My 2001 Multipla, which I bought last month has a "brrrrrr" noise whilst driving. The noise disappears when the clutch is depressed or if I take my foot off of the gas pedal. It cannot be heard if I depress the clutch and rev the engine. We were aware of this noise when we purchased it, so had the clutch, flywheel, cam belt and water pump replaced.

The noise has returned, but seems to do it after driving a while.

Can anyone throw any light on the matter, please? I am trying to contact the garage that did the work, but I would like another opinion just in case they try and fob me off!!!

Thank you ;)

Me again!

Just come back from the garage and have been told that I need to have the gearbox reconditioned.... ~£1000 + VAT.

Does anyone think that this is reasonable? The car drives OK, but the garage man said that if I don't have this work done soon, I could cause more damage e.g. go into a skid if the gearbox ceases (OMG!).

I may be a mere female, but I certainly do not want to be diddled (in that way! :;).

Any thoughts out there, please?

Cheers

An alternative might be a replacement g'box from a scrappie but the condition cant be guaranteed. Its worth shopping around on recon gearboxes. There is no warranty to consider just plain cost, labour rates can vary wildly, particularly between dealer and independent.

(y) It's worth a try...Thankyou!

I don't know if the garage I have used would fit something I supplied, though.
I can ask.

From the description I have given, do you think it is a gearbox problem? Having had the clutch & flywheel replaced 6 weeks ago, I would like to make sure before 'splashing out' more cash...Ta ever so!!!!

Its always hard to be certain to be honest. Its worth looking at the obvious belts and pulleys to make sure non are frayed or loose repectively. Even check the alternator and water pump bearings are sound.
Assuming (and even that is risky) that the clutch components were replaced with good quality parts there may be a case for some sort of "money off" request from the people who did your last repair as a goodwill gesture. Especially if the work they did was on their recomendation and the original noise has returned, they may have missed something or done something wrong.

Hi from Bracknell...Thank you again... Ffoxy. The work was done at our request because the clutch failed. We had the following done - clutch, fly wheel, water pump, cam belt. (£1083 inc vat)
We would have to get an independent check to ascertain if the work had been done correctly ? The garage 'boss' took the Multi for a m'way run this morning to hear the problem. Your comments are appreciated. I will look up other recon g'box costs before doing any thing. :)

I'm assuming the multipla uses the same gearbox as other fiat models ....so it shouldn't very hard to get a low mileage one from a rear end shunt car from a breakers.

I dont think they do tbh , i tried that route rather than having the bearings replaced in mine but couldnt get a proper answer to my questions about it.
Gear ratios could be different in another car.

looks like the diesels share the gear box with several fiat models but as for the 1.6 a also havent found a definite answer yet..........

But after a quick scan of the skf cataloge it looks like the brava 97-01 1.6 16vlv shares the same seals as the multipla and the clutch components are the same so I'd love to compare a brava gear box to a multipla box ....I suspect the difference would be the linkage...

Plus realistically its very very very very very unlikely that fiat designed a new gearbox from scratch for the multipla

I agree, it is highly unlikely that Fiat designed a new 'box the Multipla, especially as you must consider the fact that it was never going to be a high volume vehicle in production terms.

However,I have checked through ePER, and found that the numbers given for multipla boxes do not cross reference to any other vehicles (i was bored) so the obvious conclusion is that there are some differences.

The differences are likely to be in linkages or mounting points, which would be immediately obvious, but there could be ratio differences especially in lower gears; based on the fact that the multi is between 200-250kg heavier (unladen) than a brava or marea.

It would be interesting to find a salvagers with multipla and other model gearboxes on the shelf for a like to like comparison.

hence my post , its prob just the gear ratio's.
