Punto Evo My New (to me) Evo called Eva

Introduction

On Sunday I jumped on an early train down to London and picked up my bargain Evo One owner from new full service history and a book full of paperwork as thick as a tree, including the original sales invoice, the suparguard invoice and the PDI report.

£1500 (+£30 for tax) and I joined the stationary masses on the M25 for a couple of hours to get home again.

I must say I have been impressed so far, given the price my expectations where low. Unsurprisingly the Stop-start didn't work when I picked it up, Fiat stop-start being so picky you only have to look at it funny and it won't work. So a car that had been sat on a traders forecourt for a couple of weeks and seemingly has the original battery, my expectations were not in anyway harmed by finding it didn't work.

However on my way into work this morning, The Stop-Start suddenly started working, got a whole 30 seconds before it started the engine again, that said the time was increasing at each set of lights.

On the downside though is the aircon is a little weak, its comfortable in the weather but it's not icy cold like I'm used to, so that's going to need a recharge.

N.B was going out to take some nice photos of it last night but then had to stop and help at an accident hence the ambulance and police car, (look closely you can make out my golf behind all that, As I called out my (doctor) wife to come help as well.

Blue and Me2 has also impressed me, worked with my considerably newer iPhone, plays all the songs without silly adaptors and connected effortlessly with the Bluetooth hands-free.

There are a few scratches here and there but no significant bodywork damage, a few kerb marks on the wheels. The interior is actually in very good condition, with only (almost essential on any grande/evo/2012 punto) a missing parcel shelf clip (£2 at the dealer 50 yards walk up the road)

Had to put a couple of side light bulbs in as they had both blown as had the glove box bulb.

Got some roof bars from a chap 5 miles from my house, used once then his daughter crashed the car so consigned to the shed (£40 with the original invoice from the same dealer down the road from me) genuine fiat 3 door Evo bars.

The main reason for buying it was that My Golf is not even 3 years old yet and i've already done 50,000 miles. Also I can put a bike on the roof and not care to much if I scratch it. I can load up the boot with rubish, garden waste and take them down the dump or muddy dogs. The Golf can then be pampered a bit and taken out for some top down motoring at the weekend or to go away abroard which we will be doing soon in it.

I'm i'm being honest the punto is going to be used and abused but I do like the way it drives and It is top spec for next to nothing money. (y)
I must admit, my girlfriends' Evo is rather starting to grow on me. I still prefer the purity of the early model, but I like the Evo model a lot more than I used to.

Having spent last weekend servicing it and this coming weekend doing the brakes, they definitely spent a lot more on the evo, there is a lot more underbody protection, the interior is also better, not brilliant but better, someone seriously needs to show fiat engineers what a cup holder is and what it needs to do.

I imagine that the reason they renamed it the punto in 2012 was to try and cut some costs again, as the newer cars seem to be cheaper again, I notice the newest cars have ditched a lot of the evo bits and are starting to look more like the grande again especially things like the tail lights.

I am enjoying driving it, due to it being much lighter than the golf the 30bhp difference isn’t noticeable. And it’s already taken a lot of abuse, I’ll probably keep it till this time next year then getting rid, given how cheap it was I’m hoping I’ll get back what I paid for it, then I’ll be getting something a bit (lot) faster, that’s the plan at least. Underbody protection? They improved the rustproofing?

I must admit, whilst I do think the Evo doorcards are slightly better, I do prefer the dashboard in the Grande.

I'm hoping I can eke a few more years out of my Grande, but when that sad day comes, I'd love a 2012-2018 model Punto to replace it, but I know I'll struggle to find a good 1 by then. :(

In a couple of years time you’ll be able to find a few 2018 model puntos knocking about for very little money, the problem will be the spec, a 2018 punto easy+ is going to probably be An almost identical car spec wise to your eleganza, even the same engine with the same BHP, the only differences will be cosmetic. Depending on your circumstances by then, you might want a bigger “family” car you might want a particular feature or option that’s just not available on the punto, what ever the reason to be buying a new one, the newer punto will be no different to your grande, so either there would be no point upin upgrading or, you’ll be looking for something different.

If I need a bigger car by then, I'll try and get my hands on a Tipo. :)

I intend to keep the Grande until it's had it, and if I could find a 2016/17/18 Punto similar spec to my Eleganza, I'll be a very happy chappy! :) The spec I've got now is absolutely perfect for me, and the car itself is perfect for my needs, hence why I want the same again. :)

Underside is covered in plastic panels.
But they could trap moisture..?

My 07 and 2012 dashes are chalk n cheese

The 2012 is much better for storing specs.phones.etc.

Dont understand Andys comment about rear view/look.. just return to coloured lenses?

TBH. I thought the EVO bonnet /grille was UGLY.

AND my TA appears CUTE ..'topolino style'

From 45' front..

Weird..!!

The pannes stop mud and dirt caking on the bottom of the car, there are very few points of contact between the body and the panel, so few areas for moisture to get trapped. It also allows air to circulate and and dry out areas.
Other manufacturers have been doing this for years.

