I have just purchased a 2015 500l 1.3 diesel. I'm just wondering about the timing chain/belt. I was told by the garage that its a chain that needs changing around the 130000 mile mark but the manual says its a belt that needs changing every 120000 klm or every 6 years. This is line 3 on the attached picture from the manual.

Read the manual again
Toothed timing belt excluding 1.3 multijet

The garage is right it's a timing chain
And 130k is a reasonable millage to have it changed it as these engines have a habit of snapping them if not looked after

Your totally right, I read it as 1.3 version engines look at item 3. My mistake thanks for clearing it up for me!

Hi
Mine snapped at 117k without warning
I had full service history and oil changed every 10k
I would suggest you get it done earlier than 100k
When it snapped it broke the rockers as well
I had the engine reconditioned in the end as the replacement i bought turned out to be a dog
See fiorino section

To be safe i had my chain replaced round about 95'000 miles.

I also have a 1.3 Multijet engine.

So, our car has a timing chain which Fiat doesn't tell us to change, but should be changed at around 100k miles / 160k km or so?

Correct..

Oil quality and other servicing help..

Many fleet services small vans do 250/300
Thousand miles
Other chains fail at 80,000

I have 3 x 1248's

75,95 + 105 thousand.. so far so good

I see. I have a 50k mile 500L. Own it since 30k miles and have been always using 0w30 DS1/GS1 oil (unsure what the previous owner used).
