Temp gauge went up to max and engine cut out not overheated got towed home then fault went away and engine running normally . Has happened again today ignition on and temp gauge shoots up red warning light comes on and engine cuts out Any ideas

First thought would be that the temp sensor is failing, and the engine has a safety cutout to prevent overheating causing damage.
High temp reading with engine cold points to sensor or wiring.

Find the temp sensor. There may be moe than one.
Disconnect it and see if the reading drops to zero. If it does, try to start the engine. Don't run it for too long, as it will be running richer for a cold start.

Follow the wiring to ensure not chafed or burnt against anything.

I recently had a similar problem.

Mine was a faulty thermostat which I replaced now....after much swearing! lol

Depending on the age of your vehicle, I would consider replacing the thermostat also
if it is very old.

I am now looking into replacing the said Coolant Temperature Sensor?
Trying to determine if that needs replacing also...
