Bravo (Classic) 99 Bravo HGT 155 - Broom Yellow!

Introduction

Hi all.

Just like to show off my Bravo HGT 155 I picked up recently.

28-11-16_001_-_Copy_2_.JPG

It was fate, picking this car up. I saw it advertised locally on Facebook but I missed out on it due to a set of bad circumstances but it was bought by a FB 'trader' who is always swapping his bangers and he just so happened to offer this very car as a swap for my absolute banger of a MK4 Golf GTi Turbo I picked up from auction a few days before. Happy days :)

I've decided to keep the Bravo for the time being as I love 5 cylinder engines (Volvo fan) and use it through the winter, it will be for sale in the next few months.

Got 2 lovely Volvos, a stunning Liquid Yellow Clio 182 and a fabulous Alfa 166 3.0 too, do love the Italians ;)

Anyway, the Fiat...
I have had the non car people taking the mick out of the Fiat, saying 'I can't believe you're down grading from the Clio to that horrible Fiat!'
So rude, I should cut these people off!!

It's not perfect, has a few small little jobs to be done.
1 - Tidy up paintwork. Respray mirror bases, boot handle and bottom corners of front bumper.
2 - Tidy interior, hasn't been cleaned in years!! Driver's bolster is torn.
3 - Give it an engine service.
4 - Sort exhaust, the rear silencer is rotten around the rear bracket and has snapped.

Other than that I'm not aware of any problems.

My Flickr album that I upload photos of this car to is linked below... Won't let me link images that aren't hosted to this site, urgh.

Cheers. I'm really pleased to have picked this little Bravo up and look forward to starting to drive it from Thursday :)

I found it quite amusing when I found out the the code name for the Bravo was 182 since I own a Clio 182, really made me chuckle.

Anyway, not done too much with the car. I have painted the door mirror bases and the boot handle, the handle hasn't gone well but at least it is the right colour, before it was faded and peeling.

I will take the seats out soon and give the interior a good clean, this car looks like the bottom of an old bin inside! Gross!

hehehe that's what i would say about the Clio (especially the MK2 with it's dodgy electronics) :p
welcome to the fold.

That Clio is perfecto, no iffy electrics on that, well apart from the climate control system which is either hot or cold, nothing in between.... :p
________________

Well, Thursday the 1st was the first time I drove this car and I'll be honest at first I was rather underwhelmed. It just can't compare to my little Clio... :(

BUT, this is because there's a problem. The car is lacking power at the top end.
Me being me I always jump to the worst possible cause - belt being a tooth out, cam lobes worn, VIS faulty etc etc but after looking over the car I noticed the hose in between the MAF sensor and the throttle body is very badly torn, about 75% of its circumference so this is the likely cause.
Found a supplier of the new hose, see other thread in the Bravo/a section :)

But one week on and over 500 miles and I am happy with this car, it just gets better and better :)

I had been speaking with the last owner of the car and it turned out that he had the car for 13 years and loved it!! It broke his heart having to sell the car he said and wants to keep in touch. He owned the car from 23k up to the 103k it is currently on.

Anyway, the main reason for this post, the interior.
It was disgusting but just like the car I was given a second chance on some lovely Leather :D
Chap had an MOT failure HGT on eBay with 2 interiors, I tried to buy the leather but we couldn't agree a price and the car sold to someone else as it was. But, I just happened to look on eBay about a week later and the same car was up for breaking! The buyer was using the engine and 'box for a project they were building so I ended up with the leather after all, funny thing is I got them cheaper than I offered the previous owner of the car for them, result!!

I can confirm that you can fit a whole other interior in your Bravo as the one photo will show :p

I have to say, what a difference, it looks stunning in here now, I'm so impressed with the quality of the leather in what is a fairly cheap car, compare it to the leather available in say a Ford Focus of the period and you will really begin to respect the Fiat. Also impressed with how well put together the interior is! Well done Fiat!

The car was quite dirty inside so when the seats were out I thoroughly cleaned the carpet etc. Found 71p which made my day haha
Sooooooo much nicer, rather than being embarrassing it is now something to be proud off ;)

Loads of photos here if you can't be bothered to click on the attached ones...

I didn't even realise the cloth seats were heated until I removed them lol
A nice find though ;) Anyone can have the cloth interior for free btw if they collect soon/before I throw them away!

I'm so pleased with the interior now, it has really lifted it. Yes I know it's from an earlier car so the colour of the plastics don't match the dash and carpet etc but who really cares, Ok, I do a little :p

Also noticed the stitching in the seats is blue, very nice.

glad to hear it (y)
my experience just from driving around behind other cars, is that Renaults (more than any other make) from the early 2000s often have bad earths on the tail lights.
how many people are familiar with seeing Clios' in this state?
:p

anyhoo, back to the FIAT, lovely, nice to see it getting some attention, I bet it'll get under your skin like they have to all of the rest of us here, and you wont be able to bring yourself to sell it in the end.

