Punto (Mk2/2b) A pretty worn year 2000 mk2 5-door Punto

Introduction

Well, there is a story to everything...

For many years I've been driving Alfa's and Citroën (the real ones with hydaulics, not the new caffelatte-designed Peugeot-Citroëns)
Having an Alfa 156 2.5 V6 and a Citroën Xantia 2.0, I was like paying a lot of money to the oil-companies and an awfull lot of money to the Danish Govenment in penalty-tax'es.
The Busso V6 is slightly broken (exploding waterpump) and I'm using that to take the engine apart and doing a lot of nice things to it.
Engine, cabin and more.
But thats expensive and takes a lot of time (a looooot of time...).
I'm really happy with the Xantia as a practical donkey and it's extremely comfortable.
But as an everyday car, commuting to- and from work, it was bloody expensive, drinking petrol and oil.

So I more or less swapped it for the mentioned Punto.
The Xantia was absolutely rust free !
The Punto is not rust free..., as it turned out
Most things seemed to work on the Punto.
On the Xantia I broke the internals of the drivers door, so it couldnt open the window and I had to use a separate key for locking/unlocking.
A couple of months ago, the ABS on the right front broke.

That did it !

Wanting to save a lot of money also, I startet out looking at Cinquecento's.
I really like the square look they have :)
Having tried some, I found out, I would only go for a Sporting.
The 0.9 was terribly, terribly slow, but the Sporting was ok-go-cart-like.
Thinking it over for a couple of week, I desided it was gonna be to small and my feet are simply just to fat :p

And I must admit to being a 4-door man :)

So looking for economy, 4-doors, amble cabinespace and bootspace, the Punto came in to play.

It was'nt a first contester.
I absolutely hate the rearend design on the Mk1's and I hate the headlight design on the new Punto's.
But the Mk2 Punto's are somewhere in between...
Not perfect, but almost somewhat ok...

punto03.jpg

Looked around for a while, but not that many for sale.
Found two ones.
One metallic blue and a bit to expensive.
One metallic red and very cheap...

Both of them placed many hundreds of kilometers away, so going to look at them and try them would take almost a complete weekend and a lot of money.
Writing to and from the dealers for several days.

Finally setling for the metallic red.
The color does a good job in hiding/integrating the hideous rearlights, but also makes the car look a little "old man driving".

Well I'm not that young any more :-D
And swapping the Xantia in, it was gonna be very cheap :)

So the other weekend, my son and I took off in the Citroën and drove west for many hours...
Arrived at the Punto and found it to look more tired than on the pictures, more dented here and there and a tired paint in general.
Given it is 6 (!) years younger than the Xantia, it looked actually older :(
But mechanically it looked pretty much ok anyway, and sounded ok to.
And everything electrical worked !
So finally swapping the cars and we drove of in the Punto !!!

Thats how the Rosso Scilla became the new member of the familly.

But problems would arise in the future !

This weekend was reserved for front-brakes.

A first glance, they didnt look that bad (well, old factory calipers always look ****).

20150926_121944.jpg

But take a look at the brake pads.
The old and the new.
The old clearly below it's technical and legal limit (how could this car get a MOT with brakes like that ?)

20150926_122659.jpg

Brakes are easy work, when pistons and rubbers are fine.
In no time, I had the new disk on and new pads in the calibers.
The old disks were actually quite fine and well above minimum thickness and without wobling.
Disks newer than the pads ?
Personally I would NEVER put on a new disk and keep the old pads.
But one disk can easily live through two pairs af pads...

Then it was time for changing the swaybar outer bushing.
After removing the old worn bushing, I used a variety of timber, to bend the swaybar, so I could mount the new bushing.

One small hole, and a stiff piece of... :-D
20150926_150532.jpg

I cleaned and polished the rod-end to a quite shiny finish.

Tried making it penetrate the bushing with a little vaseline (NO I'm not :-D ), but it didnt really work, and it got stuck and was a bloody menace to pull of again.
With som dishwasher sopy, very sopy water, it went on with some heavy pushing by hand
Easy !

Oh I dried out the right headlamp also, with a lot of hot air and some holes I drilled in the unit.
Yes I remembered to plug the holes again :)

Did I mention the problematic rear lamp, the right hand one ?

I think I've fixed it, but it's a **** fix, beause the connector is **** !

If it fails again, I'm gonna cut the connector and "liberate" the ground-wire, so I can make a direct wire-connection to the groundconnector-spade in the lamp unit.
Changed oil and oilfilter also.

AND I, somehow, also succeded in changing the airfilter. No thanks to FIAT !
Had to drill four of the rusty screws.
I really hate FIAT ingeneers. They are bloody amateurs and just plain bad !
I have tried servicing BMW's and Mercedes Benz cars, and I really hate those cars, but they are just better built, better engineered and finished of.
Not to mention SAABs, that are just better all the way.

I should be boss of FIAT !!!

