Hi all, I’m new to this site so hope I’m doing this correctly.
I have a 1.6 petrol 2004 Multipla which is our UK holiday hack.
Starting and driving is fine from cold. As soon as it reaches 4 bars on the temp gauge it decides to die. It’s splinters for 5 seconds before doing so. It will idle from cold for 20 minutes also until this problem occurs too.
Any thoughts? Or has anyone had this problem before.
Thanks in advance.
Adam

Check for fault codes in ecu.
Where are you located a member near by may be willing to help read codes.

Thanks for your reply.
I’m located in SG5 4EH.
I have a 2002 donor car. Do you think I could just swap the ECU’s over?
Plug and play style!

Unlikely due to immobiliser.
Fingers xed a member with multi ecu scan nearby will be able to help.
In meantime you could try using the engine temp sensor from your donor car.
If the engine ecu is mounted on the engine search the web for fiat stilo ecu problem dropped pins.

Happy to try all of above. Thank you
No warning lights on dash.
No fault codes when plugged in.
I did start it the other day and it ticked over for 45 mins with the radiator fan kicking in as it should. Next day, went back to cutting out again!
Do sensors become temperamental before giving up the ghost, or do they just stop working.
When the engine does cut out it’s at the point when the radiator fan should kick in.
Thanks
Adam

I see. Do you think the engine would conveniently cut out if it was getting tho hot?
I.e if the fan wants kicking in. Relay?
Or do cars just overheat causing obvious damage.

If anyone reads this and has similar problems.
I cleaned all the sensor connections with electrical cleaner.
Clanged the map and cam sensor. Opened the ecu and sprayed that with electrical cleaner.
Not sure if this was the correct thing to do but hey presto!
All seems to run fine now!!!

When a crank sensor becomes faulty, it doesn't log a fault. As far as the ECU is concerned, if it receives no signal from this sensor, it thinks the engine has stopped (such as in the case of stalling), and does not light up the EML light.

One tell-tale to look out for is the rev counter suddenly going dead (i.e. not showing current engine speed), while everything else on the dash is reporting fine.

All my diesel multiplas have had crank shaft sensors changed and they were cutting out when warm. (I would have replied sooner but had password problems)

I had crankshaft sensor failure... it did log a code but I have heard of others who haven’t logged a code. Mine cut out one day... wouldn’t start for about 20 minutes.... so I ordered a sensor straight away, it did the cut out thing another once or twice but then totally failed about smile from home one evening (all within about a week!)... it’s fiddly changing a crank sensor on the side of the road with trucks whizzing by!.. couldn’t even drive it up on my newly acquired ramps at the time!
