What year? There are two types - one fits on the front of the engine and is very easy to remove the other type is situated at the right rear of the inlet manifold and is a swine to remove.

the heat exchange is out it come from the nearside front end the car is a w reg
MK1 EGR cleaning
On your car the EGR sits on the exhaust manifold at the front of the engine. Remove it and soak it as long as possible in carb cleaner or some other solvent. Then give it a good scrub until all parts are shining and the butterfly valve moves easily. Check pipes for perishing/leaks and re-assemble.
