Panda Mr & Mrs Blu's Panda 100hp

Introduction

Well as some people already know recently bought the 100hp off Freebo.

Didn't start a thread right away as we needed to sell the 500 first so Mrs Blu could swap her insurance onto it. Which cost a whopping £7 extra on her insurance... So happy with that.

This was cheeky snap at services on way home the day I picked it up.

Got it insured couple of weeks ago once my cousin agreed to buy the 500. But it really needed a clean. So yday my cousin came to get the 500, I serviced her fellas bravo while they were here. And I cleaned the 100hp with help of Sweex. Busy Sunday!!

I bought some of that Dragons Breath stuff. Not cheap but brilliant stuff! This video is after a jetwash, snowfoamed, jetwash, hand wash and another jetwash. Stuff just melts all the fallout and you rinse it and already the paint started to feel much much better and a more brighter white

So after that, we washed it again, then clayed it, polished and sealed it. Also the first little change, new number plate holders and pressed plates.

Here's the results

Will do the inside sometime this week hopefully. Need to buy a new fairer for gearstick, been reading about that sounds like more of a gaff than it ever needed to be, classic fiat

So it's back with the oem airbox atm but have the induction kit John had on it also. Nothing much will happen to it bar cleaning and maintenance really as we only really got it as it has 4 doors and we are expecting a little one so wanted 4 doors instead of 2 like the 500. Just a few things I wanna tidy up at bit like The gear knob and fairer.

The wife was pretty upset about selling her 500 but I can report that now she is driving the Panda she likes it and even said it's a better car, result! I always fancied a 100hp too
Elon Musk said, "The best part is no part at all". It's also the hard basic philosophy of Ian Scott at Moltex.

I really like Fiat's modular approach. Why redesign everything when you already have stuff that works? I just wish they had thought a bit more about the details. Drilling and tapping holes right through aluminium casings is additional machine time. Anyone else would have stopped short and completely avoided the corrosion issue.
Those long studs and bolts all add time on the production line. Not much but it adds up.

I watched "Car Wizard" on You Tube talking about cleaning the intake valve ports on an Audi S6 V10. They get clogged with carbon. The cleaning costs hundreds and if the inlet manifold is damaged (they often are) it's £2000 for a new one. OK, its not a Panda and you should not buy a V10 if running costs are a worry, but an engine that literally clogs itself up is hardly good engineering design.

Well for those interested i did go measure the axles, really really should have done it when they were both on floor next to each other as measuring on the car proved very difficult - ended up having to measure one side to a point and then the other, just cause theres exhaust and stuff in way obviously, as such the 500 measurement is likely off a couple of mm.

But i measure it thusly, from the outer mounting faces:
Panda 100hp 1265mm
Disc Fiat 500 1310mm

so thats a total of 45mm wider, or 22.5mm per side.

I've stuck some 20mm spacers on the front, mainly cause thats ball park and i have them and they were free, but it drives really nice. My measurements show I somehow managed to get this bang on straight and it goes and stops arrow straight - so i will at some point get the alignment checked but i'm happy it can be driven. (y)

well done on getting it sorted

fiat use electric self centring, so you will have to keep an eye out for wear.

You can make the car track left, straight or right just by how the electric steering calibrated.

some detail pictures of the old 100hp axle will help others. The originalpart number for the 100hp is no longer manufactured. Possibly just superceded ? A standard panda has the correct dimensions flange to flange. Its just whether handbrakes callipers are a straight swap.

There's three rear brake types

None ABS drums
drums
discs

I can only find three part numbers for the axles. As fiat nearly always has two for each part there's a Good chance some will do more than one brake type.

breakers are full of decent axles for some reason they don't all rot.

100HP rear axle and brake.

The stub axle bolts to the axle swing arm bracket. The brake caliper bolts to the stub axle flange - NOT directly to the swing arm. Undo those four M10 high tensile bolts and the whole wheel/brake assembly will fall off the axle.

