Cinquecento John Dragon Mans 998 SX

Introduction

John Dragon Mans 899 SX

Hello to all,

This is my first road going car, i passed my test in April. at the time i already had a car, a vauxhall corsa 1.5TD (as i really wanted my first car to be a small diesel) however that wish was soon crushed when the insurers asked for a sizable £4000 to insure it. (google "John Dragon-Man's 1.5TD" for a thread on it)

so i sold that, and looked for another car, i was looking for a classic fiat panda as we had one when i was back in school.. i loved the car then, and i still love them now. however they seem to be getting rare, so i found the only local group 1 insurance car in any paper, website and magazine.

£400 for a bright PiNK Cinquecento SX with a nice sensible 899cc petrol engine.

Yes, Very pink. but i had a car. all that was needed was a smaller sum of £1645 to insure it. keep in mind that i am 23 years old and have had 4 years road experience with a moped and learning (being my mum and dads chofer) to drive.

when we got it the car had a few faults (some hidden) one was no brakes (realllllyyy spongy), the gearbox was running on 400ml of oil (gator failure) and .. well Italian wiring (most electronic things not working)

fixed it up with a new master cylinder, replaced the gator and filled with oil, and i set about it with a soldering iron. so now i have a fully working car.

------

a few months pass i discover Fiat Forum and i do some small things to the car, here is a few pictures:

a week or two after i got it.. (note seat colour)

side view, nothing to report here (all pictures below were taken on 9/9/2011)

The front. nothing good here really, ahh.. theres the LED scanning bar below the number plate. its not wired up yet mind.
the cars bright pink.. in for the penny in for the pound.
DSC005125.JPG

The back. despite the yellow window sticker, i left The Inbetweeners to find out that this car can do 100mph. 70mph is fast enough!

Little car, big twin aerials. what the hell.. its bright pink. besides the aerials do have a use.....

The Trim. i had to change the old seats because they were ripped. i wanted to find the same seats as i liked the colour of the old ones.
i found a sporting, set about it with a socket set and took most of the goodies from out of it. this is the result..

The clocks/dash. i waited quite some time for a sporting to come into the scrappers, just so i could pinch the rev counter out of it. i try to keep the revs below 5000 rpm as im not a speed demon or a fan of screaming engines. i try to drive as cheaply as possible!

the radio.. no not the music one, the one that i can talk all over the world on.
i don't have it in the car much as it is my home station radio. its a good place for the faceplate, and it does not interfere with the rear view mirror one bit!
DSC005116.JPG

the dash, i had fitted a radio, as the car didn't come with one :/
i like how the ash tray makes for a great place to clip the mic to :D
the lighting is controlled by the switches next to the window switches
DSC005095.JPG

The boot, nothing good in here... well ok. the battery.. thats to run my radio gear from. it also powers the sub, but thats not used much. its more of a thing to impress friends.
DSC005015.JPG

The power controller. i built this myself, this basically lets me choose how much power i want to go to the front or to the back of the car. makes starting the car very easy as it uses both batteries during starting of the car but only sends power to the back battery. the amp meter scale is a little out but i made my own switchable shunt and full scale is actually 500 amps instead of the normal 50 amps

This is a modded clock i fitted to it. the display is meant to be lit up by 2 standard dash bulbs, but a bit of cut out and glued in cardboard and 3 LEDs and we had 3 colour display!

well that is basically how the car stands today. well the large 9ft aerials have been taken off as the radio is not in the car and it will help my MPG.

