Panda (Classic) My white '88' 4x4.

Introduction

Well Charmania has one, as does the blue clx and Barbara's 4x4, so I'm starting a thread for my white 4x4 in order to keep a record of the work in one place. :)

This was it when I first took ownership about 18 months ago. It had just come out of a five year period of storage and had no tax or mot, 54,000miles on the clock, but did look to be in pretty good condition.

After closer inspection at home I found it to be really really good :). only one area of rust thanks to it being thoroughly waxed from new. This was the usual area at the back of the sill, only the o/s though, the n/s was fine. This had to be repaired for the mot but I can't remember much being needed.........

I soon had it all polished up and fitted some alloys........

About a year ago while I was servicing it disaster struck :(. When I removed one of the spark plugs a tiny piece of metal fell into the cyl. without me knowing, so when I started the engine it made one hell of a racket. I had to remove the head to get it out and renewed the cambelt and tensioner at the same time.
Unfortunately the big end bearing in that cyl. had suffered. I drove it like this till last November and then decided i would change the engine for a 40,000 miler I had spare. This engine change was an excuse to completely refurb the engine bay. I moved workshops while doing this so a month became three, then the front suspension was done too, so three months became six etc. etc.

Anyway, it was all done by April this year.............

More recently the fun stuff has started. Alloy wheels were changed for 127 Palio alloys I painted black and white. I also tracked down a wheel arch trim kit from Italy. New 4x4 decals were fitted to the rear wings, and a radio/cassette with four speakers were fitted to the interior.......

This is how it currently stands but further upgrades are in the pipeline. A sump guard is in the making and a pair of Boulder bars (I think that's what they're called) will follow.........

The bar in the last pics was just a test piece and is too short, the final bars will run the full length of the sill. They're made of 35mm tubing, a nice small size just right for Pandas but because they have a diamond pattern pressed into them they are as strong as much larger tubing :)

I'm trying to make all non original parts removable so that it can easily be returned to standard, I know some some people prefer this.

It's also been to a few car shows recently and gets a lot of positive feedback from the general public, especially with the Panda tent on the back. In fact six weeks ago at the Beaulieu Italian car day it was voted joint runner up by the attending public, tying will a Lamborghini Gallardo. The Lambo only managed it because it was a special edition they only made 250 of and named it after one of their test drivers :p.

Phew, that's pretty much up to date now so will post any future work from here.
Picked up the finished clamps today, all twenty of them :(. This allowed me to work out final positioning and drill the holes in the plate......

The screws will come through the plate first then into the blocks, passing through the first half but screwing in to the second. The central hole is slightly oversize to allow room for some rubber to be wrapped around the frame.

The plate has now gone to be powder coated. :)

I should point out that the frame in the last post is a spare I'm using to take measurements, it's not the one I had powder coated recently, I hope it will last a little better than that. :p

Well the boulder bars/rock sliders (you choose) were finished this afternoon giving me enough time to make the mounting brackets and fit them properly :)

The front mount is made from part of an old original jack, the part that slides into the body. It's welded to the bar and just slides in to the jacking point. I drilled and tapped a hole into it that lines up with a hole that's already in the bottom of the jacking point tube, I can now screw a bolt in once it's in place to make sure it stays there...........

I thought I was going to have to make a front and rear mounting point too but because the jacking point is closer to the front of the sill a rear one was all that was needed to make it rock solid ( no pun intended :p ). A flat plate is welded to the tube and then an 'L' shaped bracket bolts to this and attaches to the front spring shackle bolt. I chose to do it this way because now I can undo two bolts to remove the bar if the jacking point is ever needed for it's proper purpose, just need to make sure I carry a couple of spanners with me.........

Once they were finished I had to take them off again as they are going for powder coating tomorrow when I hope to pick up the finished sump guards :)

They look great...but Vern your missing the point!

