Punto (Mk1) Punto 75ELX 1996.

Introduction

I needed some small and cheap car, first option was Seicento, but they are rather expensive, mostly without any extras.

So i looked for Punto mk1, checked about 10-15 cars, all had corroded underbody.

Found one but high mileage/km, 197 000km. But runs smooth and quiet.
Pretty undamaged inside, no rust on floors, power windows, original IR remote lock that works, and A/C, but no power steering-but it has 165/65R14 tyres so its not big deal.

First of all i changed: front discs, pads and break lines, front wishbones, refurbished steering rack, rear shocks, rear break drums, break cilinders and pads, handbreak cables, gearbox and engine oil, thermostat, engine coolant, valve cover and coil holder gasket, belts, tensioner and pulleys, spark plugs
Added LPG filter between valve cover breather and air filter box to avoid oil on intake

You'll enjoy it - the 8v 75 poss the most lively of all Puntos, tho a bit down on power compared to the 16v 85. The 75 head is the one most favoured by the racers cos it breathes so well. Superior interior. I loved mine, went to 170k miles as far as I remember, before multiple mech problems on top of serious rust around the skylight finished it off.

you looked at 15 cars and all were rusted, what the hell are people selling

Yes, that was on my mind when i saw some of the cars .
When i was looking advertisements and call sellers i only asked for condition of underbody, didnt mind engine condition, torn seats etc.
Its unbelievably what people think is good condition and ask for them even 1000+ GPB, thats sick.

sounds pretty standard issue for mk1 punto's to me.. they are really bad for rust really, especially over here in the UK cause of the salt on the roads in winter... Not sure why they feel the need to waste so much money spreading salt everywhere when they could just make winter tyres the law or something and are cars wouldn't all rust worse than everywhere else.

Depends, there were both versions. If you have separate high and low beam (two separate reflectors inside headlight), then you have h1, otherwise is h4. Some versions had el. adj. beam, depends if you have a selector for beam hight on dashboard.
Mine didnt have that

Btw, this Punto is sold, replaced by Mk2b m.y. 2004. 1.2 8V LPG-ed