Please do leave a comment, tell me what you think. thanks for looking.
yeah i actually did another video, but the phone crashed and i lost it telling people what we were doing.. were using medium density blocks for the sides and a nice big steel grid for the flooring.

as for getting out, theres just going to be a ladder at both ends.
its not going to be much of a pit, but it will be enough to get under a car and do whatever.

going to put a few power sockets in the wall and when its done the whole thing is going to be white washed to reflect all light.

starting work on the concrete base tomorrow!

all i need now is the car..... well the panda project ;)

heh thanks, yeah it is one hell of a hole. its taken a week of digging to get down to 6ft. i guess its kinda in the blood as my granddad was a pipe layer for Seven Trent water.

yeah, its gonna be great for when i get a panda 4x4.. i cant wait till i am under it welding. heh most people hate doing that kind of thing.. i LOVE it.. making panels cutting out welding in.. something to be proud of when you make a good job of it. and a fiat panda 4x4 is about the best car i can think of doing it on as its about my all time favorite car.

ohhh i cant wait >_<

yeah, i am not going to sell it. well not untill the panda will be on the road.
we have a totally open front and the whole front garden is paved but you can only get 3 cars on it.
now my mum has a car, my dad and i do. the panda can live round the back, in front of the garage. my brother is turning 16 this year and on his 17th my mum and dad will be pushing him to take driving lessons. if he passes and he gets a car (given i still have not finished the panda by then) we will need the space for 5 cars!

heh maybe i can give the chinq to my brother for a first car.. lets face it.. its being a super great first car for me.. cant fault it one bit. he might though.. what with the colour lol if i give it him its gonna help him out with the total cost of motoring, i mean the car as it is now is worth about £400-£600 (now its all working as it should!)

but.. this is not for a few years yet.. and i have a whole stuff that could happen from now to then.

Only time will tell lol.

Hi. I see you say you wanted to keep the origional seats in light blue. I have a Pink SX also but would like to change to the grey seats. My seats + door panels are in very good condition as the car has only done 43,000 miles, if your grey seats + door panels are in good condition would you be interested in a swap? My Dad would be prepared to bring them up to Derby (as long as it's not too far) as we are in Sutton Coldfield W.Mid's & help swap them over if your interested of course.
I can send you some pictures if you would like but I havent worked out how to use this site yet as i've only just joined.
Thanks Shelby.:)

hey there, welcome to fiatforum.

heh i think i am actually going to keep the sporting seats.. they are actually quite comfy compared to the standard ones. if you were to stick em on ebay i bet you would get something for them. i got a whole sporting set for £70 from looms scrap yard, including the red seatbelts!

get up some pictures of your car in the Gallery ;)

Hi & thanks for the welcome. Looks a good site. Not suprised you want to keep the Sporting seats as they look a lot smarter! Dad has been keeping an eye out on ebay for a set so with any luck should track some down soon.£70 seems a good price. Have been getting a few ideas off the site for a few mods but will have to pay for the insurance first ! Then pass my test!!
Shelby.

heh well then, i recommend you dont focus on mods just yet..
save every penny for the test and your insurance. its quite a costly thing, but its well worth it.

the "mods" for what they are, that i have done to my car didnt cost me anything as it was all stuff i had lying around my room. as it goes the only thing i have spent money on with my car was parts and the new seats. the old seats were really far gone, shredded and all the foam was breaking off and going everywhere. like i said i would of had the normal seats but the only car that was in the scrap yard at the time was a sporting, and when i got it they even threw in the parts from the sporting clocks to add the rev counter for free

if your willing to travel keep a look out here for a sporting:
http://www.albertlooms.com

look in the stock list under fiat. theres a non-sporting one in at the moment and i want to go down and see if the headlights are any good as they only want £40 for the pair.

as soon as i get the headlights fixed i know my car will be fine for MOT. unlike when i got it >_<

quick update on the pit too guys, the base has set and we are ready to start laying the blocks down! yey!!!

however theres some bad news. my dads really hurt his foot so i dont know when it will happen. i'm not really in any rush. its going to be a while before i get a panda 4x4 it seems :(

Hi John. (Shelbys dad here) Thanks for the link, I'll keep an eye on stock.
The mod's will be slow & cheap but the stereo has to go as it's the origional tape player! & the seats are mint but just the wrong colour so I'll buy her them. She isn't 17 untill March so have a month or so to play with the Cinq. Like a lot of what you've done with yours especially the clock mod.
Chears Dave.
