Panda I got myself a 100HP - Finally!

Introduction

Hello Fellow Fiat fans.

I just got myself a 100HP - Finally! I have been looking for at least 3 years, and the last year looked very hard.
They are hard to come by in Denmark, and often fetch too much money. The word is that that just over 30 cars got imported, so as you can imagine, it's not often one comes up for sale.

I got lucky, and spotted an add for a very cheap one almost immediately. It was by far the cheapest one i had seen for sale, and the wording in the add didn't exactly make a good case for the car. It was described as being basically a shed, that needed restoration, and there was no mention of all the repairs that had been done, for example two brand new front calipers, and a new Varta battery. The mileage was lower than advertised, and the MOT ran for 3 months longer  :p

It was owned by an older couple, and their son was selling the car for them. He was very helpful all the way through, and sent a lot of pictures (the add had only 3). Still there were many unknowns, and you just never know until you drive a car do you? As I had to travel 5 hours by bus and ferry, and drive it home again, I had to really want the car badly, but I just didn't. I had planned to go early saturday, but got cold feet, and dropped it. By sunday, the regret set in badly, and to my surprise it wasn't sold yet. So monday after work, and a trip to the dentist, off I went.

I had made a bid over the phone, to knock the price a bit. As i started to inspect the car, i found that all tires were worn completely down, the exhaust was rusted away, the fogs were blind, the left rear light busted, a rear wheel bearing had gone, and so on and so on. This was on top of all the things I knew before hand. I said to the son that I was sorry, but I could not stand by my offer at all, and that I was sorry for wasting his time. I could finish my inspection, and make an offer, if he was interested. He was ok with that, and I ended up making an offer 2/3 of the price i had made over the phone.

Then it was time to meet the parents, and going into the house, it was like stepping into a time capsule. The house was built some time in the 60s I guess, and everything looked to be from that time period. Don't get me wrong, it was very nice to be there, and I really enjoyed their hospitality, but I would never in a million years have guessed they drove a 100hp. I was offered coffee, and sweets, and I started explaining the state of the car, and finally made my offer. After 5 seconds the wife said, "ok, we will do that", and then that was a deal - Sweeet!
After all the car deal stuff was done, we had good chat, and I was offered a meal before the long drive home.
It was just one of those very pleasant experiences, meeting good polite people, and a deal where everybody was satisfied.

I was allowed to take a picture of the family with their 100HP, which I thought would be a nice thing to have, to remember that day.
So with a big smile on my face, I started the long drive home.

I have never bought such a healthy car, that need that much work before. For its relatively high milage it is in very nice condition, and it shall be saved, and be loved half to death just like my other Panda which I still have (https://www.fiatforum.com/members-motors/436690-my-new-panda-newbie-saying-hello-denmark.html)
Better to keep Pandas in pairs, so they have each other for company :D

So to finish this off lengthy post a few observations about it so far:
It's quicker than I thought, and especially 2nd gear is a hoot <3, and it's more economical than I thought, especially on the motorway. I'm also surprised how totally different it feels compared to a 1.2.

I have started making a shopping list, and looking into what parts to get, but I need your opinion and you help with a few parts. Hope you are up for that :)

Have a nice weekend!
I have had the car for 5 days now, but have not really been driving it much. because the cambelt is 6 years old, and I don't trust it.
So I'm holding on to my 1.2 for a while longer :)

I have given it a good wash and a wheel clean, which hadn't been done for years it seemed. That revealed a pretty nice paint, but with some dings and scratches. They don't bother me too much, except the rear hatch, which seems to have been hit right at the handle, and pushed in a bit, which makes the metal bend a bit at either side. Oh well...
The black plastic is also badly faded, but I think I will paint it matte black when the weather turns warmer again.

First mod was adding roof bars, which I shamelessly stole from the 1.2
- But you could also say that i modded the 1.2 to more of a 100HP look :p

I did some more cleaning, and did the front of the interior and all the windows. I'm not crazy about the tinting. Is this inside the glass, or can it be peeled off?

Next mod was some new cupholder inserts, and the original ones were done for. I had an old mouse pad lying around, and it turned out to be pretty much the perfect material for the job (y)

As I wrote in my first post I have a few issues ordering parts. I order over the internet, to save some money, which means a lot of research to be sure the parts are correct. It seems that there are two types of water pumps for the 100HP. One for cars before 06/2008, and one after.

Early pump left, later pump right

Early pump on top, later pump below

As my car is a 2007 so I know the early pump is right, but seeing the later waterpump got me thinking. As you can see it has bigger impeller, and that must have been added for a reason. My car will occasionally see a track day, or the Nürburgring, so extra waterflow for cooling would be good.

