Panda (Classic) Y10 4wd

Introduction

I should have started this thread a while ago!

Car is now back in the UK (it did very well on the drive home). Just sorting MOT.

Look how different a 1989 Italian car looks underneath compared to a 1989 UK one: oh to not use salt on the roads! Had to change the balljoint rubbers and the nuts came off so easily!

Spot also the fancy Lancia gubbins on the axle..

Thanks Freddy. Part ordered and has arrived. Been distracted by trying to get something ready for the 4x4 weekend. Thanks to andyholli for the assistance this eve. With the aid of a rubber glove and a cycle puncture repair kit we seem to have 3WD, or 4WD with some minor assistance from outside the car. Training will be offered to willing volunteers on Saturday!

Latest udate: 4WD seems to be working (I think!). Throttle body changed, seems to have helped with running (perhaps inadvertently found vacuum leak). Anti-rattle clips fitted to brake pads have cured a rattle. They won't however cure the dry joint in the rack - would appear that a clip on the gaiter has been missing for a while and the joint has gone dry. New rack sought!

If the rack is the same as the 2wd Y10 it is slightly different. Have a look at the front strut, track rod ends on a 2wd Y10 attach to a spur on the strut itself rather than the separate arm that bolts onto the back of the strut on the Panda. This attaches about 3 inches lower down and the rack is mounted correspondingly lower on the bulkhead. To account for the difference Fiat have an extension piece pressed onto what appears to be otherwise a Panda rack where the column attaches. You might be able to adapt a Panda rack to fit using your existing rack but you'll have to destroy it to find out.
I found this out as I had a Y10 rack sitting for years until I went to fit it to a Panda and discovered the difference, but I have a nagging feeling I got shot of it when I moved as I had a decent spare Panda rack anyway:( I'll have a look.
