Hello,
I'm after some advice.
We are looking at purchasing a fiat multipla old style. We have seen 2 that we like, one is a diesel and the other is a petrol.
The spec of the petrol is as follows:
2001 Y Reg FIAT Multipla 100 16v SX petrol, 105,000 miles - £1295
And the spec of the diesel is:
2000 Fiat Multipla 1.9 turbo diesel 110 sx, 78,000 miles - £1995

The petrol seems more appealing due to the price, but is it worth paying the extra to get the diesel.

Do these prices seem reasonable for the amount of miles on the clock.

What can i expect to need changing with the multipla?

Thanks in advance.

Diesel is the best , i know a mate really regrets getting the petrol as it aint got a lot of guts in it.

problems seem mainly with cambelt tensioners seizing but you get that on all cars these days but gearboxes seem to like loosing oil from the input shaft seal then eating themselves also the dual mass flywheel can be a pain if your getting judder on the clutch.
Dont get me wrong they have there problems but they still remain a fab car .
The diesel seems overpriced you have mentioned and people dont seem to be able to shift the petrol versions.

So check full operation of clutch (judder taking off and prob engaging)
Cambelt change (if its just the belt and not the idler and tensioner then assume it needs doing)
Front end suspension knocks can be the anti roll bar which are £110 bushes not available on there own or roll bar drop links which are cheap.
I recently had to remove my gearbox to cure a sump oil leak so i did the seal on the box as well as the dmf cambelt pulleys and waterpump.

good luck finding one but if it were me id go for the diesel as they can be chipped to 150bhp as well.

we have had a petrol from new (over 8 1/2 years now) and don't regret buying it for a minute. Have never found it slow or under powered! Probably because I didn't buy it for performance as much as practicality, however the performance and handling are great for a car of this type.

The only thing I would say is you may prefer an ELX to the SX, you get a much better spec and at those ages probably won't pay any more for it!

Sorry booklady seemed to slate the petrol there  not my intention it was just what ive been told about them, and yes much higher spec for the money but i wouldnt really want to tow with one.

Having had both a petrol and (currently) a diesel Multipla, I would urge you to go for the diesel. It has much better performance, and much better fuel economy.
Mine is coming up for 100,000 miles, and drives like new. Be prepared for some outlay if the car hasn't had the common faults fixed, but a regularly serviced car with service history should be ok.
Good Luck !

Thanks all for the replies. The decision in some respects has been made for me, as the petrol one has been sold. I have seen other petrol ones out there but they are the same price as the diesel we have been looking to buy.

We've just got a problem that we can't sell our car, we are wanting to downsize from a vauxhall zafira to a multipla, however no one is interested in buying our zafira at the price it is worth.

The garage we are hoping to buy the multipla from are not in a position to buy our zafira, so we have got to sell it privately which is a nightmare.

Anyway thanks again, and lets hope the one we want stay up for sale.
