Panda (Classic) Chris's 1994 Panda Colour Resto Mod

Introduction

My Slammed Classic Panda

hey, im chris from south wales been lurking on here for a while but now seeing as ive started work on the Panda i though id let you in on it ,The cars a 1994 panda 1000 fire Colour , my grandad bought it from new (my nan chose the colour) , it spend most of its life in a garage although it spent a year in my brother ownership so theres the odd dent , but apart from that , rust is minimal and its got an immaculate interior.
my aim is to do a resto mod as the americans would say, restore the whole car , Standard interior, respray, cleaned bay, lowered suspension and nice, possibly widish wheels, possibility by widening the body, maybe
atm heres how it stood up untill last week , only real issues are that its been off the road for two years ,at the time the front caliper was sticking and the rear beam center bush was knocking its balls off. apart from that its a solid , unwelded , one owner car with 66k on the clock.
Managed to strip the bay this weekend , almost ready to start welding up redundant holes

Also looking at spraying the engine bay a different colour , got two colours in mind , bearing in mind the cars staying the same colour

#1

Or
#2

I'm torn atm as I love both , and they'll both fit in with the "colour" theme

Any preferences?

Comments welcome ,

Re: Chris's 1994 Panda Colour Resto Mod PIC HEAVY

I don't like seeing the engine bay a different colour, only because it makes it look like the rest of the car has had a respray. I'd say if the paint is tidy enough just do your best to clean it up and leave it be :)

Re: Chris's 1994 Panda Colour Resto Mod PIC HEAVY

No I'd keep it the same too, sorry!

You have a problem with such a great colour - anything else you do under the bonnet just won't look as good as the original. Imagine a white car with that purple under the bonnet - gasp - then a purple car with green under the bonnet, bit of a letdown? Like the blue by the way, but only if the whole car was that colour. (y)

leave it stock but if not i would go satin black or white

Given that the Panda is a classic in waiting, keep it body coloured. The resale price of many older classics is hammered if the engine bay has been painted black, looks like it's hiding something.

Nice project you have!

Bit off topic but it really bugs me when people say that pandas are not classics. In what way are they not? They were designed by an automotive genius, loads of people have nostalgic memories of them, and all that aside the design is over 30 years old. Not getting at you personally but just sick of seeing and hearing comments like this.

Sorry if I cause offense, not intended to.

i tend to agree, i'd leave it stock but if not i would go satin black or white - i don't think either of them aqua/blue go with the existing body colour at all myself even though i quite like both of them also.

Well that went down well haha thanks for the comments , not 100% on what I'll do with it yet but it's unlikely to go back purple lol

As for resale value , I'm not worried , it's been in my family from new and it's never leaving ! Haha

It's a classic as far as I'm concerned , mines 20 years old this year I was 4 when my grandad bought it from the dealers lol

No offence taken. I know owners feel a strong affinity to their cars and nobody is sure there is a definition of a "classic car" but I think the Panda is an absolute bargain, the love for them is growing, more and more shows are displaying them but I am still of the view the Panda hasn't made it yet. It's day will come (as I said it's a classic in waiting).

You can't get into the B car park at Goodwood in one (pre 1973), they aren't worth multiples of what they cost new yet, in fact they are still cheaper than new. Compare this to my TR5 I just sold. It was £1,295 new in 1968 and I just sold it for £38,000 with 10 buyers interested in it.

I haven't seen a Panda at a "classic" auction yet but firecolour did take part in the Haslemere classic car run last year. (Image 151 in this folder, the TR5 image 152).

Pandas are still sub £1k territory so more in the Bangernomics division than the classic league at the moment. The fact people are still modding them rather than restoring to original status for concours judges. I am convinced they are on their way though, and a good investment. Imagine what a mint factory condition Sisley could sell for if you found one.

Love and cherished by a wide following? Yes. A true "classic" car? Not quite yet but I'm doing my best to keep another one going in as close to factory condition as I can :D

interesting comments, i must say if i had enough money to buy and mess with (and i hate to use this here) 'proper classics' i would still not just restore them to how they came from factory - i would be fitting modern brakes and suspension and electronic ignition etc etc to stuff. This would annoy so many of the 'purists' its untrue but i don't buy car to be shiny and pretty for people to swoon over but to drive - i don't see that people change them from stock as being a reason for them not being classics, by that theory things like fettled Jag e-types are not classics.

I think its alot harder for people on the whole to accept small cheap cars as classics unless they were a huge hit when they were new - things like mini's and mk1 golfs are accepted classics but stuff from the same era as a mk1 golf that never sold in huge numbers isn't seen by most as a classic.

Another example would be i think alot of people now see and old Renualt 5 GTT as a classic but not an Uno Turbo but get them to try and explain why and you come down to they wanted a 5GTT when they were younger and not an UnoT but they are basically the same thing, small turbo hatch.

I think basically my point is there is no definition of a 'true classic' other than its not a new car lol. To me 30 years + and its a classic and thats the end of it.

An interesting viewpoint, one that is common with the old boys of the classic car scene, for me personally I find it (for lack of a better word) snobby. I have encountered the same sort of thought at a classic car show I attended recently.

For example by your line of thought a 1981 Delorean DMC 12 is a classic and a 1981 panda isn't. Even though they share the same designer. The differentiating factor in your thought which is how much money its worth.

My car was one of 5 cars featured in the article in classic car buyer newspaper on the show I attended. None of the organisers so called specials were included. And that's enough for me.

Well said!
I would happily walk around a classic car show but I can't see myself ever exhibiting a car.
I would be wanting to "beg to differ" with the white haired chap I have a mental image of, sporting a natty moustache and wearing a quilted body warmer, cordurouy trousers and a gallon of Old Spice telling me that my car should have a 2 band push button radio in it.

Go for GOLD baby :slayer:
That's the spirit!!
Anyone know the name of that Skoda green?

Could work.
That green is almost what I want

All the interior panels on the car ( door cards etc ) are green , plus the seat belts are green so it's in keeping with the theme , ideally I want to use a fiat green so it's still along the same lines

Found this online and it's identical to what I was thinking even down to the body colour! and has confirmed its a definite , just need to find the right shade of green now

That's for the comments guys , it's nice to have everyones input (y)

Been busy today getting the wheels stripped back

Got the tyres taken off, they won't be going back on as I'll be getting a lot lower profile.

I'm actually surprised how poor nitro morse is but I'm halfway there!
