I have some experience of disel and petrols and the crank sensor can/will fail on both, the main reason is wear and tear. Does it cut out after the car reaches a warm temp, then on resting for a short while start up and drive.maybe cutting out after a bit more driving if so it sounds like the crank sensor.
The part can be sourced for about £30 and then fitted b a mechanic. If you've got a mechanic u can trust they could maybe do it for £20-40???
In terms of fitting it the sensor it can be difficult.i'd recommend getting someone else to do it. To an experienced person this job should take no more than an hour. You have to get underneath the car,the best way is to get it on a ramp, then you have to take off the undertray so you have to have the tools etc etc,i'm not trying to put you off doing it but you'd probably need 2 yrs or so of motor mechanics in my opinion. I've done changed 4 sensors before and it is a common symptom above 50 00 miles. As it can be a cheap job it's worth doing anyway. Post back how u got on.