Do any of you know, if the pumps are interchangeable? It looks to be the same bolt pattern. Please don't be shy to tell me I overthinking this - I sort of have a tendency to do that

The difference is usually on the belt pulley. Either impeller pattern will work so long as the teeth on the belt match, otherwise it gets chewed and slips

According to the SKF website the belt and tensioner are exactly the same for both timing belt/waterpump kits, as can be seen here:
https://www.vsm.skf.com/mt/en/searc...rcher=vsm&l=en&tab=tab_1_automotive&year=2007

So there is another reason they decided to upgrade the waterpump. My logic tells me it was done when the t-jet came into play, as it would benefit from the extra cooling.

Thanks for your input anyways, Iprescott :)

It could be the newer engine needed a bigger pump so rather than stocking two parts that risk confusion Fiat just went to the later pump for everything.

As for the cam belt - SERIOUSLY - You got lucky. Don't even start the engine until it's done!!! If necessary, tow the car. It's the start and rev-up that loads the belt enough to strip failing teeth.
Saying that, one of these will let you look at the belt teeth https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HD-Waterproof-WiFi-Endoscope-Inspection-6-LED-Camera-iPhone-Android-PC-iPad-UK/163906648653?hash=item262998fa4d:m:mGPKCSgFy27iturZjloni1A

What is your place like for corrosion? If you have road salt like UK, the back axle might need some rust protection. They are out of sight out of mind until a spring pan breaks off.

100HP Front bumpers cost a fortune and provide very little protection for radiators. Mine just shattered leaving a huge hole and bent rads.

The ordinary Panda bumper is a straight swap. Paint the middle satin black and the sides in body colour, swap the wheel spats & splitter and ordinary folk won't even notice. If you get it damaged the cost is £60 plus paint rather than £320, plus trim, plus paint. Your original 100HP bumper can be stored until the car is sold.

The 100HP wheels really suit the car but they do not fare well with potholes. A set of steels like your other Panda would cope far better and keep the originals safe from damage.

I think the T-jet needed a stonger pump, due to turbo heat, and that is the same block as the 100hp, so I think you are right in saying that fiat decided just to stock one type for all.
- I decided to order the one with the smaller impeller in the end.

Yes, you could say I got lucky with the belt for sure, but then again I have seen belts over ten years old on some cars, and they were still going. I've already had a good look at the belt (just took the top cover off), and it's not exactly good, so I'm not going to take any chances. I chose to get the towing service offered with my insurance, so I can get them to move it out to my workshop.

We use a lot of salt on the reads here, but the back axle is not bad actually. I learned my lesson from the 1.2 where I didn't take any action, and now it's pretty far gone. I plan to take it off next year, blast it and give it some rust buster epoxy, and some wax.

I would consider a "base model" panda bumper if the other one gets damaged, but I'm sure I will find a cheap one somehow, if needed. There are two scrapyards that have them here. I actually prefer the basic black grille my 1.2 has, but prefer the lower part of the 100HP. Maybe a hybrid bumper is in the cards? :D

Thanks for the heads up. Mine seem to be straight, but have very worn tires anyway, so will have to come off for now. The Multipla alcar steelies I have on the 1.2 will go on the 100hp soon. I have just painted them in a BMW silver with 2k clear, and I used center caps from the r50 mini. Looks awesome I think - hopefully on the 100HP as well :)

I've got a 100HP wheels thread going at the moment. Rough roads will buckle the standard alloys. The 45 tyres don't help but I think the wheels are perhaps a bit too light. I'm looking for some steels but older model Fiat alloys might be ok.

The 100HP bumper is VERY expensive and not very strong. I hit a deer last year which almost ripped the bumper off the car. There was nothing worth salvaging. Then I discovered the bare moulding costs £330, plus paint, plus black trim. Easily £500 if you re-use your unbroken trims. The standard Panda bumper fits just fine and you can add use your 100HP chin spoiler and wheel arch extensions. Paint the middle area black and it wont look out of place.

Keep the genuine bumper somewhere safe.

I'm fussy about cam belts because I have seen so many failures and suffered one on a Punto HGT. :(

Hi, thanks for this, I was going to ask you about the wheels on your 1.2. I also run painted steels (standard 13") and have been looking for suitable hub caps. I guess your Multipla wheels are 15"?

You kindly gave me some advice on camping in a Panda a while back and mentioned you were considering a 100HP - congrats on the new addition to your stable! Looks good, you must be happy. I enjoyed your reports on the work you carried out on your 1.2, and the video from the Nurburgring too - good to see these little cars being driven properly! Overtaking the Porsche was entertaining:p Looking forward to more of the same with your 100HP:)

Thanks Dave.

