About time really

Well, having been a member since 2008, I should probably put a few bits up about my Punto.

Bought with a laundry list of problems, and feeling sorry for the old beast, I've spent a lot of hours and probably too much cash:
  • Fitting a new clutch and slave cylinder (the reason I got the car to start with).
  • Changing the rusty bonnet, damaged front bumper, O/S/F wing and drivers' door.
  • Replacing the ECU (somehow lost the code).
  • Visiting Brighton, to pick up a set of 15 inch Bravo Abarth Speedlines.
  • Replacing the Ansa backbox and snapped exhaust centre section with a Sportex cat-back system.
  • Swapping the standard steering wheel for a Sparco one when the airbag light came on.
  • Fitting replacement dashboard bulbs and Lockwood white dials.
  • 2 cheapo head units (current one from Aldi, featuring CD, MP3, USB, Bluetooth and a remote!)
  • Exhaust downpipe/flexi and lambda section.
  • A couple of O/S headlamps
  • A bargain genuine radiator.
Plus a whole load of odds and ends I can't remember.
Enough chatter, pics:

From Brooklands 2012:

And a day I felt rather proud:

Hopefully, there'll be more to come.

The reason I went in Dad's Cinq to Brooklands:

From Stanford, (Apologies to @Panda CLX for taking the Mk1 spot in the 20 Years Of The Punto display, I did ask whether I should move as soon as I saw you arrive.):

Re: About time really

That's the best colour, 2dr, for a mk.1, like my late lamented ELX75 - made it to 172k.

Re: About time really

Indecision strikes!
  • Do I fit the 'Focus' induction kit that's been in a box for God knows how long, or clean up the airbox and paint the lettering? It's MPI, so it'll be a little different.
  • Should I replace the black B pillar vinyl, put up with the marks on the door from the old stuff, or try carbon-look vinyl?

Re: About time really

Cleaning up the old airbox and giving it a spruce up with some paint will help hide the rather small engine.. Depends what sort of noise you're looking for and the Focus kit will give you a little more grunt, I'm sure a decent panel filter will add some roar though and a tidy OEM bay will help you stand out at shows.

As for the B-pillars its a shame that they always seem to crack and peel, as you don't have tinted windows it probably wouldn't look to bad if you peeled if off and spend some time and elbow grease cleaning it up.

Nice work so far, have you sorted the little hole on the bonnet yet?

Re: About time really

Update (kinda):

A set of leather gear lever and handbrake gaiters have arrived from the Bay (black with blue stitching.

Plus, following a trip to the local breakers last week, I have another parcel shelf. It just needs a small repair to one corner.

Pics will come when they're done.

Re: About time really

Holy thread resurrection Batman! It's an update:

The parcel shelf and interior gaiters have been put on hold, as there's been a couple of other bits I wanted to sort.

1st up was new spark plugs and leads. The plugs had only been changed once in t the time I've owned the car, and who knows how old the leads were. The only reason I pulled my finger out was an occasional misfire (only once or twice).

Decided to get some Magnecor leads to go with the NGK plugs. Sorry, no under bonnet pics, as I quickly fitted them at work.

However, I do have this:

Thanks Carol!

2nd was a bizzare bit of damage to the interior light.

Deciding to replace the old air freshener (which was tucked up between the rear view mirror and light, revealed it to be somehow stuck to it.

Once I'd pulled it apart, this was left:

So, a replacement came from the bay, and swapped along with a blue LED bulb (yes, I know I'm a chav ).

Next issues are the noisy wiper motor (annoyed, as I fitted a new one a couple of years ago) and new suspension. The current front dampers have leaked dramatically, so I'm deciding what to replace them with.

Ta ta for now!

Re: About time really

Right! it's broken!

If seems like the misfire's back with a vengeance, as the car started running rough(misfire?) then cutting out.

Previously when it started to run funny, turning it off too cool got it as it should.

Re: About time really

Apologies ladies & gents, I actually nodded off whilst posting that.

Here's a little backstory on my mechanical maladies:
  • On the way back from Stanford last year, the engine started running rough. Having parked up to let it cool, everything was fine for months.
  • Easter Monday, more rough running on the way home. This time, from Thruxton in the pouring rain. Following this, I replaced the plugs and leads.
  • Bank holiday Monday, in the rain, coming home from Crystal Palace: That familiar fault reappears. This time, the engine cuts out all together.
So following a tow to my Nan's, and replacing both coil packs, the car will start and run badly for a few seconds before cutting out.

Any suggestions?

In other news, I've discovered why the wiper motor's noisy: It's been underwater (make sure your scuttle drain holes are clear folks!)
