Tipo (Classic) 1992 Tipo 1.7D

Introduction

Just posting a few pics of my Tipo diesel project, I bought it 12 months ago, its a slow burner as a baby in the house means little free time! I had many Tipos years ago but moved away from fiats. Its a bit of a shed sadly but it was heading to the crusher if I did not buy it. Everything is worn out, the only redeeming feature is the engine and gearbox are good. I have a stockpile of parts built up but need more, I shudder when I think of all the good parts I binned over the years as I thought I would never have a Tipo again! The seats are in very poor shape so not sure what I will do with those. At the moment all the front suspension is removed bar the front subframe which is next on the list for removal. More pics to follow.
iv personally always had a soft spot for the tipo, always loved something about it. what are your plans for this? are you taking it apart or are you going to try and rescue it?

The plan is to save it and get it roadworthy but it needs everything renewed from the interior to the rotten steel brake pipes, It won't be spotless but will be useable. Time and money are the only things to slow me down!

More pics, lots of work to do!

Hey Stephen, looks like you've got a bit of rust to sort out but a sound project anyway... I've just tidied up the crumbling box sections behind the front bumper on mine! - they were actually still there though, unlike yours...

You should checkout some threads from m20B25 on the forum - he's a fearless young Irish mechanic who has done just about everything to Bravas and has a grey Tempra that he keeps threatening to return to the road! If you need support or inspiration you could turn to him!

Good luck.

It makes me really sad to see pics like those, but very happy that I moved to SE Spain over 23 years ago.
My 91-2 Tipo is totally rust free.

There is a drawback to living here if you're young and carefree, hardly any modifications are allowed without stringent checks, lots of paperwork and a hefty price tag.

Thankfully most of the pictured rust is not structural. I don't mind getting busy with the wire brush or sandblaster and keeping the welding to a minimum! I always laugh when I see the rear window sticker in my tipo proudly proclaiming its 8 year galvanised steel warranty! But it is depressing alright to think of the tipos pottering around the med with no rust whatsoever. Your lucky SFB!

More pics of my tipo! first one always makes me laugh! The next two don't though and prove that maybe the galvanising was not quite what fiat thought it was.. I really need a good passenger side rear door but can't find one here in Ireland..yet. To be fair to the car this is the only really bad spot of rust on the exterior panels.

Well I know of a couple of 1992 mk2 and mk3 vw golfs over here with no corrosion issues, so I would still be disappointed about my tipo rusting as I remember fiat making a big deal about the galvanised steel at the time!! Then again if it had been minded maybe it would not have rusted. the rest of the exterior is rust free except for that door..

in Tipo 1.7 Diesel parts are the highest quality and identical to other original parts

Well I finally succeeded in finding a tipo for parts after placing a wanted ad on a site here in Ireland. Despite being last used as a hen house (actually true!) this car will yield loads of good bits, good lamps, bumpers, mirrors, seats not torn, In fact I'm in a real bind as the bodyshell is way better than my 1.7D so not sure what to do. the parts car was a 1.4 which has the engine removed by the guy I bought it from, he races punto's. Alas the rear door I wanted is as bad as my own tipo, unbelievable! The panels are fairly knocked about too as the guy I bought it from only wanted the engine so had been dragging the car around with a forklift, and someone decided to perform riverdance on the roof which is pretty lumpy after that. I will let the pictures talk now.

Oh dear.. very severe rust in the front bumper supports on my 1.7D project.. whats left of them! mostly stripping at the moment when I have time. The car is 40 miles away from where I am living so opportunities can be limited for working on it. On the plus side I changed the rocker cover gasket, glowplugs and the tailgate gas springs, removed the complete handbrake lever setup from the car and cleaned the gear gaiter and centre console. I'm also trying to remove whats left of the steel water pipe from the water pump that runs along the back of the engine, not the easiest job in the world.

Glad to see you're making progress and plans are taking shape. If you've got to get the door welded properly the so be it I guess, at least you should have a tidy interior and everything else stratightforward apart from derusting and painting and replacing.

Waiting for the verdict on this year's MOT for mine - fingers crossed! Will report...

Thanks for the support Bluejohn, I hope yours gets through the MOT ok! I would say my progress is very gradual, lord knows when I will get mine through a test! All I am getting done are bits and pieces at the moment. Every time I look at it I keep seeing more worn out components, all the engine and gearbox mounts are shot.. Plenty to do and least its avoided the crusher!

Well today I decided to remove the front subframe seeing as I had the front of the car jacked up and on stands anyway. Its not too bad rust wise, and the anti roll bar looks pretty ok too. I might get it sandblasted and repaint it if I can find some spare cash! the rear engine/gearbox mounting rubber is completely shot along with the other 2 mountings as well, hopefully I can find replacements. How on earth is one supposed to make up a new brake pipe to replace the one pictured? (its the driver side front) there are more bends than a twisty road! As usual I will let the pictures talk.

No real constructive work to report on this project, I dropped out the engine and gearbox having previously removed the front subframe. I thought it was the easiest way to change the engine/gearbox mounts and to remove the steel brake pipes for replacement with lovely new copper pipes. While I'm in here I will treat any rust and paint up the bay to prevent further rust. I will also do the timing belt, clutch and water pump while I have the engine removed, the water pump looks quite new but I will stick in a new one anyway. Progress is slow as I only get at this car every few weeks. I might also add that the tipp-ex marks on the timing belt sprockets were not put there by me!
