As the title might suggest, our boot has started to unlatch itself on its own! It doesn't fully come open, but the "Doors Open" alarm pops up and you can clearly hear the mechanism operate. It's an '02 Multi with 78k miles. Any ideas?

We had that happen on one trip, and I seem to have cured it by operating the boot switch by the handbrake. No idea what caused it in the first place though, so fingers crossed...

I had that happen to me on numerous occasions, the 1st time it dumped my dog out into the middle of a very busy road, then it dumped all my shopping in the road, and the last time it nearly took out a cyclist who was behind me! I now have it hooked down via a dog lead attatched to the boot strap and hook it onto the floor hoop (D ring thing).
I did take all the trim off and undone the bolts that hold th catch, cleaned it up and then slightly readjusted the catch.
It seems to not do it now but i always strap it down just in case.

Open the boot and loo where the catch is fixed to the boot floor. There are two bolts there. Loosen those slightly and the catch slides back and forward. Adjust to a place where the boot more positively shuts (likely to need to move 'outwards' slightly). Cured mine (after similar luggage-losing incidents) maybe 6 years ago now, and no trouble since

Tried that a number of times with the Grande Punto - made no difference!

No idea of the cause, but it's maybe a defect in the key fob which has a 'tailgate opening' button.

Ah - with the early Multis (like mine) the remote boot release was mechanical, so moving the striker plate cured teh problem. Later ones use an electric release, with a microswitch in the handle above the numberplate (and a button on the key fob). The microswitches are prone to problems, mainly caused by the plastic moving part of the handle not moving fully to the 'not pressed' position. A gentle road bump then operates the switch. Cure is described somewhere on this forum (new handle or dismantle and clean) -- do a search

I had this problem. It was water ingress into the lock mechanism, this cross fused the electric release so that whan I pressed the brake pedal (the power surge lighting the brake lights) made the boot release. I had the lock replaced and that was the end of that