And the way to place the filter on top of the throttlebody, and the rubberhose...
Just some minor and obvious adjustments, and everything whould be easyer at the factory and a hell of a lot easyer servicing later on.

FIAT's in need of intelligence !

Rearlamp, headlamp, frontbrakes and swaybar, oil- and oilfilterchange and airfilterchange was all I got done this weekend.
I'm getting slower with age !

Never got around to changing the bulbs in the heating/ventilation part of the dash, and still needs to give the interior a realy good clean, and more anti-rust treatment in the wheel-arches and underbody-components.

your pads look good compared to what i had years ago, was making scraping noise when braking cuz all material from pads was gone and ofcourse sticky caliper

Scarypads :)

I'm pretty "anal" with my brakes, so never have them worn to that extent, or with deeply grooved disks.
My experience is, that it also is bad for the brake piston, that likes to stick a little, when pads are that worn.

It means that I do this every second year - 50000km - witch is a bit sooner than most people.
I just like having good and working brakes :)

When I got my old Prelude 2.0i, it had pads close flisko's.
They actually "fell off" when I was braking, and got wedged between the caliper and the disk.
Cant find a picture, but've got one of the nicest looking pads that was on the car.

Now remains to find that slightly ratling sound I have in the Punto, in its left front side, when I drive over uneven terrain.
Tried pulling and shaking everything round the wheel, suspension and that, but cant really find the source.

tbh both of those disks look nasty

I suspect they both are ribbed?
But pictures can decieve, hence why i'd be having a DTI or good feel with the proding finger

ziggy

Yes the old disk's had some grooving, but it could have been maschined and still have enough thikness.
Put on new disk's, since its easy'er and cheap, and I like all new brake components :)

Not much has happened since last update.
Havent had the time...

The grounding problem with the rearlights are a pain. Have to get it soldered propperly

A new and stronger battery has been fitted, now winter is comming.

(cant upload pictures ???)

Well, the airbag warning light has come on !
Suspect it has something to do with low voltage (?).
The car has always been really bad at supplying voltage to equipment in the cabin, like GPS's, phone's and stuff.
Even with the new battery.
And the battery is being charged enough, so I dont know what is going on ?
Could it be another grounding problem, again ?
Normaly I only charge one item at a time, but the other day I had to charge the kids NVidia Shield tablet and the GPS at the same time. After 20 minutes, the airbag warning light came on.
And it dosn't go away !

Oh, and the jack went through the floorpan, with the rear left lifting point :-(

Hate the ****ing car !!!

Time for an important update !!!

The pretty worn Punto is close to being dead.
Stil just badly wounded.
Headgasket failure.
Now it sit a few km's from home and is waiting to go to the scrapyard...

Well I knew it was a ****ty car, but it did its job okay.
So went out and got another mk2, but in better condition, with aceptable rust, acceptable km's, and looked after and new MOT.

It had small issues that I used to get it a bit cheaper, knowing I could fix them.
New thermostat was one of them, and the broken release-cable for the bonnet.

The thermostat was burried deep down:

After changing, refilling coolant and removing air from the system, I fixed the engine bay a little, to make it winterready and better looking.

The snapped bonnet cable was easy, but it also turned out, the bonnet lock is damaged.
So is gonna take the one from the old Punto.

Oh, the right rearligt was cracked on the new Punto, so swapped with one from the old Punto.

After that some general rust-proofing and preparing a to-do plan for April/May next year, including minor paintwork and changing the front left fender.
The car drives a lot better than the old one in every way.

Did some extra rust-protection, but regarding how destructive Danish winters are (mostly due to an agressive road-salt-mafia), I need to do even more...
And to secure all electric plugs and contacts, as the salt-fog and salt-saturated air, kills electrical connections...

Tried to get the tow-bar of the old Punto, but ended up with two (!) bolt that I simply could not do anything about, without air-tools
Removed everything else I could use...

Changed all the bulb's in the centerconsole, and found that it didn't help.

Then I noticed that the numberplate light wasnt on, so its really a fuse-problem !
(number 51, a 7.5 A)
And couldnet find any of the 100+ fuses I have laying around

To day, the old Red went the last couple of km's to the scrapper.
Not sure if I'm a little sad (?), but its totally used up.

Looking old and tired, but wheels changed to old worn ones, rear lights, knobs and bulbs and a lot of other stuf has been removed.
She ends up being a donor. (y)
Thats good !!!

Good bye and see you in Fiat-Valhalla.

Next weekend is Clutch Weekend with the other Punto.
Never done a clutch before, so gonna be exiting

Spreading oil on the different parts of all of the clutch mecanism, the clutch started behaving better.
So continued with that and bled the clutch system.

Dont know if it did any difference

Well, thats I changed oil as well and..., was supplied a wrong oilfilter...
Now the car stands without oil, until I get a new oilfilter...
So did some ekstra rustproofing.

Found a big hole in the floorpan, for a missing plug.
Looking for something that fits ???
Dont wanna go through winter with that hole and get it filled with salt.

Getting the oilfilter tomorrow (sunday)...
