Panda (Classic) Red Classic Panda 4x4 restoration.

Introduction

There's a lot to tell on this introduction, you have been warned.

I had a phone call about three weeks ago from a Guy called Phin who had been given my number by a garage who looks after one of my friend's Panda 4x4. Are you with me so far?

Phin has two Pandas of his own so he arranged to come and see me in case I could be of any assistance to him in the future. Nice Guy, Panda nut, I'm sure we will do business in the future.

Anyway, about a week ago I get an email from Phin telling me that a friend of his is helping a lady clear her house in Oxford and she's had a Panda on the drive that's been there for the last five years. She now wants to get rid of it and I may be able to take it for free if I'm interested, he will send me pics asap.

Stick with it, there will be pictures soon :p.

I replied saying that I had no space and even free it's going to cost me £100 just to collect it. I have a couple of donor cars already so don't really need another anyway.

Then Phin's friend Jeff emails me some pictures, :( :) It's only a 4x4 with twin sunnies isn't it!

It was in a right state, as you'll see in a bit, but underneath all the crud I could see a half decent car. If I didn't rescue it a scrap man was waiting with £100 to take it away so I decided to give the lady a call and sort something out.

Ellan was the Lady and it had been her late husbands car. Any money it raised was going to her two Daughters. Quite rightly her priorities lay with her Daughters and not me so if I wanted to take the car I'd have to match the scrap man's offer. I happily agreed. Now I have to decide what to get rid of to make space for it. :(

Ok, here's some pics. Anyone with a weak disposition look away now.......

Doors are rusty, no surprise there, the rear side window on the o/s has been replaced by perspex after someone smashing the original many years ago. The sills look pretty good though, only at the back where they always go is there any sign of rust. The tyres were flat and perished but did hold air once pumped up. The brakes were stuck on, but after a little rocking freed off and have been fine ever since, even the handbrake! The battery is dead so I have no idea if it runs, but once it is running there will be a thousand spiders loosing thier homes.

It turned out that Ellan's Husband bought it from new and loved it until his sudden death in December 2006. He'd covered 120,000 miles in it including many trips abroad to the Pyrenees and Alps. It was also his every day transport around Oxford where he was an Oxford Don, teaching at the University since 1977. Surprising he should choose a Panda given that he originated from the USA.

Because it is a one owner 4x4 with twin sunnies, the owner (Peter Derow) is an interesting character in his own right and looked after this Panda well, I feel I owe it to him to restore it to as close to the condition he first bought it in as I can manage. I know that Ellan and her Daughters would love to see this happen too. Besides, I'm getting a little bored with leather interiors and alloy wheels. :p
Great news! There is something about this panda that I just love, I don't know if it's the history that comes with it, or just the fact it's a beautiful, beautiful panda. Probably both! So glad it's going to live on with a good new owner (y)

Regarding the new owner, I'm going to go along the line of "through the keyhole" and imagine you've planted clues as to their identity in your post :chin:

You say you added an extra support to the drivers seat aswell as replacing the broken one, are we to presume the new owner is a large character :D

I think you're thinking what I'm thinking Jamie!! It is red after all, and someone needed a 4x4 for the Italy trip..... :)

Well the brakes are still a little sticky but ok to have a drive around the yard. The short trip was very encouraging, drove well with no gearbox issues. :)

Some of the ball joint rubbers are split and all the suspension components are pretty rusty, but there is very little wear anywhere. I was expecting this one to have been well maintained, and it was, all the issues are down to poor storage really.

The outer sills are in great condition but there is some evidence of corrosion on the inners, not a massive amount but some at the ends as usual. I don't think the rust repairs will require removal of those lovely outers, I certainly hope not anyway, we will see.

We put the better doors on today as it seemed to be the safest place to keep them. They came from a 2wd of the same colour so I was hoping for a good colour match. The 2wd Panda didn't have side trims so I had to drill holes for the trim clips, It didn't have a door pocket on the passenger side either so I had to fit new inserts for the screws too.

Once I polished up the body a little either side of the doors I could see that the colour match is great, as is the condition of the new doors, if only it could be that cheap and easy every time.

I still need to add the black areas around the windows and will renew the black around the rear side windows too as it's a little tatty, but not a priority at this stage.

Nice work on the door trim, I have the same issue with a new door that came with the car i recently bought, can you help me locate the trim fixtures that you drilled holes for?

Also on the fuel tank you have a metal guide for the brake lines to pass through, have you ever seen these for sale anywhere? when i fitted my new tank mine was corroded to much to save... no surprise there!

Would this owner happen to have a dog? Rofl

I'll check to see if I have any left. (y)

Can't help with the brake pipe guide I'm afraid.

So after a very fraught weekend sourcing new suspension and AndyPanda4x4 coming up trumps and throwing my self on the mercy of one of Halifax's busiest garages a day before the start of the Italy trip, the car made it there and back.
It performed well apart from the manifold, choke cable and alternator belt becoming loose.
The only drama on the trip was the battery giving out with a very rotten eggs smell and a slight leak - it was a GM battery though. Things could easily have gone very wrong as panda1408 spotted a lack of gearbox oil and split gaiters and dripping speedo cable. The timing belt was also changed as a precautionary measure.
Despite doing 2k miles and a good day of off roading I never fell under the spell of the car or the 4x4 ability - I still prefer a peppier 2wd with no choke and servo brakes and proper rear suspension!
So the car has been passed on to Freddy who I believe has plans to do some Peak District off roading!

Over to you panda1408!

So does this mean LVJ will be moving on too?

LVJ Will be kept for off roading if nothing else when it reappears out of the shed it went into nearly a year ago now!

I'm quite tempted to get a cheap spring lift kit and a set of knobblies for the mk3 though!

Had to juggle the fleet (what bits I have of it anyway) today. I'm sure the neighbours are more than happy with my new garden panda's.