Good to know about the bumper. The 45 profile on the tires is silly small, and 195/50 is the logical option (3,7% bigger circumference) Cheaper, and more forgiving. I drive 175/55 on my 1.2, and I'm excited to try those on the 100HP. The sidewall is slightly smaller than on a 195/50 (0,7% smaller circumference). 175/55 means losing some grip, but less rolling resistance, better fuel economy, and the suspension and bearings will have an easier life too.

Thursday my 100HP got picked up, and is now safe in a garage, it's just waiting for the timing belt to arrive. so no more timing belt paranoia (y)

Hi again rmjbn1, and thank you too :)

I am pretty happy with the car, but it does need a lot of work. Work that I really don't have the time for, but I'm looking forward to getting stuck in anyway. I should have some days to tinker around christmas time, and I plan on posting my progress here.

The multipla wheels are in my views perfect for the 1.2. I have always been a fan of steelies and the whole"poverty spec" thing. Manual window winders, steel wheels etc. They sit perfect in the arches, and are the right height. It drives very well on them, but beware that they are heavy! It will rob some power, and you can feel it for sure. When pushed, the car feels even more undersprung. Driving normally it's fine. They are 6jx15 ET 31,5. Should I ever get a need for another set of panda steelies, I would go for the 5.5Jx15 (ET 31,5 also, I think) wheels from a fiat doblo. They look the same, but will be lighter. All in all, it is about looks, and the 13" wheels you drive are better suited to the car.

I really hope to take the 100HP to the ring as well, and see what difference and extra gear and 40hp makes. The Porsches can start feeling nervous now ;) :p

So, did you ever go camping in your panda?

I often find the power limits of the 100HP. I think it will feel really under powered at Nurburgring.

The OEM wheels are pretty light and I'm sure the handling benefits. The side effect is fragility on UK roads. Saying that - my BMW bike could have wire spoke or cast alloy wheels. They were virtually the same weight and made zero difference to the handling. The wires were better able to cope with impacts on bad roads.

It will be underpowered in some places at the ring for sure, but even my 1.2 was fun there, because of the elevation changes. It's around 300m over the 20.7km, so you go a lot of downhill, so low powered cars will be able reach the limits and beyond in a lot of the corners. There is a steap 3km climb all the way up to the carousel corner, and that is where you pay most of the price, but it doesn't matter much, because even hi power cars are mostly flat there anyway.
The 100hp will be more than fine, with 40 extra horses, and shorter ratios.
There are a few 100HP laps on youtube, and it looks mighty fun.

I like to keep two sets of wheels for my cars, so I'm on the lookout for some FIAT 14" steels. Choice is starting to get a bit limited for 13" tyres as this wheel size is uncommon now. I like the look of your 15" wheels, but I prefer to stay with the manufacturer's recommended wheels and tyres, as much for insurance as anything. I think high profile tyres also help on our rough country lanes in the UK.

'Poverty spec' - I like it! We had a hire car Corsa in Spain with gloss black phat alloys - I felt I was in the stupidest looking thing on the road. I missed my Panda! I like the 100HP as the bodykit isn't too extreme - but does add much more presence.

Yes, we did go camping in our Panda thanks, in May (always the best month in the British Isles) in North Antrim and Donegal. Would love to go back and visit more of the West coast of Ireland. So easy to find deserted beaches with good camping.

I could feel the 1.2 was getting a bit short of breath in your video on the run up from Breidscheid, so I'm sure you (and those pesky Porsches:D) will notice the difference! I was idly considering the merits of the 100HP and tried to watch a lap of the 'ring but I had to turn it off, the driving was so bad it made me feel ill. I hope you get a chance to enjoy your rejuvenated 100HP soon:)

I've been looking for Multipla wheels. All I found were rusty and then not a full set. For what might be saved may as well buy new. Opneo have a good range for sensible money. For ultimate long life get them zinc metal sprayed.

rmjbn1 Understandable that you want to go for a set of 14 inch wheels, especially if could potentially cause insurance trouble if you go bigger. And you are right about 13” tires getting rarer. You are also right about higher profiles being better on rough roads, but just to let you know; my 175/55r15 are very forgiving over potholes, so I think that 175/60/14 (i Think that's 14” official panda size) will ride very well too.

I see where you are coming from with the rental haha. I know that feeling. I steer away from flashy things too, and I really like my cars to have a bare minimum of kit. Things like a motorised rear hatch where you just have to press a button to close it, is in my view just ridiculous unless it’s necessary because of a handicap of course. All these “luxury” things make me lazy(er), and I don’t want to be. Besides that, it’s just another thing that can break, and cost money.
My Panda 100HP has climate control, and I really wish it didn’t. It complicated to repair, and you can’t buy parts for it! Manual cable toggles for the win :)
I’m still a bit unsure about the 100HP bodykit to be honest, but I like the silliness of it; the fake grills and rear diffuser. It’s a weird car to make a sporty version of in the first place, and only fiat could make car that brags about having 100 horsepower.