Rock sliders ARE jacking points! The idea is you can use the whole length of the slider....usually with a High lift Jack. This is why I had sliders made for my Toyota truck.

Now I'm not suggesting you carry one around ( although it would look cool ) but you could use the same idea as the original jacking point by welding a little square section under either end of the slider.

I thought the point of rock sliders was that you could slide over rocks with them.

I can jack the car up on them with a trolley jack but don't want to keep one in the boot so that's a good idea to weld square tube on the bottom of the bar as an alternative to carrying a couple of spanners. I've never used the jack under the bonnet with any of my Pandas so may trust to luck and leave the spanners in the toolbox.

There, that's jinxed it. :p

The sumpguard and rock sliders are on now.

I'm really pleased with the bars but I think the sump guard may have to grow on me. Gavin's sump guard is fine to my eyes, maybe because it's narrower at the front and has the bull bars to mask the sides. Maybe it's because it's a slightly more subdued silver instead of in your face WHITE!

I'm going to leave it a while and see if it grows on me, if it doesn't there's always black vinyl to reduce it down a bit.

Or maybe I need a bullbar  I'm not wild about the usual ones, they look too big for the car imo, very nice on yours though Gavin . I'm thinking that I might design my own using the same diamond patterned bar I used for the rock sliders. Hmmm, we'll see.

Spent Saturday afternoon getting ready for Sunday's simply 4x4 day at Beaulieu.

Apart from the usual valeting stuff I also fitted some spot lights (still to be wired up), and covered part of the sump guard with matt black vinyl to tone it down a little.

Here it is at the event, complete with the tent of course........

'Landrover Adventures' had organised a 45 min off road course through the woodland surrounding the Beaulieu estate, so for £40 you could drive one of their Discovery's around the course, or for £25 you could wreck your own car. I pushed any concerns for my shiney new sumpguard to one side and paid my £25 :slayer:

At 12.30pm I set off between two official Disco's, no one else had opted to take their own car on this trip, choosing to be passengers in the Disco's instead :p, and as we drove out to the course I thought to myself," well that Disco looks pretty low to the ground too, so if he can do it so can we" :). Then as we got onto the rough stuff both the Disco's gently lifted themselves another 6" off the ground (not the wheels of course :p). I quickly hunted round for the switch that raised my suspension.........oh ****.

Well we made it. There were some steep inclines and declines, deep sticky mud pits, ruts and sideways slopes, but the Panda just followed on as if it was just out for a Sunday stroll, brilliant! The sumpguard did get a clout on a few occasions but it sounded worse than it was, but I won't pretend it's still pristine.

Here's an after shot..........

You can clearly see mud on the wheels and, if you look close, on the sump guard. I have a video of part of the course but haven't worked out how to load it onto my laptop never mind post it here, but I will find a teenager to do it for me at some point.

In the mean time Beaulieu have a vid of the course on youtube......

Simply 4x4 Forest Drive Course 2012.

The day was rounded off nicely by winning second prise in the 'Visitors choice' competition, one place better than at the 'Simply Italian day'. :)

Well done Vernon. I didn't think it looked too bad from the video - wish I could have taken mine round but just couldn't make it down there in the end (n)

Loving the fact that all the expensive offroad stuff wouldn't go round, and you proved that a Panda's happy to do it (y)

They were doing runs every half hour, some of them went on the other trips but it was still a small percentage of what was there. To be honest what was there could be seen in any supermarket car park, I was hoping for at least one Hummer, or maybe a super raised Toyota Hiace (or Surf, Kev.) but no. There were a couple of nice VW Golf Country's, but that was it.

Gavin, I think you were lucky not to go on the course, given how much you've just spent on your shiney new sump guard. It would at least have been scratched back to bare alloy.

Nice one Vern...(y)...well done.

That's what the sump guard is for anyway..:)....should have bought the Toyota down if the whole lifted truck type of thing was not there. Plus ive been adding stuff to it lately...:D
