Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:
attachment.php

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:
attachment.php

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!
attachment.php

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(
attachment.php

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!
attachment.php

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
hehe i understand Vernon :) so i can take my pick then? well i would not mind another panda thats rough on top but not so bad underneath.
i'd actually like a crash damaged panda (or cinq 899) so long as the chassis and ruining gear is still good, for a... project. or one thats too far gone to make a good restore project out of it.
have welder, will have fun.

yeah yeah, Mr. cheeky cinqy... i wonder :p hehe looking forward to it actually. 5 days till rust free doors! soon as they are bolted on and i have new tyres the car could go in for its MOT.

you guys will spot me. i will have a black troll face shirt on with the word "Problem?" at the bottom. just hope its not raining! if it is, look for the orange ikea umbrella!

not been doing much on the car as of late. i want to do more but ive got to wait till the Thoresby Park meet till i can get some spare parts from other folk that will be attending.

oh i have fully installed the heater matrix, fan housing back into the car. my modded heater matrix shows no leaks which is good.

also now my fan no longer has 2 settings.. well it does.. now it has, low (1) and PWM controlled (2). that means i can now set the fan speed to anything. infinitively variable.
i always like to have the fan on really low. fan speed 1 for me was still jut that little too fast.
i was thinking of adding more windings to the resistor in the motor to make it just that little bit slower but meh. for the hell of it i just added a PWM controller.

best bit is, i didnt even cut any wires! i just used the fan plug under the spare wheel, and used spade connectors on it

another thing i have done is install my Toad AI606 alarm to the car. currently only the 2 doors, the ultrasonics and the tilt sensor are wired in. i have sneekely wired in the 2 stage immobiliser to a few things in the car. should make the thing a lot more hard to pinch! also had to have a bit of fun and temporary wire up the alarms remote start feature to the car, its not something i am keeping on it as its not really a safe thing on a manual car. i had my fun with it and disconnected it. though i do have plans for that feature. not to start the car but to do other things.

my brother is a little troll, he went online a bought one of those 12v 4 button remote switches and wired his horn and lights up to it. when ever some "well ard init blud" thugs came up to his bike he would press the buttons and they would all jump haha

im not going down the horn route (though you could have hours of fun with it). for my alarm i like the idea of one of the buttons turning the head lights on.. or for when i get the bull bars the spot lights i will have mounted to it.

i just need to add the bonnet pin switch, the one for the boot and maybe the microwave sensors. i do have the GSM "pager" module for it as well but i'm not sure how to get it hooked up to a network, and to make it send a text to my phone. ill figure it out!

got some wild idea that i could retro fit aircon in my panda.. the plumbing bit is easy. its the powering it bit that will be more hard. if i could find a chrysler grand voyager.. now i know that some of them had a 12v driven aircon unit in the boot. (we had one the same time we had the panda bianca) if i could find one of those at the scrap yard i'd be laughing! 12v compressors are rather hard to come by for a good price. failing that i could use an inverter and an old fridge compressor. i have a 3kw inverter i use to run some of my valve driven radio gear from. not ive just got to keep my eye on how many amps i draw from the alternator as its only a baby 45amp one. thats fine for the car standard but not very good if your a power crazy person like me (electronically speaking) we will have to see. most of the kit i will be using will come off other fiats like the punto. next time i am at the scrap yard i will have a good look at how it is fitted to the car and see how i could adapt it to the panda.
i know its gonna be a good job but i think it can be done!

well bit of bad news though, my local motor factors "midland car parts" have shut down :( that kinda sux really. they had a lot of custom from me. does explain why they never employed me there though if they knew they were closing. ill have to find somewhere else to get my bits and bobs from :/

i will try get a video up of what i have done.

i'm not crazy guys.. i'm insane. :):):D:D:eek:

swapped all the break fluid out today.
we all know the panda takes dot 3, but i have had to use dot 4.
i know dot 3 and dot 4 are mixable but i played it safe and just dumped the whole lot and replaced it with dot 4.

i have had to use dot 4 as now days it seems dot 3 is hard to come by. with all my local auto factors closed down the sunday market was the only place i could go to to get fluid from and the only stuff they had was dot 4.

oh well.
oh and the dash is back in now... for good!

Just read every single word of this thread... -- utterly inspirational! :)

I borrowed a 4x4 Panda, a very long time ago, off a friend, for a two-week holiday in the Lakes. Fell in love with the car; and have always wanted one... -- just never had the right combination of nerve or cash...! Maybe one day.... :(

Keep up the good work; and I look forward to seeing Talon on the road, one day...! (y)

ahh well today.
i played with the mixture screw and now have it so it does not smell like it is over fueling on idle. i have do idea if it is set right though.
found out that the filler pipe seal leaks where it joins the tank. to be fair i did not push it on all the way as i found it damn hard to do. wont take much to fix though. pull it off, clean it and push it on more.

also found out that Suzuki Swift's wheels (sorta) fit on my car. temporary they fit (just to move Talon) but the bolt patten is just slightly out. with wobbly headed bolts they would line up.
did look funny with 15 inch rims though. with 125/70 R15 tyres. (the space saver spare for my dads car)

still keeping the 4x4 steel wheels. still looks better on this car than any alloy i have seen yet. then again, i don't like alloys much anyway :/

Suzuki pcd is 100mm so only 2mm out, as you say John, wobbly headed bolts will sort it. I always thought that the centre hole for the hub nut would be too small on Suzuki wheels?