Awesome that you went camping. I saw the pictures, when I finally found your thread as you know, and I’m still baffled that you managed to sleep two people in a Panda.
I guess you must really like each other ;)
You made me want to see Ireland, and those easy to find deserted beaches!

Wow, a true ring connoisseur! I really tried to learn the names of the corners, and I remember some names, but never remember where they are...
Yup, the short breath was real in the Panda! I just keep out of the way as best I can at those uphills, and keep my indicator on. Looking forward to trying the 100HP there for sure, and maybe get a “Pesky Porsche” notch or two more in the belt

I just checked the ones on oponeo, and the Alcar ones @39£ are the ones I have. The quality is fine, and the steel is so thick that you could believe it was made for a Lada Multipla :p
At that price I would buy new as well.
Mine were only lightly used, but the thin black paint was giving up, so I considered getting them zinc spayed, but ended up with spaying the with "rustbuster" exoxy, and then silver and clear myself. The rustbuster stuff is great!

It may have changed in subsequent years and for later models, but my 2004 1.1 Active rides on 165/65 R14 79T rubber, on 5Jx14 alloy rims, as listed in the (original, 2nd edition!) owner handbook. The book also offers the base option of 135/80 R13 79T on 5.00Bx13 steel rims, but nothing larger.

The later 1.1/1.2 Euro4 EcoPandas left the factory with 155/80 R13 energy saving tyres; these are optimised for ride/handling/economy and work very well on the 1.1/1.2 models. However, as has been said, this isn't relevant for 100HP owners, since 13" wheels won't clear the (larger) brake calipers.

For 1.1/1.2 owners, 155/80 R13's are readily available in the UK.

I couldn’t agree more! I’m not convinced by this idea that adding more electric toys to a car makes it more 'luxurious' and 'sophisticated'.

I also like the idea of a 100HP without climate control. I remember DaveMcT was having issues with his recently, and the manual controls with air-con on the standard Panda seem fine to me.

The buttons for the climate control on the 100HP look like they need your full attention, a bit like on my dad’s car (Mazda) where the high-spec controls are so complicated he’s given up using it! The basic Panda's are so easy to use you don’t even need to look at them.

But then I grew up with 2CV’s, so ended up believing cars are light, simple, noisy and draughty (but fun!) things where anything electrical should be treated with deepest suspicion. Despite having ‘nothing to go wrong’, ours still managed to break down a lot thanks to dodgy French electrics (almost as bad as British:)). I still have nightmares about polishing contacts and replacing coils in the dark and the rain. Now my mum has a C3 Pluriel (it’s awful) where the roof and boot are electrically operated – yay! – with inevitable results.:dead:

I’m still baffled that you managed to sleep two people in a Panda. I guess you must really like each other.

Hee hee, er yes, I wouldn’t advise it if you’re just two friends. You might end up being more than that by the morning whether you want to or not! A double airbed is exactly the same size as the inside of a Panda, and it was comfortable, but two occupants do tend to meet somewhere in the middle.

Overall, like you I prefer a tent, but popping the boot open and looking out over the sea whilst lying in bed was rather fine. Caterpillaring out to make coffee over a gas stove in the wind was a bit less glamorous, so we won’t mention that.

I’m still a bit unsure about the 100HP bodykit to be honest, but I like the silliness of it; the fake grills and rear diffuser.

Yeah, you’re right, the fake diffuser is a bit silly. Not as bad as some though. I remember the first time I saw one of these.

223798.jpg
Plastic fake air intakes to… what exactly? I had to go and sit down.

It’s a weird car to make a sporty version of in the first place, and only fiat could make a car that brags about having 100 horsepower.

Haha! Maybe they were ahead of the curve in making a 5-door ‘hot’ (warm?) hatch? I like to think they’ve stuck to the original concept of the hot hatch by keeping it light and not adding too much power, but just making sure it handles and stops well. I like the fact that fuel, tyres and insurance aren’t expensive on the 100HP, whereas most hot hatches seem to be in real performance car territory for these.

My heater is working correctly at the moment. The most annoying feature is how it refuses to blow air on the screen until the engine has warmed up a bit. Every day I have to suffer severe misting or fart about with the push buttons to rev up the heater fan. Total crap IMO.

When the heaters system does go titsup (they have weak control cogs on the air flaps) it will be replaced with a standard Panda aircon heater. I may well repair the 100HP heater and sell it on to cover costs.

MY wife's Dynamic needs a new heater speed control resistor. I have not yet psyched myself up to strip out the steering column to access the repair.
