Punto (Mk2/2b) Madd Black 54 Punto Active Sport 1.2 8V 3dr Project

Introduction

Hi there, I thought it was about time I joined here as I keep checking out the guides and checking out your cars for ideas :D I am 27 and my Punto is my first car, I know I'm a little late learning to drive and all, but I lived in Singapore where you can't drive till 21 and I'm now back in Scotland and I decided to wait till I was past 25 and the insurance started to drop ;)

So what I've done so far:
(I have little money so I will add prices for others wanting to DIY on the cheap ;))

- Ford Focus Induction Kit (£25) 60mins or so to fit
- Chromed the dash (£1 silver paint) 50mins. to take out mainly
- Replaced the Mirrors with black DMT ones (£15 from Bodykit.ltd) 6hrs+ horror to fit, Punto mounting plates provided didn't fit so had to cut/shape to fit
- Debadged Grill (£32 from eBay) 30mins to fit
- DRL strip of LEDs (£12 eBay) 4hrs to fit for wiring and the LED strip didn't stick well so used cable ties to make sure they can't come off.
- Chrome Window washer Jets with white LED (£5 eBay) 15mins as wiring already in place from DRL strip.
- Sport Tyres (H type) (£42 for front 2 on eBay) Got them fitted
- Mutant Bluetooth USB/Aux car stereo (£30 eBay) 6hrs+ to fit as I didn't have the right cables/adapter kit
- Front Speakers (Work in Progress)
- Fiat 100W Subwoofer (Work in Progress)

Plans:
- Rear Speakers
- Alloys

I've take a few pictures on my phone a few minutes ago, so quality isn't super, but more and better ones to follow.
As you can see in the picture of the Stereo there is a switch on the left, this is to switch off the Stereo as I didn't want to go through the trouble of wiring it all to ignition/cigarette lighter. So this is an easy way to stop the battery running dry ;)
There will also be a matching switch on the right over the next few days witch will allow the DRLs+washer jet LEDs to be switched on and off (I only put the DRLs in yesterday :D)

When you say Sport tyres H type

Do you mean you've got some H rated tyres?

As the punto has 3 speed ratings for the punto depending on steelies / alloys

T for steelies (upto 118mph) Thats okay the 8v clicks out at 96mph anyway
H for 14" alloys (130Mph) Overkill but there we go
The 15" sporting alloys are a V = 149mph

Tbh i best get my flux capacitors charged if i ever reach that speed

Hence why i swapped to steelies as the specification is set for 1.2 8v is the above which i've got :)

Can i ask what you used to highlight the 30 / 50 / 70mph markers please?
as the mk2b's dash is awful for not really knowing where 30mph is - i spend more time working it out then doing it....

Haha that brings back memories. Nice car, reminds me of my old one.

Not sure sure about the DRLs personally as I don't think they go with the lines on the car.

Don't waste your breath on the stock subwoofer, its not that great. You'd be better off putting time into getting a small after market job in the boot or under the seat. :)

Hey Ziggy,

By H type tyres I meant they are the 15" tyres.....192/55 H or something like that... I read that H meant Sport somewhere in the forum, so was excited when I found them cheap on eBay, as I went to KwikF. to ask to get 2 new front tyres fitted as the ones on it I got when bought were worn but they quoted £120 (n)

I used a little pin point of 'fluorescent' bright red paint that I dropped between the 28/30 and 48/50, 68/70. Works so well! I did it 2 days after I had the car and was still learning to drive as I hated I couldn't see when I was doing 30 or 50 in towns (I was very speed-camera aware ;) )

The Speed Rating is a letter to indicate what the manufacture say the tyre will handle going at that speed

H and V are seriosuly over-rated for the 8v's but its better then not having the correct speed tyres - one blowing out and killing somebody

The red Paint - might have to get something myself, as again a few camera on my route to work - its very hard to tell esp when i first got my mk2b as the rev counter and speedo are the otherway around compared to the mk2

DRL's i dont like personally either - i like the idea of a nice flat RING automative style

I wouldnt mind adding some to the rear of mine too!

