Hi
I know it is a bit daft to write about a problem like this but I am counting on someone out there who possibly experienced the exact same problem to save me time on the diagnostics.
Multipla 2000 1.9JTD with 101K miles. Started making a soft taping noise that is rev related (the higher the revs the higher the tapping frequency). It is too soft to be a tappet but I am not ruling it out completely. It is not the aux belt coming to bits and hitting something on its way. It is not the vaccum pump, I replaced it thinking it was the cause.
I guess the first elimination would be to run the engine without the aux belt to eliminate belt/guid/tensioner/pullys.
All responds to this post are very welcome!

Could it be the egr valve ? seem to remember my mates making a ticking noise.
Have you checked the timming belt ?
If its rev related it would have to be a belt or a pulley maybe?
Do you have aircon ?

Thanks,
I can't see how it could be the egr valve, can you elaborate?
My next move was to run it without the aux belt to eliminate all the pullys from the equation.
It could be the Cambelt, or a hydraulic tappet.
Anyway I do not have the time so garage has it now.
I shall be awaiting their diagnostics report tommorow.
I shall update then.

It's almost certainly the TVD ( torsional vibration diffuser ) or better known as the bottom or crankshaft pulley.
Had the same issue with my Scudo, changed it, and it was fine.

Thanks
It was the Aux belt tensioner. I replaced the whole lot though, Idler and belt as well as they all looked a bit tired.

This is interesting, I have recently had my cambelt changed by a garage (cambelt kit), and my car is now making a ticking/clattering noise, rev related. Do you think this could be as a result of them changing cambelt wrong?

Sorry for ignorance, but is there an auxiliary belt as well as cambelt? Are there any diagrams showing the whole thing, as i need something to show the garage?

Mine to was the large crank pulley wheel, noisey especially at low speed, I too replaced the tensioner and I think theres another small wheel, all at 100k miles. At speed on the motorway it goes away. The auxilary belt is the only one you can see, cam belt is behind the plastic cover. Recommend replacing all the wheels as you can get belt failure if you dont change all of them at the same time. The crank pulley is around the £70 mark and the others £25- 30 plus the belt £15-20. Takes less than an hour to fit but you need two people idealy

The garage have now agreed to change the auxbelt and cambelt again, plus all pulleys and wheels etc, so hopefully it will be sorted soon.

Will update when they have done it

OK, garage have fitted complete new cambelt kit (pulleys, tensioners etc) FOC, and noise is still there!!! :bang: And they don't know what else to do, so have got it back now :(

Does anyone know of anywhere in the Welwyn Garden City area I can get this looked at, to see if it is the TVD thing mentioned above? I was pinning my hopes on the cambelt, but it needs looking at by a FIAT specialist I guess

Any help welcome

Re: Noise from engine bay - valves/cambelt problem?

OK, now taken it to another garage, who have said it is definitely not the crankshaft pulley, but could be a valve timing problem - implies the original garage got the timing wrong when they changed the cambelt?

They are looking at it Monday, but have advised me not to use car more than necessary until then

They also said oil level was low, and I have noticed smoke under acceleration/when cold lately - what could this be caused by, as oil was changed only a thousand miles ago?
