My 2000 1.6 ELX has been great, but I've got a weird problem that started a few hundred miles ago when the car refused to start after a 150-mile trip (wife was alone in the middle of Bodmin moor with our 2 toddlers !!)

She called me and from her description of the problem it sounded like fuel starvation. On a hunch I asked to remove and replace the fuel cap .. hey presto, car is off again. Now we regularly have to go through this procedure, sometimes after a couple of hundred miles, sometimes after 10. Each time we're greeted by a lot of released (or maybe inbound) air and gurgling from the tank.

Fiat dealer wants over £60 to even discuss it ("Needs diagnostics sir"), but I suspect either a faulty filler cap keeping the tank at too high a pressure, or a trapped vent pipe trapping a vacuum in the tank.

Does anyone have experience of a problem like this ?

if taking the fuel cap of solves the problem them most likely you have a vacuum in your tank.you must have blocked breather in the tank preventing air from replacing the fuel the car uses.these breather pipes are usually on the top of the tank and most of the time are complete bastards to get to,often requireing the tank to come out(dont know your car im afraid) but its worth getting underneath and having a look to see if anything is obviously snagged or jammed

Try...the multi forum off the main website...

Someone might be able to help!
However...my Multi sounds pressured whenever i take the cap off.
Try running with the cap undone and see if it gets better or worse.
I would put some form of bung in with a hole to relaease pressure so as not to cause a few possible problems!
