Cinquecento My 1994 Cinquecento SX 0.9

Introduction

Welcome to the progress thread for my 1994 Fiat Cinquecento SX

Hello! - I have recently acquired a 94' Cinq SX, This will be my 5th Cinquecento & one I do not intend to split ways with.
I have gone back to what I started with 7 years ago when I bought my first car, a 1993 Cinquecento SX, Witch I kept till I bought a lovely red Sporting... witch I wrote off (n) and got a very cheap S witch I ran out of money to keep. :p

After a year or two on a scooter I bought a nice yellow Sporting witch I loved.. but unfortunately the massive amounts of rust was to much of a project for me, at the time given as it was my only car.

However I return, I bought this car only as a project/fun car and have another daily vehicle, along with a larger budget!

So enough of the blab, here is the beast.

Very clean, Silver SX with 39,000miles, No rust found  YET. only minor surface rust on suspension and brake components as you would expect with any car in the UK.

More progress today!

First thing was buying the correct thermostat, because there is two for the 899, witch I was not aware of.. only difference being the size of the sender unit that bolts into it.

Also picked up some new equipment while I was at eurocarparts, as I had a old IVECO bottle jack and a single old axle stand.

All nice an clean.. an mostly new! :yum:

SB1500

  • 2 x Wire brush (After awhile the wire starts coming out of them.) £6
  • 1 xPrimer 2.5 Liters (Still got loads left) £20
  • 1 xRoller + Brush/tray set £4
  • 6 x Stone guard Black Spray Paint 500ml (I have used 4 and a half) £26 total
So £56 and a day's work.. A lot less if you bought a wire wheel for a drill, not sure on the cost of those!

I used a roller and brush to do primer as it wasn't the finished coat and the undercoat is thick enough to cover the brush marks most of the time.

I think with the panda I used just a can of wax oil and a brush witch was much cheaper, just tends to look a bit messy and can be fairly messy if you are working under the car for a long time after.

I would recommend it for sure. (y)
The Panda doens't get much love and it used as a van for the most part and still not any rust to speak of!
I will be checking the rear axle however this week after some of the threads I have seen.:bang:

If I lived in England I'd probably ask if you'd do this for me for a small fee if I provided the materials!

Looks so well done too. I don't even know how I'd clean the underside of the car well enough

Mate, you a legend and the reason old fiats survive
Thanks, very kind. :D

Looks like you need a new parcel shelf mate.

I do indeed, I have been offed one by a friend, just a case of getting a show we are both attending :)

The car didn't have a shelf at all, I have 3 with holes as I have replaced them in every Cinquecento I have bought.

As a temporary measure with mostly things I had around the house I did give fixing it a try.
Cut some plastic sheet out to fill the holes and glued it on to the shelf, then covered it in a thin foam sheet and glued that down then used a old roof liner, that was ruined at the front, and glued that over.

Looks fairly presentable in till you open the tail gate.

tenpastnine What you did with your Cinq underneath has really motivated me to get under my Panda done.

Did you wire brush through the original metal finish or was that just to cut through the dirt? I've always been scared of making it worse than it currently is due to that.

Secondly, will that stone chip stuff hold up?

My car is clean underneath. I want it to stay that way for another 5 years at least hence the enthusiasm to keep it wel protected

I did the same as what I have done previously, clean the underside as best you can, Normally use a scourer (scourer side) sponge because those sponges are about 30p for 5 or something so you can just throw them when they get clogged up, and hot soapy water.

You will be going over it with a wire brush so it doesn't have to be perfectly clean.. then any surface rust spots just go over with the wire brush till all the flakey stuff is gone and it feels smooth, then make sure you use hammerite, or ku-rust or anti corrosion primer at least on the parts where bare metal is showing (I did the full underside of the car but its way over kill).

An use paint or a wax oil to cover any parts where stone chips could appear or paint is most exposed to the elements. (wheel arches and places stones are thrown up are the most important.)

I think the stone chip stuff seems solid enough, goes on thick and is at a good price point where I don't mind putting quite a few coats on the bits that are most likely to get chips.

I would say that on the panda the wax oil has held up very well though an that was applied with a brush in less than a couple hours, just needs some attention on jacking points and wheel arches and its done 30,000miles since it was done!

Really with the thickness of the coats fiat used on the 03-11 panda's any paint or coating you add can't be worse than it was originally (y)!

Just have confidence and allow you're self the time to do it and do it right, prep is everything when it comes to painting.
If you are spraying paint then I would suggest looking up youtube tutorials so you don't end up with runs. (its really very easy though!)

Speaking of treating the underneath, need to get that done on my classic Panda... got the Kurust and paint ready, just need to go over with the wire brush :p

This Cinquecento looks so clean, great job on this one!

New plates look great too. I really need to get some new ones for my Panda, where did you get yours from? For £15 or so I can get a couple off eBay (pressed) but I'm wondering what ones you went for! :D

Wouldn't mind some pressed plates of my own! Are they reflective etc and legal to use still? :)
Ever so slightly gray area. As long as it's reflective, you should have no problems. People I know with metal plates have never had an issue, and a post I looked at where people were discussing only had one person that was pulled over for them, and that's because they didn't have the BSAU145D mark and the postcode/identity of the plate manufacturer on them.

When looking for pressed plates, just look for ones that specifically state that they are legal, and make sure that they have two separate marks on the plate under the numbers/letters - one being the BSAU145D mark and the other is the manufacturer identity. If you do that, you should have no troubles, I hope (y)

They have all the legal tags on them, they are really fine though so from a distance you can't see them. (y)

Its only cars after a certain age that have to have those tags?
My old Cinquecento didn't and I never had problems.
Yep, those are the tags! Thanks for the link, will have to get some, or at least one similar to it, I see a couple with the free fitting pieces (sticky pads/show plate case). Do you just use sticky pads for yours?

I'm not 100% on the law for it, all I know is that there's meant to be a postcode and BS code on plates like this so that they can be traced. Not sure if there's a certain age of car that is exempt or not...

My guess is that you never had problems with the old one because it never needed to be checked. If ANPR fitted police cars, CCTV, speed cameras and the like can see your numbers/letters, you should be all good. But if you don't have the codes and your plates are being checked by the po-po, I've heard that you can be fined!
