Panda (Classic) Project Fallout

Introduction

let me introduce to you, the free panda 4x4 which was first spotted >>Here<<.
First off however, here is the plan:

i will (some how) make the panda look "Post Apocalyptic" yet keep it in a road legal state (so no spikes, sharp rusty edges sadly). We have all seen mad max right? all wanted to replicate a mad max style car?
well let me be the first to attempt this with a fiat panda 4x4.

if anyone here has seen the TV program "Defiance", you surely have seen the epic Doge Charger that looks post apocalyptic. i will be trying to aim for the same theme. with such things as an external roll cadge, external metal mesh / grills covering the windows, custom bull bar, reinforced rear bumper made from tubular metal, custom twin output exhaust, and many many more.

this project is going to be undertaken as cheaply as possible (excluding parts necessary for a safe road going vehicle). reusing as many things as i can find (in scrap yards, freebees), true to a real post apocalyptic constructed vehicle. i will also be taking the "rough is best look" (please note, i say Rough not Rat!) the panda its self of course will undergo all the rust prevention Talon went under when i got him.

anyway, i will leave you a few seconds to build up a mental picture of how a panda 4x4 could look in a post apocalyptic landscape while browsing some of these Pictures.......

ok.. that should do.

First off. i need to get the panda all well and good.
a few things are broken... the exhaust, the front suspension on the passenger side, both rear dampeners are rusted out, the doors are shot but i will try to fix them, the gear stick is really loose and all the roller bearings have dropped out, the wiring is a mess (mice attack!), there are no brakes.. and i mean no brakes, and lets not forget the underside rust.

so today i started by stripping out everything inside the car to get a good look at the floor pan and clean it all out (Dragon Man style!) i found the usual rust: the boot floor is a mess, but easy fixable, a seam has gone just behind the drivers seat anything forward of that seems to be OK, and the back of the sills are just gone so i will need to rebuild that.

the engine runs.. the vac advance line has split so its a bit rough on tickover but it seems good. the fuel tank seems good.. all the 4x4 stuff seems good.

i have go a few pictures took free by a professional photographer! (or should i say someone with an epic camera :p)

Here are a few picture, but please check out >This Album<

like i say, check out the photo album.

i will be keeping >Online video logs< of this, so keep a look out on Youtube too.
here are some videos, both are long but the second one is longer!

keep watching guys.. the jet wash will be coming out later today!

Edit:

This is how it looks now: :eek::eek: :slayer::slayer::slayer:

i need to get the essentials first.. would not mind getting myself a halfords advanced tool set for work (the big one), could do with a new laptop as mine is more like a keyboard with built in computer now really! see the picture!.. (i really like the look of the Lenovo Y50-70), could do with a replacement phone but i can live with cracked screen for now.. and i guess there's other stuff but for now they are at the top of my list

the car does not really need anything. it all "works".

it appears to work...

if you remember Talons original prop shaft vibrated badly around 40mph...

well today i managed to make some bolts by filing down some i got from work and bolted Talons original now balanced prop shaft to the bottom of the Fallout panda.

i took it for a small test drive and i am happy to say it has no vibrations but the max speed i tested it at was 40mph. it may vibrate at higher speeds..... time will tell.

now project fallout is a true 4x4 once again!

i am also running fallout for free on fuel i get out of scrap cars too.. oh and about my job..
guys... i cant tell you how much i am loving it!

best. job. ever.

Yep, pretty local to me, his kid have layed-up Sisley which was for sale few years back but did not sell as he was expecting unrealistic money for such a rot box.

Guilty! :)

I bought a BX because I thought the 309 wasn't long for this world, turns out it was fine and now the BX is knackered. We have five cars between us and at one stage last week we were down to one (W123 got sideswiped, Panda was having replacement fuel tank fitted, BX was refusing to rise, Mustang is always broken). Ah the joys of old cars...

ahh well maybe time for an update.

Fallout is going well.. however after not being on the road since like 1997 theres been a few hiccups.

the engine is fine(for now).. thats the good news. the bad news was that today the gear linkage snapped on the pivot thingy on the side of the gearbox... sigh.
thankfully i had a spare gearbox, so the one from that has gone on fallout, not after being took apart and greased up though. also swapped the bushes around too just to get even ware. they still looked new!

anyway it all works good now.. for the next few hours of use though i will have a very stiff forwards and backwards motion on the gear stick. i had this with Talon when i did the same to him.. it went normal after a week or so.

and another issue has come up. radiator fan not coming on.
now today i was in traffic and looked down.. saw the temperature of the engine at about 120.c.. just touching the red.. damn.. no fan on.. wtf.. so instantly stuck my heaters on with the fan on full. i didnt turn the engine off as i have read that doing so warps the head gasket leading to failure. sure enough though the temperature went down and when it got to about the 100.c i revved the engine slightly off idle to get the water pump spinning.. after i did so the fan came on.

sounds like lazy water pump to me... the bitch is, i changed the pump, belt(s) and tension bearing at the same time.

i really wish radiator fans worked from the engines temperature rather than the radiators temperature.. or took a reading from both. that would work so much better.

i will have to look into it.. for now i have not done anything. i did find out that the radiator fan gets a constant live and is switched by the earth.. i was planning on putting a relay on it in line with the radiator fan switch so i could manually turn it on from inside the car.. maybe even get my own electronic thermostat, and make it read from the temperature gauge's sensor (which is mounted to the back of the cylinder head).

ill just keep my eye on i for now.. now i know of its antics ill know to keep the engine off when in traffic!

hmm well its been a while in here and its time for Fallouts MOT, so place your bets on what its going to fail on.

as a side note i have tightened up the hand brake as that was pointing at the roof, which has also made less travel in the brake pedal which is nice.

took the barrels off the roof for now, the ratchet straps were frayed which i knew about but they one day just let go almost lucky i caught them when i did.

fallout is pretty much going in for MOT as is. we will see how it goes.

i have done a video but i need to render it.. stay tuned i hope to do it while im at work.
