Re: The Camel Panda!

Hi,

I hope somebody can help me.

A bit off topic as its not about the Camel, Im having problems with my grey Sisley.

It is not starting and i think its the ignition switch. I did find a thread in which someone was having what seemed to be the same problem and they got instruction on how to hot wire it via PM. but i cant seem to find that thread anymore.

Basically when i turn the key the dashboard light turn on and i can turn the headlights on, then when i go to start the engine; nothing the starter motor doesn't turn and the headlights don't dim, its dead .

Ive taken the steering wheel, all the switches and shroud off. I've tested for a loose connection on the ignition switch.

I think the next step is to try "hot wiring" it to see if the switch is at fault.

Does anybody know how to do this? If you do can you share the knowledge probably with a PM .

I hope you can help!

Hi,

You'd be better concentrating your efforts on the starter motor itself - they are fairly prone to fail on Pandas. Test the starter itself and also check the wiring to the starter.

Re: The Camel Panda!

Thanks for the advice, the starter motor is positioned so awkwardly I've found it hard to get to. I'm going to spend some time over the weekend trying to fix it so any advice is really appreciated.

Re: The Camel Panda!

One thing to add, is when the problem started i was driving along and the key flipped back in the ignition switch as if a ghost was turning the engine off and since then it has failed to start.

Sounds weird i know.

Yes does sound weird! Haunted Panda?

The starter is best to access from below, two nut and one bolt to remove.

Re: The Camel Panda!

Some thoughts...

If it isnt making a clicking noise when you turn the key try tapping the solenoid above the starter motor with a metal bar from the top. It might be sticking and tapping can free it up temporarily. The solenoid is the smaller cylinder attached to the starter motor itself.

If you have a multi meter you can take off the wire on the solenoid and check if it becomes live when someone turns the key.

Finally it could be the battery as there can be enough to run small electrics even headlights sometimes but not the starter. Could try bump starting car with ignition on?

Assuming all the fuses are ok?

Hope that helps!

Re: The Camel Panda!

Mine did exactly this for a while, starter motor was sticking. I used the small wheel brace from under the bonnet to bray it for a while and it'd eventually unstick and turn. It continued to play up right until the moment when David gave me another starter motor to try, and the fear of being swapped out has obviously cause it to raise its game as its not done it once since then.

Re: The Camel Panda!

Thanks For the advice, it was the starter motor after all. The solenoid was jammed but after unjamming it the motor itself is shorting. I've taken it apart and looked for anywhere there could be contact but it just keeps shorting out.
so I've ordered a new starter.

The Next question is:

When putting the steering wheel back on my Sisley i can't get the horn button to work. The horn works when one of the springs touches the steering columb but the button won't make contact with the centre of the column.

Can someone tell me if i am missing something from this assembly?

It just seems like i must be missing a component as it seems an impossibility for the button to actually complete the circuit.

I hope one of you can help, cheers R

Try cleaning out every single gap on the brush races. Graphite from brushes gets notmaly stuck inbetween bridging out not allowing to get full speed of the rottor or eventualy shorting out.

Re: The Camel Panda!

Are you fitting the screws that secure the horn push? These are what actually connects it to the steering wheel and therefore column to earth. Without them the horn cannot work.

Re: The Camel Panda!

Hi, so I've been doing bits and bobs. learning as i go along.

Ive changed the engine and gear oil, fixed the leaking oil seal etc.

The body shop hasn't worked its magic on the door yet, there are a few spots of rust on different areas of the body so I'm working out whether its worth just doing the door or sort the whole body in one go.

The guys who owns the body shop absolutely loves it so has offered to do it for cost.

I am fabricating a new solid full size roof rack because the existing one wasn't up to much, I've basically done all the welding and the powdercoaters should pick it up on Thursday.

Ive made the new roof rack with the thought of putting spot lights along the front edge of it. If i do this i might also matt black the bonnet with vinyl like some of the old Camel Discoveries.

I will keep you updated on progress, although I'm only getting time to do bits and bobs at the moment.

Re: The Camel Panda!

In other news,

I'm having trouble with my grey Sisley.

After changing the starter motor it was starting and running fine for a bit.

But now no fuel is getting to the engine, i changed the fuel filter but nothing is getting pulled from the tank (its not empty, i put an extra 5L in).

I don't know whether its dodgy old fuel lines or the fuel pump.

What do you reckon?
