the 'crownwheel/pinion'
