My power steering light has started to light up a few times recently (losing power steering) this is corrected by me turning off the ignition and restarting the car, cold this mean a lose connection or is my power steering motor on its way out? If so how much am I looking for and can the motor be just changed without involving the ECU

How old is the current battery?
Have you cleaned the earthing up on the engine bay etc?

I believe you can change just the motor but the codes have to match the ecu's, never having done a swap - i cant tell

I experience simular issues with my steering, had Fiat diagnose and was told it was the torsion sensor in the electric steering, I was quoted £750 for parts and £150 to fit them. I bought a second hand unit from a wrecker and fitted it my self (medium difficult job) fixed for less then £150.

I had to fix my Power Steering sometime last year, it'd work then cut out on full lock or just randomly cut out while driving on a straight road... Which is horrid so I went to a scrappy and brought a second hand motor and fitted it and the problem went away, and to even this day I've not had one Power Steering issue! So if I was you do the same, it's relatively easy to do :)

Generally speaking if it only happens at full lock, parking, reversing or soon after start it suggests battery. If it happens randomly in a straight line or with light loads applied it suggests motor, torque sensors etc.

you look to have a burnt orange punti of about x reg?
its the law at this age the motor packs up:D
just be aware that another motor from a scrapyard might also be duff and is the reason the car was scrapped:)