Looks rather tidy inside now you've given it a good going over (y)

Very nice!

Cheers man :)

TBH, you're not wrong about the Clios, I've come across some funny 'glitches' but not on my own cars thankfully :p

It's already under my skin, I did have a Marea saloon earlier in the year (with 10 months MOT that cost £105!) and I was thoroughly impressed with how it drove tbh. Really struggled to sell that, not because I wouldn't but more no one wanted it haha, all things considered I lost 21p on it, boo!!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/83938051@N08/albums/72157666255693826/with/25888544072/

But no, only yesterday while driving the Bravo I said to my passenger (who hates the car) that I'm really starting to like the car, they're still not impressed, I think the colour is what puts them off mainly, I would prefer it in another shade tbh, it just doesn't match the Renault's Liquid Yellow glory :p

Great upgrade. I agree the Bravo leather seats are really nice quality. Smells so nice too.

Yes, after rereading my post I realised that's one point I forgot to mention, the leather smells fantastic! It triggered a childhood memory of my Father's Volvo 850, that smelt the same inside!!

I do absolutely love leather I will admit that, a bit too much perhaps ;)...:p
Out of all the cars I've kept for myself only 1 has not had leather if you don't include this car as I've changed that.

This leather is probably the best £60 I've spent on an upgrade for a car????

Over a month since an update? I'm still here!
I have to say this car has provided a month of happy Fiating, zero issues to report.
In fact, on Tuesday we did a 450 miles round trip completely trouble free, less than a tank of fuel used too, did around 41-43mpg according to my calculations... Not bad at all!

Anyway, I realise I haven't posted any photos of this little beast all clean so I'll add some to this post.

Nothing else has changed, put some clear side repeaters in which has lifted the exterior slightly but that's it.

I did try to replace the split throttle body hose by using a straight piece of silicone pipe and venting the oil breather pipe with one of those mini filters but it really didn't like it, I don't want to block it either. Keep trying to get hold of a new solution.

Not much else to say so onto the photos...

If you' looking to upgrade your rear lights I have these for tail lights...

...I was getting fed up of modern cars with their dazzling LED Cree Lumen things, especially in in traffic when they are so thick they can't do a hill start without sitting on the brake pedal. I thought I'd upgrade and drive to a higher standard to make them look worse. ;)

They're a big improvement and because the ones that are supposed to produce red light I no longer have pink fog and brakes. :D

i just love a bravo in yellow - not far from me either actually, i'm in the forest of dean ;)

not sure i'd much compared the clio to the bravo tbh, they are both hatchbacks but similarities kinda stop there, very different cars. I used to be proper anti-renault but tbh my neighbour (well old neighbour as they moved last month) is proper into her renault sports and I quite like them, even nearly bought a 182. She had a blue 182 cup and now has a LY 200.

tbh i think i preferred the 182 myself but both are nice cars, she did have a crappy 1.2 mk2 as well which was a complete POS. My old 155HGT felt much more grown up refined car to a clio 182 though, completely different.

Anyway, nice to see another bravo being actually looked after, particularly a hgt in yellow - i kinda jealous, i want one! lol

nice car, happy to see an HGT, very rare. and with your improvements even better

That's why I picked it up, had to save the poor thing.

Nice, definitely something to consider. Upgraded reverse bulbs are always welcome :).

Oh no I agree, they are completely different cars, the Bravo is much more grown up, the Clio is like an over active child haha.

I prefer the MK2s to the later cars too, much more 'raw'.
_______________________________________________

Right then folks, I realise I hadn't updated this in a while, well I stopped using the Fiat in February as another car came my way (A Volvo C70 Coupe) but bored of its grown-up-ness so time to play Fiat again :)

Back in January I started to clean the car up further, over the years the car seems to have only had the odd quick wash and dirt has built up in all the grooves around the windows etc. Tackled with an old toothbrush and some fairy liquid, not the most high tech solution but effective ;)

Also ditched the airbox for an open cone filter, much better low down torque, genuinely surprised! Located it neatly at the end of a lovely shiny pipe that is no longer shiny, damn wet and muddy Herefordshire!

But, my main news this time is that I finally found a good condition throttle body hose :D, that took way too long... But only cost £11.00 posted.

Also bought some new rear discs and pads to put on, the discs cost less than the pads haha. Total including delivery was £27.72 ;)

New pair of front tyres too as the one kept deflating and where both down to 3mm or so too.

Anyway, onto the photos.

The Police are only willing to "allow" three hundred but there are over a thousand who have offered to turn up. We may just be in the same place officer not part of the official convoy at all. :D

Not gonna lie, was considering it as it's not far away, would have preferred to take the Clio tbh but the Fiat also qualifies :p

Will be do some trips later in this little thing for the first time in 4 weeks, can't wait. I might actually experience full power rather than the coughing I was getting WOT at high revs :D
