Ever since buying our Multipla (18 months ago) it has only averaged about 30mpg according to the trip computer and my calculations. When it is cold it sounds like a tank too. The Fiat dealers have checked the burn rates and put injector cleaner through but it still averages 30mpg (about 34 on a long run).

I was wondering what everyone else had been getting mpg wise from theirs?

Anash, have you tried resetting the trip computer - change the mode to say mpg then hold down the button for several seconds until it clears, the trip will then record the mpg on current consumption.

Also, it's well documented that the trip is at least 4mpg out and you will be getting higher mpg than it indicates. To confirm this, reset your trip when you next fill up (completely full) then work out the mpg then ext time you fill up.

Just found this forum - as a potential Fiat user - and saw your thread.
Having test driven two 1.9JTD's recently I found one was showing 30mpg and the other 34.4. Both owners thought it did 40+. They could be right, although it does bother me as a buyer. We have a Scenic (petrol) which averages 36, but thats mainly around town.

If the trip is not reset it will work out the mpg from the time it was last reset, this will make the mpg look worse as the previous owner could have been driving hard or doing alot of short town trips. The cars will have 30 - 36 mpg on the trip but will be getting more than this as the trip is quite notorious for being about 4mpg out!

We now have a 115 JTD - on our first 300 mile run it has returned 44mpg, but the computer says 35!

This seems OK, but a little low for a modern high art diesel! (Our old Scenic 1.6 petrol would do 40 mpg on the same journey).

I did the sums last night after a long trip with accurately measured mileage and fuel. The simple answer to the wayward mpg readings is that your are being told how many miles to the American gallon your are getting rather than the Imperial gallon. Try the calculations yourself and you'll see. Now, is there any way to get the trip computer to tell me miles per litre? I don't buy in gallons any more, like the rest of the UK, and I certainly don't take my Multipla Stateside very often. Think I might start a new thread with this one... :bang:

You can change to the european litre/100 kilometres by fiddling with the set up on the computer, but it will affect the radio as well because it will only receive tinny europop afterwards.

We just measured the half term mileage (lots of taxi trips) and it is around 39 mpg, which we think is pretty good.

The US gallon explanation is v. clever. One assumes it can count imperial miles OK... :

And what's wrong with europop? ;) At home I've installed digital satellite TV just so I can keep up with Italian pop music - there is even one radio station called Radio Italia SMI (solo music italiano)! (y)

That'd be the one with Berlusconi's missus getting her kit off, would it?

Forget the europloppers. Got my JTD 115 three weeks ago and after carefullishly running it in I'm now getting (according to trip meter) about 6.8L per 100 km (this is Spain, 41MPG to you) but I checked it myself on a long run - averaging 83km/hr - and found that the trip meter reads at least 10% high.
Nice design in general, but I'll be rebuilding the driver's seat (like I had to with the Espace I traded in), there's too much lumbar support even with the little wheel down to nowt, though having a BX as a second car makes me biased.
Why couldn't they have made the front passenger seat fold forwards like the others? This would have made it much easier to get dining room tables in etc.
I was disappointed to find that the FIAT roof bars can only go in one fixed position. Any one found a way of fitting sliding rails?
Why do they compare these with Zafiras and Scenics?
Love to all.

You also have the bonus of a car that actually accelerates now, rather than makes progress on a glacial movement-scale (y)

Thanks Guys!

Sorry I haven't been back for so long...I was expecting to get notifications when someone replied.

I'll get me pencil and paper out and do a proper calculation. I had realised that the mpg is a average for all the miles recorded on the trip. I have repeatedly reset the trip and recorded up to 50mpg (for a few miles) before the average drops.

Once, on a long trip I had the computer on "range" for most of the journey. It was quiet funny...I could go for about 40 miles (by driving carefully) without the range going down. On most occasions it went up, sometimes by 100 miles or so. It was only when I stopped for a breather, turning the engine off, that the range dropped by any considerable amount.....strange!

Anyway thanks again.

Sorry I have no answer yet but thought you would like to know I have a similar problem. My consumption is about 40 mpg but we know people who get 48 to 50 mpg.
The other interesting fact is the noise, as mine also sounds like a tractor but does not improve much when warm. Which is unbelievable for a modern HDI engine.
It has been back to the dealers many times now however they have never came up with any answer or constructive comments.
Some usless quotes being "we have changed your fuel filter" (with 6000 miles on it.), "we reset the trip computer" and "the diagnostics show its ok".
I have just wrote to Fiat UK and will not let it drop with the dealer so hopefully will get somewhere, however it has been going on for a year know.

Nice to hear someone else experiencing similar problem (glad I'm not alone, not nice to have the problem though)

Have recently spoken to a diesel engine expert (marine engines) he was saying that diesels are a law unto themselves...some are noisey...some have lower than expected fuel consumption...but all-in-all they still go on for years without any other problems. Very strange!

An American gallon is 3.7854 liters while an Imperial gallon is, according to my calculator, 4.7317 liters as it is supposedly 5 US quarts. I had heard that a UK gallon was 4.5 liters, so I'm not sure who is correct here. I set my Idea's computer to read kilometers per liter (I'm in Belgium) rather than liters per 100 kilometers or MPG. I didn't know if the gallons used on the trip computer were US or UK, so I decided not to use it. I left the display in French even though I could have changed it to English, Dutch, or several other languages. For all that, the radio is always tuned to 648, BBC World Service although I can usually get Radio Four as well.

I have a jtd 110 2001 model and for the last 18 months the brim to brim test is a regular 40-42 mpg of diesel. The trip computer has given readings as low as 34 and as high as 47...but generally is about 10 % low...
