I have a 3 year old Multipla, which has developed an unusual fault....essentially for no apparent reason the car decides to disconnect the engine from the gearbox and shut down. It will refuse to re-start but after 10-mins to 1/2 an hour it re-starts and depending on time and distance will happen again...

anyone got any ideas as to what the problem might be....

Its been in the dealers all day today and they couldnt replicate the problem or find anything significantly wrong with the car.

to add to this I've done some additional investigation and the engine only conks out when it is at full operating temperature...it looks like there is something overheating to cause the engine to automatically shut down when it gets to a certain temperature....

What engine as it tends to make quite a difference to a diagnostic:)

Alfa Romeo 156 2.4 JTD (210BHP)
Fiat Punto JTD (130BHP)
Fiat Barchetta

The Engine is the 1910cc(105BHp) Diesel ...but good news to all that I can relate....turns out the problem was a faulty TDC Sensor which only becomes apparent when the engine is hot running for a short period of time....(on the fourth bar in the engine temp display)