^^ i though this too, but they are the same size. like i said.. my car drove on them, just could not tighten the bolts up all the way as they were just a little offset.

well i have fixed my fuel leaking problem. it was what i suspected, i had not pushed the pipe on far enough.

looking at putting my "auxiliary battery in the boot" thing however it was made for the cinq, so i need to lengthen the cables a little. also need a box to build some of the stuff in.

oh and does anyone have those wide mud flaps that some pandas came with? new or used, not really fussed.
would you believe that their is a guy on ebay selling the one i need, but its the wrong side! typical. >>Link<<

anybody got the drivers side one? pweeseee :D:D:D

also going to look at fixing the other plastics on the car tomorrow too.

will be fun :)

It is time! little Talon is ready for the big MOT. the first one since 2007.

so yesterday, Mr. @slugworth1987 came bearing gifts of 4 good tyres on 4 solid rims (each rim a different colour but what the hell.)
he THEN went on to take me down to the local scrap yard where i (sadly) found a Cinquecento Soleil with severe rotted sills.
i quickly liberated its drivers side bolt on window wiper arm (Yes! Same size as a pandas!) and also its radio aerial coaxial cable and the speaker ISO connector.
when back home and after slugworths departure i promptly set to swapping all the wheels over, fixing on my other mud flap, finishing off the tow bar wiring, rejuvenating the door mirror plastics then fitting them to the doors, wiring the aerial and new coax cable in and eventually fixing on the other rear wheel arch plastic trim cover (the kit that Mr. @VmanC sells). i am however holding back on sticking the front trim bits on just yet, i still have some tarting up to do around the front wheel arches and wings.

i am quite happy as you can guess. however theres a few things that i am... concerned about.
one being the brakes (though they look good you just dont know until it is tested) and the other being the emissions level to high, only time will tell and lets face it, its just the turn of a screw to fix.

i wont be taking the car for its MOT until i can afford Insurance, the MOT its self and TAX. my funds are not looking too bad though.

here is a video guys:

not sure if i need a spare wheel or not for the MOT.. if not one of the cars original ones will do. Ill stick it under the bonnet just to fill the gap.

Id just like to say a big thanks to all the guys that have helped me acquire all the parts i need over this restoration project.

i still do require more bits and bobs though, so if you have these bits please get in contact with me:
· Plastic Battery tray
· Tailgate inner trim panel
· Sisley roof rack (or bits off one)? if anyone has any non rusty bars that make a 4x4 roof rack up, i'll have em!
· Plastics that go around the door to hold the carpet in place. not the sill cover ones, the ones near door hinges. (both sides)
· 2 speaker pods, with or without the speakers in them.
· Sisley drivers side front, wide mud flap (there is one on on ebay at the moment for the passenger side! can you believe it!)

OK not vital, but it would be nice to get everything for the little panda car.

heh this thread is by no means to an end, there is still much work to be done to the car. it is mere only at a road worthy spec, not yet to its near full glory. (as i will never get it perfect)
the aim was to get the car to a road worthy spec first, then when i could get my fat ass mobile, take all the rusted bolt on bits to a shock blaster/acid bath place and get them all sorted out.

and i must admit, this is a project that i would do again given i was not held back by funding issues... maybe a 2wd.. maybe an injected selecta.. for a change.
still must not dwell on that, i have yet to complete Talon.

Edit, Oh yes i forgot to add that i have been buying some spares too, a water pump, a spare electronic points ignition module thingy and.. well general service consumables.

well it is all down to money. now i am pretty careful with it, the whole project so far has cost around about over a grand. and that is with the cost of the car.
however

to become road going myself i need.. well heh just about over a grand. insurance at around the £900 mark, the MOT and then the tax. i have about £500 in my insurance fund anyhoo so i am getting there.

if you need and tips on painting body bits message me on fb :slayer:

Well done DM!
You have done amazingly well on a small budget.
You don't need a spare wheel for MOT. I was worried about that as well when I took Manda 16v for MOT (no room for a spare wheel under the bonnet anymore).
The tester told me it is not necessary, "yet advisable" (no s**t, sherlock:D)

If you are struggling with the roof rack, could you find some box section you could cut to the correct length to make the bars??

Hope you can get it MOT'd soon, it should fly through(y) I'm amazed how much your insurance quote is though, I've insured my CLX for £400 this year and I'm a few years younger than you:confused:
