Panda (Classic) My Sisley, Panda 4x4 - division north

Introduction

As mentioned before, I'm starting new thread for my recent purchease.
Bought it from forum user, deposit was place without seeing the car first, went all the way down south with rest of the cash and A-frame in boot.

First summary of the car is ( 1 is very poor, 10 is perfect):

  • Originality - 6,
  • Bodywork - 7,
  • Engine - 6,
  • Gearbox - 5,
  • Interior - 5,
  • Structural rust - 8,
  • Visible rust - 8,
  • Previous owners maintain - 7
Plan for the car is to keep it road worthy and in good mechanical nick, join Panda 4x4 UK club and have some play with other Northern forum members.

As it is now, I'm not willing to make any statement what needs to be done as I had only spend about 2h last week by checking and looking at the car in more details way.

That is my bigger worry for now - bloody milky coolant and a bit of mayo under the oil cap.

How can I confirm my head gasket theory not having coolant presure test kit???
@CLS - your not the only one - aparently it is bloody hard to buy cheepo 4x4 without blown thru head gasket.

The rest of the engine bay seems to be fine,

Did somebody in here mentioned a black silicone gunk as a fast repair?

Not the geniune steering wheel and speedo, which does not make much difference to me at all. Roofrack presence evidence

Dear FFCP section members, any comments, suggestions and observation are more than welcome, especcialy regards the 4x4 drive train i.e. leaks etc.
Depending on how long she's been stood about it could just be condensation build up causing the froth on your oil cap.

Check your head bolts for filler. ;)

Well done (y)

The rusty stuff in the header tank is fairly normal if the coolant hasn't been changed or it's been stood. As said before the stuff inside the oil cap can be moisture from lack of use - several of mine have been like that with no head problems so fingers crossed.

I'm confused by your scoring system - is 8/10 for rust and visible rust good or bad? If 10/10 is the most rust you can get (dust!) then good luck with the weldathon!! :D

You have intact door bottoms so on my scale of being a "proper" ex-farm 4x4 it's a severrrrn! from me (y)

I will use your pictures as a guide to compare mine with :)

Hopefully us northern panda 4x4 types can get off road soon - even if we all have to squeeze into andypanda4x4's to do it!

Nice buy.

I can confirm now, there is no head gasket failure sympthons or points which would indicate that. I took torch with me today, when the reservoir was illuminated from the bottom - pure red coolant inside without any oil contamination, the rusty residue at the bottom walls of the tank does give that bad apperiance.

Parts which were replaced recently:
- rear exhaust box,
- centre pipe,
- clutch cable,
- water pump and the timming belt,
- oil filer, air filter,
- rear or front screen washer pump,
- radiator,
- spark plugs,
- o/s outer cv joint boot,

Now rocker cover is off, as bad black silicone gasket repair was pissing oil at the front and rear of the cylinder head, had some smoke of the exhaust manifold already.
Vacumm advance hose was pluged with M5 bolt, timming was set just over 5* BTDC, new vacumm unit fited, earth point inside dizzy cleaned and treated with electric conductive silicone - timming adjusted to 2* BTDC and the engine start to run much smoother. Will try to get rocker cover gasket from local motor factors tommorow, hope at least one of them does have the stock.

The doors were gone at the bottom, includining the frame - now they seems to be re -skined with alluminium panels, bottoms of outer sills were done on some point as well but luckly for me they did use proper replacement panels not flat tin sheets.

Beautiful door bottoms!

Steering wheel and clocks are right for the year, head gasket looks to be fine too.

I'd drive it about as much as you can, enjoy it, relax, and fix stuff when it breaks.

Welcome to the Northern 4x4 Chapter. You have friends here.

It's a Sisley..so clocks and steering wheel aren't right...;) headlining is right though. Always liked that mottled look.

The are for this one, its one of the limited 500 run.

Its a Mk2 Sisley, you can tell by the grey interior and the Mk1s were only D and E reg, so it should have the Sisley clocks and wheel.

Its one of the origional 500, so doesn't have sisley interior like the seatbelts like the later uncapped production volumn ones.

IIRC is is correct in not having Sisley clocks also. Seats are correct for the first 500 limited run also.

Not even aware of them doing mk1 Sisleys. My mk2 Sisley was a 'E' plate and was as this one is. :)

It's too late to be one of the first 500 surely? Mine is also an F reg but well into the later versions.

The seats are the wrong colour for an original one unless some were different - I thought they were all the yellowy colour (like Vern's parked on my drive) - the seats & dash roll are both later Sisley (like mine down with Vern) unless someone wants to shoot me down.............

I think it's a later one with a different speedo and horn push. (y)
