Seicento Seicento Sporting MS in faded red :)

Introduction

Seicento Sporting Michael Schumacher in faded red :)

Just picked up one of these for a 70 mile a day commute and so far, great fun.

It's a 2001 Y reg, 80k miles, full service history, new rad, alternator, battery, handbrake cables, clutch and clutch cable and exhaust were done by the previous owner.

So far ( 20 miles in ) i've fixed the following ...

Seized cooling fan and a blown fuse, WD40 on fan bearings and a new fuse fixed that.

Leaking sunroof - removed all the bolts and siliconed up the rubber washers, new gaskets made from bike inner tube and silicon greased the seal. No more leaks.

Things i might fix ...

Both fog lights are not working, one definitely due to water through a cracked lens and the other .... probably got bored years ago.

Clunking from the steering, presume / assume it's either track rod ends or balljoints / arb bushes.

Paint - it's a faded sorry state, good enough condition, just looks like FIAT forgot to put suntan lotion in the original paint :)

The only thing i'm stuck with now are what tyres to get, have seen you can get Pirelli P6000 175 50 R15 or 165 60 R14 in more choices, am inclined to go for the higher profile as it's cheaper and will probably dent the mpg less. I take it there are no issues with using a 165 60 R14 tyre on that wheel? Miata tyre calculator reckons it's within tolerance

175/50-14 3.4in 10.4in 20.9in 65.6in 965 0.0%
165/60-14 3.9in 10.9in 21.8in 68.5in 925 4.3%

Bit more searching reckons 185 50 R14 will fit - Maxxis do their MA Z1 in that size and that'll do fine. Will get 4 of those ordered and fitted next month - i'll play with what's left of the P6000s for now
I'm aware this won't sharpen the handling but that's fine.

Since everyone on forums likes pics, here's a few of it, nicknamed it 'Shooey' which seems entirely apt. Outside is faded in many places, once i get some time i'll buzz the DA over it and give it a few coats of decent wax but i suspect the paint has faded beyond help. It is utterly manky inside but now the leaking roof is fixed ( and its no longer carrying a dog around) i'll get in there with an aquavac and make it a lot nicer :)

you just need the bluetooth elm327 OBDII thing that unclefester posted up a few posts, and then an app on the phone. Just go on the mrs' phone and open the android market and search for 'dashcommand', i had a look on their site and they do the app on android as well as iOS.

Effing typical, I've got a Blackberry. I like to think of them as the Saab of the phone world.

Also greased ALL the seals, removed the door rubbers and cleaned and greased them, removed the rear windows and cleaned all the channels and seals out and then greased them and also the TB rubber doughnut gasket.

PlusGassed the ARB bolts too - preparation for a job that's yet to come.

Next thing will be to give the thing a damned good aquavac and deep clean but that's for tomorrow i think :)

Found that grommet - the one the bonnet release cable goes through, poked a coathanger through with the cable taped to it and through it came - easy as you like and no need to go poking new holes through things.

Anyway, that's my 8" sub working, all bass taken off the dash speakers and it all sounds much better :) Ache in places i'd forgotten i had .... it's been a while since i've installed into a space that cramped!

However that seems to make little difference to what you can see in the dark when it's hosing down.

Cleaned the screen when i got to work and that seems to be most of the problem however, the headlights really aren't very good at burning through bad weather are they :( Anything more than 40mph on unlit backroads is running on a wing and a prayer.

Half tempted to get a light bar bolted to the front bumper and deal with it the easy way.

The dipped and main should be excellent think you could clean internally carefully there is a refurb guide.

The OEM fogs are worse than the dipped in fog I replaced one when I got my auto the other was clearly new but even new ones were worse than dipped. So I removed them and told broker.

They are nice bling though.

Ta for that - they look pretty easy to remove from the car so it looks that'll be on the list of things to do - they look pretty dusty in there.

Does the mirror deteriorate over time or is it just surface dust / moisture marks etc and dirt on the inside of the glass?

Picked a set of seats up for a good price off a nice man, they needed a bit of a clean but that's all. Will get them swapped over this week and then i can remove the set that's in the car, clean them up and sell them on. Exactly the same colour as these just with a couple of small fag burns on the drivers seat.

Much easier to clean stuff out of the car!

Done :)

Removed all the seats again, cleaned all the carpets, headlining, scrubbed all the plastics. The bolts that hold the rear seat brackets in were a bastard to remove, had to partially undo them and then hit them with PlusGas to break the rust seal in the threads.

Collected 1.5 pints of silt from the aqua vac :D So much nicer sitting in a car that doesn't stink!!!

Also cleaned the old seats ready for collection tomorrow and done my partners Jazz seats and mats too. On a cleaning roll today so done the house carpets too - reminded now that i'm not 20 anymore cos i ache all over

And so i join the failing HG club (n)

Noticed the last few mornings / evenings when started from cold there's a slight hesitation for the first few seconds which then clears once i've revved the engine. Looks, feels and sounds like the early stages of the HG going. It's not using water as far as i can tell or if it is, not much and there's no oil in the water and no cheese in the oil filler cap. Going to go and get it compression tested / sniff tested on Friday but i'm resigned to the fact it just needs doing and in all honesty has probably been contributing to the general running issues.

Given the price of cat /lambda sensors etc there seems little point in dragging the issue out if that's what it is. On the plus side .... can get it done for under £200 inc water pump so that's fair enough and they've said they'll fit the rocker gasket i've bought at the same time.

What's the general rule with this - driving it is ok like this as long as you keep an eye on water temperature or is it best to just stop using it until it's fixed?

if you must drive it with a blowing HG (not really advisable), once its warmed up a tad heaters and blowers on full, no sitting stationary with engine on, if you get in traffic pull off road and turn it off and allow traffic to clear.

Compression test asap, its not a big deal to repair but you pay the labour charges as it takes a while. Its only £40 odd quid in parts.

If its gone the head will need skimming or it will go again soon.

Ta - i'll drive it gently home this evening and then give it to the garage. I did check on the parts - not expensive and if i had the time ( and it was still summer) i'd have a crack at doing it myself but it just seems easier to give it to someone and let them take care of it.

It's not overheating yet - the gauges tell me that much.

Hopefully ( :D ) this is the last of the big things and it will just be the odd thing like brakes / bushes / bearings all of which i can do happily myself.
