Panda (Classic) Bo the Selecta.

Introduction

For the story so far please see this thread.................

https://www.fiatforum.com/auction-watch/320653-my-selecta.html

This is VmanC really, although Barbara (Panda Mo) may contribute now and again as it's her car. :)

So, Gavin and I bought this from Aston Martin just before, out of desperation, he did something silly with it. I told Barbara that Gavin and I had bought some spares between us, Gavin having some roof bars and me an auto gearbox for my green Selecta, I did not mention that they were connected to a complete car.

It could well have been that this Selecta would be stripped for what it could provide for other Pandas, that was my plan had it turned out to be a basket case. Fortunately the positives far outweighed the negatives so I was very pleased that my hopes for this car were confirmed once I'd looked it over and driven it. :)

It does have a number of issues that need sorting but basically it has very little rust and drives well.

Barbara needs a higher than standard driving position, being short in the body, so the Alfa 147 seats that are currently in Oslo will be transferd into Bo. The height adjuster on the drivers seat will allow Barbara to find a comfortable driving position whilst allowing me to drive it without the top of my head being pressed against the roof lining.

Other than some nice wheels I would think that the rest of Bo will remain standard but improved. Here are some pics of how he is now........

the local yard back up in Yorkshire has fixed pricing - makes some things cheap but others expensive. £50 for a pair of normal seats seems steep but when you find a pair of front alfa seats in a new alfa in red leather £50 seems uber cheap - needless to say you gotta be quick to get them lol.

Looks top Vern, i find myself looking at panda threads again... i want one!! lol

what can i say - i've had planty of cento's. Feel its time for a change but i want a small fiat still. I want a panda, the mrs says we should get a 126 (which i do love tbh).

I'm just trying to figure out some stuff regarding gearboxes and whats useable - but i will keep searching and reading for now rather than clutter peoples threads (not that most threads i read here don't go wildly off topic lol)

Funnily enough the Guy I bought the seats from today had them for sale because he'd bought a red set. He was looking for a red chesterfield settee and spotted them wrongly listed in the household furniture section. He was the only bidder with a start price of £80. :p

Well, as the pic above shows, Barbara and Bo made it to the NEC last weekend to join the other Pandas that made it there the easy way. Bo also managed to transport Barbara home again on the Monday, and to a hospital appointment later in the afternoon.

Once he got to the hospital entrance however, like a wounded horse collapsing after carrying his rider to safety, Bo collapsed.

Amazingly there was an empty parking space (yes, in a hospital car park!) that some kind person was able to help push him into. The AA were called but nothing could be done, and so it was that a fourth Panda arrived at HQ that day on the back of a lorry.

Symptoms are that it stalls as soon as any gear is engaged so I think the problem is clutch related. Now it could be that it's being constantly energised because of a faulty sensor/switch, or components in the clutch assembly have seized/jammed together. I have already swapped the gear lever contact assembly for a spare but this made no difference. Further electrical testing will have to wait a while, and if that doesn't find the problem a gearbox strip down is on the cards.

I really would like to keep this as an auto so will do all I can to ensure that happens, a manual conversion would be the penultimate option, before breaking for spares.

I hope it's easy to sort... -- I know just how much Mo likes driving Bo...! :D

If you need any bits from Hal, for temporary fettling, or experimentation, I am more than happy for you to borrow them. I also have a brand new "automatic gearbox vessel sensor", somewhere (possibly in Betty's boot...) -- although am not at all sure what this does.

There's also this clutch, for sale on eBay. It's from a Micra, though -- so not so sure if it's directly compatible. Most Easterly Pandas...?

:( Fingers crossed it's something simple to fix.

It really does sound like the Uno's problem too. That stalls with a huge bang as the clutch goes in when cold & tries to stall (or at least knocks the engine revs down) even when warm (without the bang!). Coming up to junctions you can feel it dragging too, like the clutch isn't fully disengaging. Fingers firmly crossed, but it doesn't seem to be getting worse so far - I do suspect it will be heading your way with the same issue at some point Vernon, so all this practice may come in useful!!

It's odd how all (or at least lots) of these similar age Selecta's are having trouble suddenly.

That's very kind of you Stephen but I will try to leave Hal intact, even if for no other reason than I'm not sure that I could put him back together again at this stage.

Have put the clutch on my saved list (y) If I do need one and it looks the same I think I'll go for it, although it will probably be sold by the time I get that far.

Hi Vern.

I take it you've started with the obvious and disconnected both accelerator pedal micro switches to see if the issue still happens

Does it do it in both drive and reverse

Hi Jon,

Yep stalls as soon as I select drive or reverse.

Only swapped the switch unit so far. My next step was going be checking if the feed to the clutch was there all the time, if it was then yes the micro switches would be suspects. (y)
