Punto (Mk2/2b) My new Punto mk2b HGT/Abarth project!

Introduction

Hi everyone!

3 months ago i bought myself a new car, a Fiat Punto mk2b HGT/Abarth. It was in horrible shape, looks and motorial. But hey, it was cheap and i was ready for a challange!

When i bought it, i knew the engine mounts and gearbox mounts were horrible so they needed to be replaced. I also knew the timing belt was due 10 years ago, but the engine worked fine.
Also, the previous owner replaced the outside mirrors with some weird ugly ones including turn signals, the original turnsignal lights removed and the hole taped off with abarth emblems. Also the emblems were replaced with horrible looking abarth ones, and lots of stickers everywhere. Ill add some pictures and continu in a reply under here

So after i replaced the timing belt, waterpump, oil and oilfilter, i started to work on the outside. I had to remove the glue, mirrors and stickers. It was a tough job, especially the last bits of black goo/glue. But it looked alot better when finished! I also removed or replaced all emblems/stickers.

Next up i got some errors, after long searching it seemed that 2 of the 4 petrol injectors were broken, so it walked on 3 legs. So i replaced those, also the ignition coils and sparkplugs. It was an expensive fix, but it drives godly now, gosh is it fast! I made a rubber lip /front spoiler for the front bumper, looks good! I also replaced the front grill for an aftermarket one without emblem to make it look more sporty

After a while i did some extra mods, like wrapping the bumper part behind the licenceplates, replacing the aftermarket grill for a better one, replacing the licenceplate holders for slimmer ones, and replaced the parkinglights and low beams for LED. Tough job to set it right so i dont blind other people, but all good now. It looks better, and i can see better in the dark! Oh and i also replaced the turnsignals on the side for dynamic LED ones.

Next up, another oil change. I use semi synthetic 10w40 oil, but i have to refill alot! Like 3.5 liters a month. So i decided to do an oil change with Petronas Selenia Racing 10w60 full synthetic. Before i will do an engine flush, just to clean all the gunk out of it. I hope this works, because i cant find leaks anywhere, not in the cooling system, not under the car, and the exhoust is not smoking abnormally. Tips are welcome ofcourse :)

did some more mods. I redirected the air intake to the front grill, i bought this car with an aftermarket open air filter so replaced it with one that is in between the air tubes. I also fitted an oil catch can, more cold air is always better. I defenitly feel the difference in power when the engine is hot!

My original subwoofer was blown, the foam ring was disintegrating. So i decided the repair it! I bought an universal refoam kit with the right dimentions. It sounds perfect now! I also replaced the speakers in the doors and at the back seats. The previous owner made a hole in the trunk shelf for a speaker (the ones you use in home lol). That speaker was broken so i removed it, but now i have a huge hole where it used to be. Time to find a new one

Does it have the two precats as were used on the Mk1 HGT? They only cut emissions on engine start. After that they just clog the exhaust and waste fuel. If you are not doing numerous cold starts, the emissions from removing them is negligible as the main cat does the proper gas cleaning job. They can be replaced with plain tubes more power and better mpg. If I'm wrong they can be put back.

Yes it does. I was thinking about removing all the Cats and replacing them with one racing Cat

Don't do that. Race cats will usually fail the MOT.

The twin cam/twin spark precats were fitted to clean cold start gasses. Older engines take longer to warm up. But the benefit is small and the exhaust restriction means the engine burns more fuel all of the time which has to be a bad thing for everyone.

Get the emissions tested with the pre cats in place. Then test again with them removed. The hot engine should be no different. The cold start should run cleaner sooner, BUT the precats have to warm up and that means the main cat takes longer to warm up. Emissions benefit is minimal. It's more about passing the regulatory test than giving a genuinely cleaner car.

If you find it's burning oil check the cam variator control valve. They are noted for leaking oil into the air intake. That causes the variator to rattle on engine start. The rattle might be a worn variator but is often that valve.

Guys please please help me with my Fiat Punto. I ran a scan OBD2 scan with my Konnwei 808 scan, I got a U 1602 code, when I searched for this code the code points to Fuel pressure sensor issue, is this correct? if it is, where in my car is this Fuel pressure sensor located, kindly please help me

Wow! Do you still have it? I love how you brought it back to life, those were some terrible "modifications".. Poor car!
