Stilo Stilo ABarth 2.0v turbo build

Introduction

Hi all
This is thread on my Stilo Abarth build, a mate and i are building a track orientated car, although it will also be road legal.

We started off with a White Abarth that was bought from Flee bay, unseen apart from some pics that were on the listing.

By all accounts the only thing wrong was it wouldn't go into gear after a replacement box was fitted, i spoke to the local indy Fiat person and was informed it just needed setting up on the computer. but as the engine was being pulled anyway i didn't bother having it done.

Engine started and ran like a swiss watch, engine is for sale with gearbox and all the ecu's that would be needed.

it only took us a day and a half to totally strip out the engine and internals.

This is how clean the engine bay was when the engine was pulled out.

if you're after massive power from the 20vt have a word with John at MCS
http://www.midlandscarservicing.co.uk/index.html

last time i checked he was running a slightly bored out (2.5l) 20vt running at 717BHP

i would have thought your rather conservative 300-330BHP would have been easily achieveable with gasflow, boost and fueling tweaks

I will get some tweaking done to the engine, 717hp might be a bit much in the Stilo, i have a car with 600 hp +, its a large capacity engine so it has loads of torque, with small capacity engines its generally all or nothing power, good for 1/4 mile sprints but driving around town i don't think so.

I think 300-330 hp would give us a good spread of torque and power and be drivable, there is also another side to this, i won't have to strip and rebuild it every year. :D

well its rained again today so into the workshop we went, engine was put back into the hole and it's engine mounts day, maybe a bit of an overkill but they aren't going to break :)

Nearside, left, front mount.

The plates are 8mm thick, the rubber bush is about 70mm in diaameter, the bolt is going to be 16mm, the plate is going to be welded to the chassis leg, the round mount will be welded to a plate that will fitted to the front gearbox mount.
The mount has had a casing made for it, 3 stainless pieces of tubing, one inside another, then welded all the way round both sides, the bush is a tight fit but removable and we can now weld it to another plate without melting the rubber.

Offside, right mount.

Another casing was made the same as the other side, the original mount is a big casting that holds the alternator and power steering pump, the top was cut down but using a hole saw, this allows the mount casing to sit in a recess, it then got a bolt welded to it to hold it in place, we will put a strap over the top as a secondary fixing, we don't want it to break do we :) .
the mount is going to have to be moved out slightly aas it is running quite close to the belt :bang:

Well that's a days work, doesn't look like we did much, it strange how these things take up so much time.

Had a few late nights last week, progress has been good, the engine is now fully supported on three engine mounts, we made a couple of rear ones but all ended up hanging down too much, so limited the ground clearance.

We ended up using the original rear mounting but in a different plane (see pics)

We are using the Coupe dash and part of the centre console, new fixing were made to hold the forward console, then the gear lever was positioned and studs welded in to hold it, everything has to come out again soon as the mountings for the roll cage is soon going to be fabricated.

On Wednesday i had a call from my mate Andrew (co owner) that he had bought a two post ramp, how much easier is it going to be now.

This year we are only looking for about 300bhp, next year will be a different matter :D
My mate and part owner has found some info about 4 wheel drive for next year, so power will have to be about 500bhp :D

I had better start saving

how far have you got with your build ????

Just a quick update

Not a lot has been done in the past week or so, i have been very busy with my business, the run up to Easter is when everyone wants there boats serviced and launched, should ease off a little in 2 to 3 weeks and we can get building again.

I started to do a bit of wiring in the boot area, mainly rear lights, heated rear window, wiper etc, also wired the doors mirrors, can't do a lot as the dash needs to be removed again to get the roll cage in.

We had someone come and look at making the roll cage, he was supposed to turn up the following day but never showed, so a reminder call on Monday is on the cards.

Don't you think a GT3076r turbo is a bit big, unless you are looking for 500hp plus and are you still leaving it front wheel drive ????
Like the idea of a Merea estate 300hp +

Hi guys
Well i have been badly let down by the guy i was building this car, with not a lot being done in the 6 months, i have started doing the wiring but was told to stop until the roll cage was in and yes that was his department.

So i have taken all the bits and the car back, i cant finish the car myself as i am no fabricator.

The engine is in, gear lever and cables fitted, clutch and brake peddles made and fitted, 4 pot brembo's fitted and the steering rack has been changed to the hydraulic one from the coupe.

I need to shift the car on now as i need the room,

If anyone is interested in the project please Email me will be going on ebay in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks
Ian

I will still keep popping in now and again, as the wife is keeping her Stilo Abarth as she loves it
