Hi All,

Apologies for what I've started over the sticker (or added too), the M.I.A. bit was just a suggestion by myself to add the M.I.A. part which would probably generate more hits on Google due to the abbreviation. It was never intended or implied that it was the 'final' name etc. as I wasn't around when you guys/gals started. As for the font it was loosely based off the one chips used for the initial MIA flag. Usually plain fonts work best for visibility at a distance, but more elaborate fonts look nicer closer up. Swings & roundabouts on which you prefer.

As regards adding makes of car etc. to it, would you really want to limit the people that are going to buy one ? As it currently stands ANY Italian car owner in the midlands could join the club and display the sticker (i'm assuming the club is open to any Italian car and not just Fiats). This lends itself to more club members, possibly bigger meetings where you can view more than just your make of Italian car and more than likely cross make discussions on what parts etc. can be used on various cars from different makers (my old car forum found a fair few different car makers had parts that worked better if not the same as our OEM parts, usually a lot cheaper too).

Don't apologise zeewulf this is a good discussion :) we need a sticker and for that we need ideas. I like the M.I.A one personally as the "automobile" part is a great link to the car side of the club. I'ld be happy with anything tbh but the more ideas that get put out there the better the badge/sticker will be :)

As it stands with the 2 designs I posted last to get these printed would be as follows

As a circular static cling label - £25 for 50 or £38 for 100

As a paper/board insert for a tax disc holder cut to shape - £40 for 50 or £46 for 100

There would be a one off charge for the paper/board, this is for the cutting forme.

Delivery if it is to one address which would be easier would cost £10 via TNT or they could be posted which would be cheaper.

All prices are excluding V.A.T

Thanks for that! Very much appreciated. I'd be tempted to go for 100 of each: but we shall see what people say...! :worship:

Before we go ahead -- and I'm happy to pay for them; and then donate the profits to the forum (unless ben or dave are happy for them to be added to the stickers section of the online forum shop...?) -- I'm going to put my old print-buyer hat on...!
  1. I would prefer to have the three words on (MIA, rather than just MI) -- as I reckon they look classier and make the spacing easier. Can someone, therefore, with an Italian-speaking friend, confirm the spelling, please? Otherwise, I will go with Palio's suggestion (as he is boss of the Fiat Motor Club (GB)) -- as it matches FIAT's spelling....
  2. Can you also -- along with the existing version -- provide two or three alternatives with different fonts, please? I really like the current automotive-style font; but am concerned that it's not legible from a distance (mind you -- apart from the forum sticker -- very few cars stickers are). Suggest something sans-serif, but classy -- e.g. Frutiger, Gill Sans, Trebuchet, or even something 'gothic' (italic and bold, like the old Mk2 Punto badge...?) -- or even semi-serif -- along with whatever (another decorative font?) takes your fancy! Can you also ensure that the words are evenly-spaced, please?
  3. Finally, I'm presuming the design will be okay at print resolution (300+ dpi). Can you confirm, please?

Many thanks...! But, as I'm making a lot of demands of you: chips1 -- once we've agreed everything, feel free to find something in the online shop that you would like to own; PM me your address, what size and colour (if relevant), etc. -- and I will be more than happy to buy it for you, as thanks for all your hard work! (y)

Please let me know, though, if this makes sense; or if I'm asking too much of you. It would be good to get this finally sorted.... :)

PS: I know it sounds like I'm over-riding people -- which I am... -- but... :D
  1. I'm talking, here, about the original version that was posted at the top of this thread.
  2. The few people that have voted have voted overwhelmingly in favour of this.
  3. We're never going to come to a decision, unless I -- as your beloved (and democratically-elected (meaning no-one else at the time could be arsed to organize a meat-up in a greasy spoon...!)) leader -- actually draws a line in the sand (probably of leaking engine oil...). (Feel free to stage a coup, if you disagree!)

Stephen, I had a conversation with babbo_umbro who very kindly supplied the following - middle bit is my curiousity & last bit the reason! Apols - I had these on PM and didn't really think whether you'd had it (or needed it) - my bad as I believe the current phrase puts it!!

"Spelling - Automobili Midlands Italiane is fine. Automobile - singular - is feminine - plural is automobili. italiano becomes italiane as it's feminine plural ."

"Brilliant, thank you. I thought it was feminine plural from my research but was confused as it's Italiana in the name FIAT - do you know why that's different out of interest?"

"Yes - in FIAT the "italiana" refers to "fabbrica" - factory - feminine singular. The vast majority of feminine nouns end in "a" in the singular, and masculine ones in "o", becoming "e" and "i" in the plural. (Adjectives follow a similar pattern and follow the noun they describe/qualify.) Nouns ending in "e" in the singular can be feminine or masculine, with those ending in "ione" invariably feminine; in both genders the plural ends in "i"."

Thank you, both -- to Palio and babbo_umbro: who I knew would know! :worship:

Sorry Steve ( homeward ), I don't agree with the MIA tag. Infact I think its disrespectful to those that are missing in action to trivialise it like this and use it for effect. I may be over sensitive on this but I can't help the way I feel. None of my cars will be sporting this sticker. (AMI as suggested by Palio would be fine (y) )

I don't feel AS strongly as scout,
but AMI sounds better in my mind.., :)

thanks for all your hard work / research, (y)

I think Stephen means putting the words round it again not just initials.

Having said that MIA is an Italian word for my when coupled with an Italian flag so it would never occur to me to put a different connotation on it.

Good job we're not all the same though, or we'd be deciding which Union Jack to put on our red MG's!!!

If you'll all excuse me though - "someone bleeding decide please", I'm sick of it now!! :D

In reply to scout, we've been using MI for ages... -- and it stands for many things, including the following... -- many of which, for personal reasons, I could (and do) find deeply upsetting.
  • Mental Illness
  • Mentally Insane
  • Mentally Impaired
  • Myocardial infarction
  • Malicious Intent
  • Military Industry
  • Mobile Infantry

As Palio says, with the words spelled out in full, I have my doubts that anyone will associate the words with anything than what they actually say. (Admittedly, they might ask for a translation. But how many times have you been asked what FIAT means...?!)

Does no-one watch films with Mia Farrow in, without taking offence; watch the Miami Dolphins, or the Miami Marlins; or fly to Miami International Airport; or not buy anything Made In America...?

I quite like the fact that MIA also stands for Misfits In Action -- which seems entirely apposite.... :D

Here are a few more.... :p

If people really do find this offensive -- or think that I'm missing the point -- please let me know. We're only called Midlands Italia (which I see no reason not to keep using -- I just think the logo adds a lot of class to our 'corporate identity'...), because I imposed it on everyone (whether they liked it or not -- although it now seems to meet with pretty universal approval...); and because no-one could make their minds up. (Sound familiar?!) ;)

And -- although I'm willing to stand corrected... -- I'm quite happy to step-down, and let someone else take on all this, if me taking the "bleeding decision" is seen as dictatorial or non-collegiate, or insensitive....

PS: Whilst I'm having a Mini Irritation Attack, I used to work in internal and external communication; and was responsible for designing and overseeing many corporate IDs and logos, etc. -- and I personally think this one is bloody good: so, thank you again, chips1: who actually went to all the time and trouble to produce it, and even price the thing up. Nuff sed. :worship:
