Gee, this seems to be a popular thread :D Anyway, according to Fiat my car is "supposed" to have a top speed of 172 kmh. Considering my speedo marking 199 kmh that's an almost 16% diference. I know that speedometer have a bigger error towards the end of the scale, but in this case it's a digital speedo, and as I said it's capable of displaying 299 kmh, although I'll never even get close to that (maybe with a more powerful engine [?][?][?])

Anyway, it was kinda dangerous taking a pic at that speed, but still for a 1.4 carburettor engine with 78 bhp (original, not knowing what the current output is after the minor changes) not bad :D

Nope. I can get an INDICATED 118-119mph on a long hill at 6500rpm, but it just wont go anymore, trust me I tried!! :D

Speedo reads 115mph, just to be picky. Apparantly the top speed is 93 or whatever in a Cinq, I've been 120+ a few times in various mates cars and my speedo definitly isnt reading 115 when Im doing 93. Prolly a bit out but not radically out

I went on a night run in my Punto Sporting (Mk2) a couple of weeks back. Took my GPS (Global Postitioning System) along, which, amongst useful things such as telling you where you are and all that, also acts as a very accurate speedometer.

Up to 30 the speedo is bang on. After that give 10%. At 66 (speedo) you're doing 60 (GPS). Then, past 70, it's all wrong. When your speedo is showing 100, you're just over 88.

I pushed the car off the end of the clock (over 120) and I was doing 107 according to the GPS. The car would not go any faster. There was only me (16 stone), a 1/2 tank petrol, a level road and little or no wind. The car is unmodified.

That's why I don't believe anyone who can get over the manufacturers top speed. (which is usually inaccurate anyway as it's tested on a rolling road). For a good figure try a magazine test figure (Autocar or something similar).

I find the last figure 100/88 very interesting!

For the record, going downhill doesn't give you your car's top speed, if you follow that rule, dropping it from a chopper at 10k feet and measuring the speed then will give you its top speed. A top speed measurement should be non-gravity assisted or it's a "who can find the biggest hill" fight which is pointless!

I must admit that these figures where taken when going downhill, but I can stil get my car to hit 185+ kmh on a straight road with some ease.

Tempramental: Don't worry, I wasn't refering to you about my dislike of people qouting their top speeds downhill, just many in general!

Your adventure was more to find out whether the digi dash could display it, correct? At least that would have been your excuse if pulled over?! lol.

Hi everyone, at first I was just curious to see if the electronics could display any number over 2xx, since when you perform a display test the number for the hundreds can actually "build" a digital 3, so in theory the display can display 399, although no way in hell will I ever test that theory (well maybe if I got towed by an F16 :p) So being 200+ a obtainable speed I just wanted to test the car and to see if both the speedo and the car can get up to 200+ kph.

Asked and answered :D

Greetings from sunny Portugal.