The bracket hiding behind the hand brake cable supports the hydraulic hard line to flexible hose connection. I replaced the whole line from the under body bracket to caliper with a 600mm long HEL braided hose (blue). It runs through the bracket protected with a grommet. I used a banjo fitting at the brake caliper. With hindsight, a straight male connector would have been more convenient for brake servicing.

The hand brake cable does not rub on the hard line support bracket but a rubber sleeve could be added if it's a concern.

The red patches are exposed red oxide primer where the paint has not coped with life. I should have had the zinc metal spray finished with fishing boat epoxy paint.

The ABS is sensed from a magnetic face on the wheel hub inner bearing. The hubs are the same across all (2WD) models and are also used on the 500 and Ka.

Who knows why they need different drum brake setups (ABS and non ABS) but hey.

the non abs hubs dont have the ring and are cheaper, i know that from owning centos. rear hubs are same all the way back to the uno and mk2 panda but obviously they don't have abs rings, physically exactly same size with same bearing in though.

and for unknown reasons the 500 and panda have the wheel speed sensor in different places.. And I'd assume the difference in drum/disc axles will just be so the wheel bolting face remains the same, but i'm theorising there.

Inlet port carbon build up is a issues caused by direct injection engine's
The new 1.3 firefly engines may have this issue down the line as I believe they are direct injection the 1.0 are indirect however

Right, been a while - no issues have arisen since axle swap. Still not managed to get it aligned properly as the place i want to use has been busy but its booked in on the 1st to have the axle centred and he's gonna do the alignment on the front to as its been a while.

Today cars had a little service, just oil and filters, so no pics as not exciting.. But Mrs Blu has said she doesnt really like how rowdy her car sounds so I've taken the BMC CDA off and put stardard stuff back in with a new filter. She then went out and i got a message saying shes not sure now haha. That she was driving along and then realised she was going a bit fast cause the cars usually so much louder at 60 :ROFLMAO:.

And then when i was finished i realised my copy of MES was on my old laptop and I havent reinstalled it and activated the licence key on another laptop. Hopefully I've not lost the licence key number things - I'll look at that 2moro (assuming i dont feel rubbish, had my first Covid jab this afternoon, so far just feel like i've been punched in the arm by Mike Tyson).

If you've not looked in a while, chck the clutch fluid. Mine was milky and stray cloudy. Presumably water and not good with the master cylinder being steel.

Remove the battery and its tray. Suck out the reservoir with a 50 or 100mm syringe, refill with clean fluid then pump it through the system. Use a helper to press the pedal and pull it back up for the next pump.

For system sealed with a rubber diaphragm at the top, I was surprised how cruddy the old fluid looked.

The milky fluid was under that black plastic. It's easy enough to flush the old fluid through and having a steel tube master cylinder, I think its well worth doing,

not sure I understand

As per original poster the fluid is fresh and clear

and if it wasn't you would syphon it out fist not flush.

My point was to check the state of the existing fluid. OP had done that so no worries. Others may not have.

Mine was replaced when the clutch wad done last time but was surprisingly cruddy. Steel master cylinder will not last long with wet brake fluid so just change the stuff probably bi-annually as you would for brakes.

MOT today..

I have actually won a new car for the wife at the Japanese auctions so the Mighty Panda will be up for sale in the not too distant future. Feel free to drop me a PM if you are interested or have questions, please don't post here though.

I'll write a proper advert once I have an idea of when the new car will arrive.

Will the new acquisition be getting its own thread sometime soon?
I know very little about them so would be interesting to hear your thoughts
yes of course, as soon as i pick it up I'll start a thread ;)
current situation is all the documents for registering were sent off on Friday and its on the ramp at the importer has started doing the work I asked for today. I've asked him to underseal the bottom, in the arches and drop the rear bumper and do behind, speedo conversion to mph, one reverse light converted to a fog, gearbox service (its a cvt, so needs filters and flush), engine service and to get it MOT'd. I would normally do all this stuff myself but I'm just a bit too busy and I want it ready to go so I can just pick it up and start enjoying it..

And for those who I don't know outside the forum that have no idea what I'm talking about, this is the new car