Another reson is it helps streamline the bottom of the car cutting down on dirty air under the car improving the aerodynamics and fuel economy.

Agreed, the evo/2012 interior is to the grande, what the PlayStation was to the
Super Nintendo, its like they have increased the pixel count, the older grande is more angular with lots of slabs, with little shape or style to them, the Evo definitely improved on that. In fact, the major difference between the two was the interior, I'm guessing that fiat identified this was a major turn off for customers, I can't think of any other facelift model cars where they completely redesigned the dash.

The last of the UK puntos seem to have grande tail lights, just coloured lenses and no LED like on the evo and earlier 2012 puntos.

The spec I've got now is absolutely perfect for me, and the car itself is perfect for my needs, hence why

Let's not keep spewing the same drivel time and time again. You've said this so many times its clear the only person you're trying to convince is yourself.

Any car that drives and has a valid MOT is the perfect car for you as you don't expect anything from a car, and you don't seemingly want anything for yourself.
While all-out ambition is clearly not your forte, your lack of want for anything will also be just a destructive.

It will be the person who is ambitious who will climb over you and stand on you to get what they want, while you're attitude will be "I'm happy with what I have"

Why do you struggle to grasp the fact that some people really aren't bothered about having a flash car? [emoji57]

And there's nothing wrong with being content. Just because I'm not greedy/materialistic, that doesn't mean I'm not ambitious...

Why do you struggle to grasp the fact that some people really aren't bothered about having a flash car? [emoji57]

You see rather than bothering to read what I was writing (I was actually trying to engage in a sensible conversation) you did what you always do and immediately repeated your usual mantra of

“my car is the best car in the world for what I need and there is no reason ever now or in the future to want or even consider anything else”

No one mentioned “flash” cars and if I was bothered about driving or being seen in a flash car, do you honestly think I’d go and buy a beat up 11 plate punto, especially when I still have my golf?

If you were remotely open to having a normal discussion on the subject, you may also be open to the possibility that in 5 or 10 years time, you might want a panda, or you might just as easily want/need a people carrier? You might meet a partner who does want more than having a car that is ‘adequate’ or you might think in a few years time, “I’ve worked hard and put a few quid away, maybe I’ll treat myself to an Alfa Romeo or similar.

Stop taking any attempt at a conversation as some personal attack on you and your car, and also while you’re at it, stop assuming that everyone who drives what you deem to be a “flash” car does so as some sort of motoring one upmanship, if I had wanted a “flash” car I would not have bought a VW Golf, I could just have easily bought a Merc or a BMW or even a Porsche Boxster.

If someone gave me the keys to a fiesta, or a Ferrari, would happily drive both without giving it a second thought, as would many people, you seem to think that to accept anything above what you have is somehow betraying what you have.

A prime example is someone like James May, who you profess to look up to, he drives a panda, yes and he has no problems in doing so and has owned one for years, he appreciates its honesty and it’s simplicity.... he also owns/has owned a Bentley, rolls Royce, Ferrari and Porsche, and if you follow him on drive tribe has just picked up the keys to a new Renault Alpine at however much they cost.

I’m not a devotee punto fan, I am a car fan and like all cars, this is a car forum for people who like cars, plenty of people on here own fiats but they also own other cars as well, Fiat is not a religion or a political movement. It’s just a maker of cars, like many others, the world is big and you are far too young to be already limiting yourself and saying “this is all I want now for the rest of my life” you don’t have to want or lust after material things, but you can be open to the possibility that what you have isn’t necessarily all you will ever want or need.

How else am I meant to interpret it when we're talking about Puntos, and I say I want another 1 next, largely because I'm very pleased with my current 1, and your reply is basically saying that I'm trying to convince meself that I'm satisfied, and that I have no ambition, and that my expectations are low? That is pretty much saying that you think I should get something that you consider to be better.

With regards to my needs having changed when the time comes to trade the Grande in, I did actually say that if I needed a bigger car at that point, I'd buy a Tipo...

Go back and read again, at no point did I say you should get something better, what I actually was saying was if you’re happy with your current car then there is no point in upgrading it to a newer punto as you wouldn’t gain anything to do so.. You took that as your usual opportunity to repeat your go to mantra.

Now, if you can’t see anything more than owning a punto for the rest of your life then you have nothing I’m interested in talking about. You have your own thread where you repeatedly go on about how your car is the most perfect car in the whole world. Please don’t bring that over here, because i’m not interested, and you’re incapable of having a rational or reasoned conversation, without taking offence, I can have far more fun talking to a flat earther. I'll only be parting with my Grande when it starts being problematic, hence why there'll be a point to buying a newer 1. I have been torn between a Punto and a Panda: Pandas are wicked little things! :)

Was the wiring already there in the boot for the 12v socket or did you have to do it from scratch? I’m sure I’ve read that the wiring for the socket is there, but no socket is supplied from factory, but the whole for it is there.

I’ve had a look today and cannot find the wiring in my Punto Evo GP.

The wiring was already there, this was a high spec car from the factory, so there is also wiring for rear parking sensors present as well as having the boot subwoofer