i dont want to put a downer on your car but all that green spaghetti under your bonnet is a recipe for a fire
i honestly cant believe people still do stuff like this
wire it properly trunk it and for goodnes sake get an inline fuse on the thing

little tip

if it goes off with a puff:eek: insurer will make your life hell not to pay out, trust me here

S+B is true there
Spend £10 on some Fuse holders and save £1000's

You could always play it extra safe - Double fuse if you running the distance of the car
Ie Engine bay to boot

So if the wire chafe's and shorts - the engine bay fuse will blow - the rear fuse wont
you know there is a problem with wiring

Also OP
can you post a picture of the dash markings at night with the lights on? i wanna see if its visible or not

Ziggy

SandB: The 'Spaghetti' wire as you call it is just temporary, I only installed the DRLs on Sunday and I didn't have the time to hide and tape up all the wire. The fuses is a good idea, I'm planning to put in 2x just to be safe. ;) Gonna see about getting the wires hidden under the rubber seals or get black wire so it is less visible.

the DRLs: you either hate or like! I liking them more and more on the car. I really put them on as you see so many people driving around with the parking lights on which is just silly as they do nothing for visual awareness. I live in the country and drive through a lot of forests with single tracks where people walk along. So I got the DRLs to make myself more visible and so I don't have to put on the silly parking lights when it isn't really dark enough to put on full lights (being LEDs they are more energy saving too) And of course I thought it would look cool :D (I have been getting a lot of head-turns!(y))
Ziggy, I'll get a shot of the Speedo tomorrow at night time for ya mate!

So far I've not told my insurance about any of the MODs done. Should I? I was hoping to keep the MODs within the legal limits as such. So I'm staying away from engine mods, exhaust box, Tinted windows and stuff that really does impact insurance.

DRLs are exterior enhancements so that are easilly removed so should have nothing to do with insurance, right?

Im with churchill who deem no Modifications to any1 under 25yo
But they'll allow me for FREE (yes FREE!) to add daytime running lights to my car!
SWEEET!!

Remember DRL's are meant to switch or dim with Side/head lights
And the light units MUST be 'E' marked, otherwise they could be issues

And i look forward to seeing a picture mate, im really tempted todo the same thing if the pictures look good enough

Hey Guys Sorry, I've tried taking a few pictures, but my camera doesn't really agree with the lighting of the dashboard so it is a lot of orange fuzziness.
I've just used some very basic Red Acrylic Paint for the dots on the 30/50 markers. During the day they are really nice and red and make it ace to see the speed. During the night the Orange back light of the dash makes the Black areas between white lines of the speedos glow a bit lighter, and as I've painted on the black area not any of the white the Red dots just become really dark black (much blacker then rest of dash as the rest of the Dash is a Black-Orange glow). So the Dots between 30/50/70 become really dark black and do stand out enough to make out you are doing 30/50/70. It may be worth experimenting with Fluorescent Paint as that would Glow in the dark or simply a small 'glow in the Dark' sticker/dot in the areas, or maybe to glue a small patch of some thin semi-translucent Acrylic Plastic on the white marks of the 30/50/70 and see if that will glow in the colour when dash back-lighting is turned on. I might test the glow in the dark paint if I can get my hands on some. It does work alright to be honest with the dark black areas on the dash at moment, they are just clear enough to make out compared to certainly nothing there before :p

I've attached a picture I took on my phone while driving and you just about make out the black areas I was saying. I'll try and make one tonight parked on my phone as it seems to work a bit better with the Dash lighting.

Hey Guys, finally managed to get in my car again thanks to Dave!!!! My whiper fluid had run out, so I've been driving around for a week having to open the window and spray my front with a bottle of water which is a struggle at 60mph :p My bonnet release cable had snapped right at the hatch. I've bought a new cable and I can see it's gonna be a hell of a task fitting a new one! Any advice/tips?
I also have a quick question: Does the Punto Mk2b come with an Undertray? Mine doesn't have one, but when I was under the car trying to open my bonnet I could see the connection points/screw holes for a possible attachment of an undertray. If tried to check ebay and some of the members suppliers on here but couldn't see an undertray for the Mk2b or Mk3 as some suppliers seem to call them. Any one know where to get one? or perhaps have some dimensions to make one? I have a Galvanised thin sheet of metal lying around I could use :)
