Punto (Mk2/2b) Fiat Punto Mk2b 3DRS 1.2 8V

Introduction

Hello Fiatforum,

Just new to this forum. But i like to show my car to you all. Purchased the car about 3 months ago here in Holland. That's why it's having those yellow plates ;)

It's all original now. My Punto has a 60HP 1.2 8V engine and runs on petrol. It has run just over 135000 KM (almost 84000 miles). As far as i know its the Active or Young variant.

Things i want to change:

- Fiat Punto Sporting rear (and maybe front) bumper. I really like the other sporting bumper with the black plastic inserts!
- Fiat Punto Sporting front grill
- Colored wing mirrors
- Replacing the blue Fiat logo's with red Abarth logo's, or maybe just an additional Abarth logo on the rear.
- Replacing the headrests with the original luxury ones (not the hard plastic ones).
- Adding original headrests at the backseats (don't know if this is possible)
- Fitting Mk2 / Mk2b factory subwoofer

Please let me hear what you think of my car!
Got to the Fiat garage and they fixed the light for 16 euro's. Surprised they fixed it in about 5 minutes

Well finaly got a sporting grille! Removing the old one, what a dirt under it..

Cleaned it up, and fitted the new grille:

Update:

Did change the spark plugs today. Last change was at +/- 80.000 KM, the car is now at 140.000 KM. So it was about time to change them.

Picture of the old plugs:

The plugs are DCPR7E-N-10, from NGK. Changed them with the same brand and type.

The car also had a bench test a few months ago. (Thanks to Autoweek, a Dutch car magazine). This was the result of this benchmark:

On the left side is the power output (in PK) (Vermogen in Dutch). At the bottom the rpm's are noted (in RPM) (Toeren in Dutch). On the right side the Torque is noted (in Nm) (Koppel in Dutch).

As you can see the car has a maximum power output of 56 BHP at 5000 RPM. Kind of interesting since the car should have 60 BHP.

So far this update..... :D

Rust problems. Car sounds like an Diesel now, time to figure out why...

There we have it. A hole just after the flexible part. The backbox also has some rust, so i'm going to change the whole exhaust.

Also spotted the following under the car:

Does anyone know how to fix this rust? Its on the edge of the front wheel arm.

Got a bit of inspiration from Ziggy's threat: https://www.fiatforum.com/members-motors/305902-meet-bumble-bee-7.html?p=3302967

Time to remove the rear bumper and fix some rust under the car.

That's some 7 years of dirt collected. After cleaning it all up:

Did only apply the chemical rust converter today, will finish the job later.

Fixed the rust on the rear side this week. Wire brushing the rust -> sanding it down -> chemical rust converter -> primer -> underbody seal.

Alot better. Also bought two cans of this stuff just to try out at the rear side:

Finally did clean the whole interior of the car, some Poorboy's World All Purpose Cleaner in a bucket and some in a sprayer. Used a microfiber cloth to clean it all up. Finally applied some Poorboy's Natural Look on the whole interior. The car looks and smells like new now (y)

This bucket of water was clean when i started cleaning the interior.....

Well i'm happy that is out of the car!

Fitted the new exhaust yesterday. Went to a DIY garage, about 10 euro's per hour to rent a bridge (is this the correct English word for it?) and tools.

Off with the old exhaust (it was completely rusted through at the flexible part):

Treated the rust under the car and applied a coat of Hammerite waxoyl underseal. Then fitted the new exhaust (including new backbox):

At last did a quick service: fresh oil, oil filter and air filter.

:)

To-do list:

Rear side:
- Removing the fuel tank, underseal the bodywork it's hiding.
- Underseal the filler neck rear wheel arc. This includes removing the whole filler neck assembly.
- Fixing the squeaking handbreak cables.
- Removing rust from rear brake drums and assembly

Front side:
- Complete engine clean, removing the old oil from the engine block (from the leaking camshaft cover - leak is fixed)
- Throttle body clean
- Coolant change, brake fluid renewal
- Fixing a few rusty spots on the front wheel arches
- Professional headlight restoration. (Did use a Turtle Wax kit myself - not really a success unfortunalty)

Priority is undersealing the rear of the car. Also the headlights need to be fixed before MOT (APK in Dutch). But that's in March next year.

So far the near faultless life of my Punto....... (n)

A few weeks ago, the engine started heavily shaking, orange motor light on the dash, P0352 fault code.

Did reset the fault code, did go well for over a week, but again P0352. Did change the ignition coils (new Magneti Marelli's), HT leads (Beru). Did work well for a day but next day again P0352. So concluded that the ECU's a toast...

Ordered a new ECU. Old ECU: IAW 5AF.P3 HW303, new one: IAW 5AF.P3 HW603. Seems to be an updated version with a new, faster processor with improved idle run and better protected against faulty ignition coils.

New one will arrive within a few weeks. I'll keep you posted.

How much did the new ECU cost? Do you know if older ecus get a firmware update?
