This is the second time that my Multipla jtd 115 bhp has refused to go into fourth gear. The first time it went back to normal after a couple of days but no such luck this time- it's gone on for weeks. Obviously I can still drive it but it's really annoying not having 4th gear. Does anybody have any idea what it could be before, inevitably, it needs to go to a garage?
Cheers!

Id try by changing the oil in the box first see if there is anything (debris) blocking 4th and check the selector cables. Can you select 4th when the engine is off?

No it won't go with the engine off. Excuse my ignorance but how do I check the oil and if there's any debris?

There is a drain plug and a refil plug on the gearbox, id just dump the oil in it and fill with fresh but check to see if there is anything in the old oil.
If it was second gear then id suspect maybe a gearbox syncro but not really on 4th:confused:.

Any progress on this problem? I can't offer much help but plenty of sympathy - our JTD is doing exactly the same. Topping up the gearbox oil improved things slightly but we still have days when fourth gear is completely out of bounds. The problem can come and go three or four times on the 25 mile drive to work.

Some alfa boxes can have a problem selecting reverse due to a bit of debris in the box maybe 4th is the multis dodgy one?
I deffo try and flush out with clean oil before anything else though.

Dis anyone have success with this? (Changing gearbox oil). I have the same problem, can't go into fourth gear regardless of engine on or not. Started intermittent fault, now permanent. Garage checked linkages and said they're all clear so desperately trying to avoid the gearbox out and strip stage.

I have found that a complete drain, and flush if possible, then refilling with a good full syntethic gear oil is excellent for improving a stiff box.

What do you flush with? Normal engine flushing oil or something else? I'm going to try this weekend, have got the recommended gear oil but would have thought something very thin (and hopefully cheaper:D) than flushing oil would be best for rinse through. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks, Rob

In the past I used diesel oil. Drained off a third of the exisiting oil topped up with diesel and drove gently for a few miles.
Worked for me!

Have you considered liberal doses of wd40 in the gear linkage cables? Also, and this is a little off beat, wd40 around the clutch lever into the bell housing! It could be just a build up of cr*p somewhere before the gearbox. What do you have to lose? Tens mins and some wd!??!

OK Peeps,

drained and flushed the gearbox - easier said than done, which moron at Fiat decided to put a drain plug with allen key socket so close behind a flange that you can't get an allen key on it? (hint, if you have to do this the only way I managed was by grinding a short length off the allen key that I could insert then turn with a spanner). Also checked selector gaiters and both split so gave large dose of wd40, left a few hours, then loaded up with grease whilst my son changed between gears.

Outcome was gear lever now goes into 4th position :D but, when driving, appears to have gone into gear, but as you lift the clutch grates and jumps out again

My guess is that I've got it moving a lot further, but not quite enough. Anyway, I've now officially given up, and am taking it to a gearbox specialist tommorow. Hopefully he can fix it as a new box aint an option at present.

This is one of the Fiat Multipla's head scratching moments - if it was a fault, it should be always faulty  - but it ain't! :bang:
Mine would sometimes work ok and at other times not go into, or out of, 4th at all!
I SEMI cured mine with a drain out, top with diesel, run for a few miles to get warm and move any junk, drain out - leave it to drain for half an hour to remove all the diesel - top up with best quality synthetic gear oil and (hopefully) you will have untroubled changes - I did, well for about 5k anyway, then it appeared out of the blue, was a bitch for a change or two, then back to being a good girl again - weird! :bang:
